Is this the privatisation of the NHS creeping in ?

Does it matter as long as you get the service you require, when you require it, at the same cost to you ?

Is this the privatisation of the NHS creeping in ?

.

H

. They like the money, but not the patients because the latter cost money. So now, when you ring for an appointment you might get one in 3-4 weeks, or you get told to go to A and E, or a pharmacist, or if you’re lucky you might get a video call with a GP at a private on-line consultancy. So yes, it is creeping privatisation. And of no use to the patient.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would imagine they get paid per patient visit, so the more they see the more they get paid.

This happens with my eyecare, I have Ocular hypertension, extremely high in fact but no actual damage to my eyes. I was going yearly to the hospital for checks but as I hadn't developed Glaucoma I was deemed lesser priority and was sent to a local clinic for the pressure test and eye scan.

Afterwards they said see you in six months and then 5 months later rang up chasing me to make an appointment so I was seen again shortly after. Expecting the next appointment to be made early next year they began calling again after 5 months. I ended up with me being seen 3 times in one year. Once in hospital and twice at the clinic.

They announced just yesterday that a new vaccine by Moderna has been approved for adults booster. It protects against the original Covid and the Omicron variant, I doubt it'll be ready to distribute yet so don't rush to book now or you will get the old vaccine

Thread: Donations to keep forum free

Also interesting that the other two titles that Mortons took over don't seem to be asking for donations, one uses this forum software, the other uses the new one so can't be to cover cost of keeping the old software going.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why is this software so antiquated though, you can't do a simple cut & paste and if you try it it tells you to use keyboard shortcuts to do it. Also that you can't simply add a photo unless you upload it to an album first.

I have 10 different forum shortcuts on my taskbar and non are like this one with it's added complications.

Perhaps it is the case, especially in the south, of not too little water but rather too many people.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly this, the population continually increases one way or another so there is a housing shortage. We we build more and more houses, concreting over virgin greenfield sites which alters the natural balance of rainwater collection and destroys old floodplains forcing water into one channel.

In winter the rivers rise and cause flooding in areas not previously known to be susceptible. Flood barriers are eventually provided and erected and the river surges past and the town is saved. Meanwhile further downstream on the same river it bursts it's banks and it floods somewhere else for the first time in recorded history and everyone shouts "it's global warming" and flood barriers are provided ,,,,,,etc. etc.

I think it's called pass the bucket

Thread: noisy new electric motor
14/08/2022 09:23:25

I'm fairly sure the motor was not used before me but can't be certain as there are no marks to indicate otherwise. No evidence in the connection box that it's been wired up etc. I'll see what they say tomorrow re a refund or risk a replacement motor

13/08/2022 15:14:51

There is no damage on the cardboard box and the motor was sat in styrene blocks, must have been dropped before it was packed. The box is just a standard box, not one with Clarke or it's contents mentioned so probably packed by PowerTools direct themselves

The motor is going full speed, 1420 rpm. it clashes with the video frame speed  as does old western films when the wheels appear to go backwards.

It was apparently made in Italy according to their website

I have also noticed the foot of this motor does not stand flat as in the photo.

I made a video of it running Youtube of motor noisy or what!  ( enable sound in top corner of video)

it's started clonking and generally seems to have lost some power

Was it something that new bearings would not have sorted?

--------------------------------------------------------------

The bearings are bronze sleeve oil bearings, there is no play other than end to end, when it runs the pulley moves out quite a bit and then goes back when it turns off.

But it's lacking in power now, as far as I know if a capacitor fails then the motor won't run so why would it lose power I wonder.

12/08/2022 17:07:21

I have an 1/2HP Brooke Crompton motor on one of my lathes, it's started clonking and generally seems to have lost some power as it has to also turn a Victorian overhead countershaft

I thought I'd try a 3/4HP motor and sent for a Clarke one from PowerTools direct which I wired up today and it makes a horrible distracting racket. either set on the bench or under load.

It's dual capacitor and quite a lot smaller than the old heavy Crompton even though it's a bigger HP and as space at the back of the lathe is limited I was pleased when I first opened the box.

