Hello

Spoke to Stuarts this morning and they confirmed I should have had the errata sheet in with my kit and the con rod crnters ate correct at 6 and 5/32.

Also the piston rod lenght at 3 and 1/32 from x head center to back of piston.

The one good thing to come out of it was he iffered to replace the con rod material and also waived the p&p.

Thanks to all for your input. My next post hopefully will be a working engine.

Regards Arthur

Hi all

WOW what a response. I dont know who to answer first.

Apologies for late reply had a family crisis today which diverted me.

Jason. I bought the kit and drawings together. Not from Stuarts but of a colleague who had purchased them years before from Stuarts and everything was sealed up in the original box. Re the main bearing I set it equal equal on the pad to accommodate the 1.5 inch centres, Have got the book for building but was very aware of dimesion mismatch and always adhered to main drawing which coincidently doesnt have a number. just a statement that says it supercedes al pre 1993 drawings

Tug have took on board all your observations and will work thro them tomo.

Phoning stuarts tomo so will give you an update then.

Thanks to all

Hi all

I have just got to the stage of doing a trial assembly of the engine (photos to follow) and have come across a big problem.

On the out stroke the slide bearings hit the back posts and on the instroke the bearings are 7/16 off the front posts and the piston is the same distance short of its "full" return position.

Its almost like the con rod is 3/8 short between centers.

I have double checked my dimensions and they are spot on

My question is would the engine stroke under pressure with the piston not getting back to the end of the cylinder.

Thanks in advance

Hi all

I have a Denford Viceroy with metric leadscrews and graduations of 0.025.

I work with metric drawings but my stumbling block is knowing quickly how much cut is needed to get to size without reaching for the calculator.

For instance, say there is 0.73mm to come off halve it 0.365 (thats the easy bit) how do you know quickly how many 0.025's there are in it.

Hi

The book which came with my kit advocate sweating the mating faces together before machining.

The method outlined seemed a bit hit and miss. I was thinking a better way would be after cleaning and fluxing, to grip lightly in the vice (to keep parts aligned) and solder like that.

My Q. is. Would I get a capillary action of solder with both faces held together.

Thanks in advance

Thread: Newmill
31/10/2020 18:41:03

Hi

My next project is to be the Stuart Victoria from grey castings.

My current mill a Clarkes CMD10 is nowhere near adequate for this so I am thinking an upgrade is the order of the day.

My budget will run to 700 for the mill and the sieg family look to be good value for money.

Any suggestions tips etc will be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi all

Thanks for all your lovely comments.

Have already ordered the kit for my next project.

It will be the Stuart victoria from grey castings.

I know that you guys will help out if I get stuck.

I need to upgrade my miller which is the clarkes cmd 10.

Much too small for the 13 inch bed on the victoria.

Im thinking of a Sieg. Any advice appreciated.

Hi I am pleased to say I've finally finished my engine. The Trunch Trojan designed and drawn by Bob Middleton to whom I am very much indebted.

Bob said he had set some challenges inhis design and I can sa that he was not understating.

It took me 12 month + but very rewarding and for myfirst project I am relly pleased with it. It still needs a plinth and painting but that will be a doddle compared.

I have attached a few pics for your perusal.

Thread: Gland packing
27/09/2020 19:22:03

Hi all

I am ready now to assemble the piston into the cylinder.

Could you advise on the best way to go about it.

The gland packing i have bought is about 4mm square and my slot is just wide enough for one width and deep enough for one revolutuon.

Is there any way to "stick" it in place.

Cheers Arthur

Hi Guys

Just pondering on the best way to do the eccentric strap.

Do i bore to size then split and use shims or should i split first and then clamp together with the bolts before boring.

Thanks in advance

Arthur
