Thread: Rotary Table Problem
11/12/2020 22:02:06

Fixing the Morse taper will get your fit, but as already mentioned, the reamer will follow the hole. If the parallel hole appeals to you, then boring at least part of the depth of the hole would be the answer, but check the wall thickness first. The bored hole will have to be in line with the od of the axel that the top runs on. If you hold the axel in a three jawed chuck, it will only run as well as the chuck jaws.

If it were mine, I would put the shorter test bar in a four jaw chuck and get it running true with the MT2 end sticking out. Then I would remove the top of the rotary table and fit it on the end of the MT2 bar. A Morse taper extending socket often has a parallel large end and would also chuck up nicely, just zero the runout on the male taper. The bearing inside the RT top could be carefully turned true to the internal MT. Then a bush could be made to run the halves of the table.

The Soba 6" RT that I bought privately had a large ammount of radial play, and I chuckad the needle roller bearing in the bin and turned up an aluminium bush with 0.0005" clearance and greased it and it has been ok for years now.

Thread: ER collet size help

I believe they are for woodworking routers, the industrial type.

11/12/2020 19:25:36

I think they could be EOC16 collets, the size looks right. **LINK**

Din 6388 is the classification, as DC31k says.

They are definitely not er collets.

There's no problem if the 2 metre spacing rules are observed.laugh

Welcome, Peter, thisis a good forum to be a member of, I have learned a lot from members since I joined. I also use The home Shop Machinist forum in the states.

Thread: ER collet size help

If you have some er32 collets, you could compare them against the mystery ones, all er collets look similar and their angles match.

11/12/2020 15:32:40

I happen to have some new er25 collets. They are 34mm long and at that length, the diameter is 19mm. This is the free diameter, and if you set calipers to 19mm and the diameter of yours is about that at 34mm from the front end, they might fit an er25 holder.

I tried googling Sandvik 393 collets and the result was very different from an er shape.

Thread: Drawing Projections

The drawings we used for Airbus, Westland, BAE usually had the projection symbols on them, but I cannot remember whether they were first or third angle.

Thread: Threads on milling cutters

For tight tolerances, it is useful to know that a slot drill, or endmill will not produce a perfectly square counterbore. This is because the end cutting edges are not square to the tools axis. The counterbore will be slightly deeper at the outer diameter than the inner. This probably does not matter if a screw is to be fitted in the counterbore.

I will be doing some ACME internal threading when the museum re opens, I have to make the tooling, but have the easier task because the thread I want is 1" X 5 ACME LH and the bigger it is the easier it is.

Whatever machinery you have, it is always best to make the most of what it is able to produce. A good machinist can get better results than I could with any machine.

Thread: The demise of Australian Model Engineering Magazine

A great shame for any publication to cease production, I had never heard of the Australian AME. I was a reader of Micromart, right up till it suddenly went to the wall, sad.

BS1104, it would have been sensible of them to advertise the thread as ACME.

I'm hoping that annealing will reduce "spring back", further helping me to get a close fit. I have considered using a heat conducting compound if need be. Any comments on using such a material appreciated.

Just in case you're wondering. I'm experimenting with a water cooling coil around the "cool" end of a Stirling Engine transfer cylinder.

COOL,not Hot end, he said.

The thread could be any one of a number of threads measured in inches. Whitworth, Unified, are a couple, but the op wants ACME.

Tracey Tools sell ACME taps in 1/2" X10 in both left hand and right hand.

They do , for £10 less than a bronze round nut from HPC

I would go for the HPC nut, but would check with them first just what they mean by "imperial thread"