I have four lathes and non of the motors make a noise anything like this, they just hum.

O'k, it's a cheap motor but has anyone else got a Clarke motor and is it particularly noisy?

Thread: Perhaps not the wildlife photograph of the year......

Trouble is they usually end up getting worms from eating their catch, we had a neighbour once whose cat was either vomiting hair worms or had tape worms on it's backside or sometimes both. It was a friendly cat that spent time around us. They never bothered to treat the cat so we got some tablets and sorted the poor thing out ourselves.

There are other providers that offer much cheaper options than directly with BT even though they use the same BT phone line to deliver it to you. Plusnet, Vodaphone etc all offer phone/broadband deals for £25 or less a month

Measure the thread on the end of the collet

Previous discussion on the collets less than two months ago:

https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=180490

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was indeed but that was for the standard 15mm collets that do fit my lathe and trying to be certain as to the thread as pointed out because of slight variations in threads. I did get a new die and found it cleaned the threads of the Boleys but only some of the Crawfords.

However the question here is completely different, it is about the collet closer dimensions and what lathe it belongs to so I can probably offer it for sale as it's useless to me

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, Smart & Brown sounds most likely so far. There are no markings on the collet closer which might have been of help

06/08/2022 15:37:47

I have a collet closer and step collets that came with an old lathe but do not belong to it.

The thread is 8tpi and the locating shoulder for the spindle is 1/3/4"

The Crawford step collets have 15mm shanks, 13mm thread

Can anyone suggest the lathe this might fit please?closer.jpg

Yes, I agree that there are a lot of people who are selfish enough to ride unlawfully on pavements. And yes, how surprising it is that some people actually break the law. But the statistics show that cyclists are 14 times more likely to be killed on the road than car occupants, so it's perhaps understandable.

It's not like any motorist - ever - exceeded the speed limit and got away with it, is it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your last line devalues your reply. Drivers caught speeding are fined, cyclists riding recklessly are not because currently there is no way to track the rider.

You say the reason they cycle on the pathways is because it's safer which is probably true, but should they then ride at speed as though they are on the roadway and risk injury to kids and dogs who might suddenly move to one side?

23/07/2022 09:49:11

I'd like to ban cyclists riding on pavements and pedestrianised areas, what! it's already illegal? well how come they are getting away with it then.??

I'm not talking about children here, adults, some with all the gear on are the worst offenders. In one hour I counted nine cyclists riding through our local pedestrianised high street, four of them stupidly fast and weaving in and out of the shoppers, a small sign at one end says cyclists dismount. It's worse for me because I'm considerably deaf and can't hear them approaching from behind.

Even on shared pathways they think it's perfectly o.k to go as fast as they can and come up behind you with no warning. How many of them even have a bell? if you suddenly stepped aside they would smash your legs to pieces because they can't stop.

The recent highway code updates are for pedestrian priority, drivers have to give priority to cyclists or face fines because they have number plates and can be traced, seemingly cyclists can get away with anything they please and ride off if involved in any accident.

I would ban people from saying "do you know what I mean" at the end of every sentence or when they stop for a breath because it's very annoying and I am fed up of always answering them with 'yes I do know what you mean" I would also ban people from saying "like" all the time. Eg. I want to go to like America.

Likewise ban people who miss out the letter T in words such as computer which becomes compu-a and then there is mo-a car etc

Then you have the seemingly mass of people who raise the end of every sentence as though asking a question, it's called a rising inflection and annoys the hell out of me as it's like a silent way of saying 'do you know what I mean?

I'd ban so called music in shops so I can walk around in peace without forced caterwauling in my ears everywhere. When they first started piped music years ago it was always instrumental, never singing like now.

I'd ban people who can't park a car unless it's right next to another one even in an empty car park. You park your spanking new car over the far side of Tesco's carpark and when you come out some cretin has parked right next to it and dinged your door. We see it all the time at supermarkets, a whole empty row next to one full of parked cars with just one empty space. Someone with then squeeze in and find they can hardly open the door to get out. surprise
