Finding a good website builder for people with no coding skills is a minefield. Many have limitations, some such as Webeasy can't scale pages to fit phones and ipads so end up not getting indexed, Undoubtedly the best free uncomplicated website builder is provided by Google. See mine here: My Google website you can connect your own domain to it but I haven't bothered to do that as it's just a hobby website. I'm retired now but I have 2 domains and keep my old websites hosted with Tshost.com for 14 years, always reliable and a rapid response if you have a problem. My .co.uk website hosting has remained at £14.99 a year since 2008 although newcomers won't get that price now as the cheapest is 100GB space @ £3.99 a month with free domain name Tshost

Thread: Help with square thread |
13/07/2022 14:53:51 |
I have a lathe that uses a set of worms and wheels that fit into each other perfectly. I think the gear wheel and worm in the first photo doesn't appear to be made to fit into each other properly, they would jam. I wonder if one or the other are an incorrect replacement from some time in the past |

Just for clarity here is the square threaded lead screw of my 1937 Holbrook B8 which has square threads on the feed screws as well |

You appear to have put a photo link to your own PC which we cannot see, see the top of the page ALBUMS click on it and click create an album, give it a title and then upload your photo's to it, Then you can add it to this page by click the camera sign which says ( insert image from album) above your message |
Thread: Distance of air compressor to workshop? |
09/07/2022 10:12:57 |
John Doe 2 I used to work at home as a modelmaker and used air staple guns all day long so also did not want to annoy the neighbours. I had a smallish compressor on wheels and I fitted out a wooden box in the corner of my workshop and lined it with thick loft insulation. The on/ off button was on the top so I fitted a short piece of wooden rod through the top of the box so I could switch it on & off each day. It worked perfectly. With the front cover screwed on it was almost silent, just a faint rumbling noise when it topped up. I used that for 22 years, occasionally opening up the box and draining the water out from under the tank and still to this day it will work if I need it. |

I guess people are buying win 7 as it's cheaper than win 10 keys and you can upgrade straight away to win 10 |

I only have a Win 7 pro disk but the key also works for installing windows 10 (which is on my machine) and also 11 if my PC met the required spec. I've installed win 10 several times over the years when I changed the hard drive. |
Thread: Boley 15mm collets |
25/06/2022 15:25:42 |
The lathe in question is German, a Pittler C3, the Crawfords are imperial sizes but the Boleys are metric. I also got included five of these large Crawford step collets but no closer to fit my lathe mandrel. The closer I got with it was pointed out by the seller as not correct for the lathe but was probably for a Hardinge lathe |

Surely you can measure the diameter of the thread on your collets and confirm it's 13mm? ----------------------- I can indeed but it's more to do with a slight variation in the cut of the thread, as I already mentioned above I have 2 types, Crawford & Boley, both 15mm shank and 13mm thread but the threads are not quite the same and don't all fit the drawbar, hence my problem in buying a modern tap & die for collets that are possibly as old as the lathe (1895) Likewise I have a 1939 dated South Bend lathe that accepts Boxford parts, I sent for a Boxford faceplate that has the correct size bore and 8tpi thread only to find it won't screw fully on because in 1940 they made a slight alteration to the angle of the thread even though the dimensions are listed as the same.

Is this any help, vic ? https://www.furniturenmarkt.de/Spannzangen-BOLEY … aside from making you feel fortunate. ----------------------------------------------- Thanks for all replies MichaelG. I think that is definitely of help as it gives it as a 13 X 1mm thread. I also got included a smaller number of 15mm Crawford collets and although the thread is still 1mm they don't screw in properly in the drawbar without jamming after 2 turns so there must be a slight variation to the cut of the threads Buying a tap and die is a bit risky as it's unlikely to fit both but it's the Boley ones I'm more interested in.

Is anyone familiar with these ? my vintage lathe came with quite a few 15mm shank collets stamped Boley. I need to clean the threads and possibly make a new drawbar so looking for a tap & die to suit the thread. I need to be absolutely sure of the thread size and pitch which appears to be 1mm before I look to purchase. Can anyone advise? |

Thread: Advice on Belt Tensioners |
30/05/2022 22:28:20 |
I've used a cable tensioner to good effect, I modified it to push against the back of the lathe and on to the motor countershaft and it can be tightened or loosened in a second to move the belt over |
Thread: Old lathe identification |
30/05/2022 09:13:47 |
Unusual to see a flat belt pulley on such a small lathe, V belts first appeared around1917 but much earlier pulleys for round leather belts are often thought to be for V belts as they fit very well. Here someone has tried a V belt upside down? so the flat side is on the pulley but not sure how well that would work if at all |
Thread: south bend lathe |

Looks the same as mine, South Bend 9", This is the worlds most copied lathe and at least 20 other manufacturers used it's blueprints under the WW2 lease lend agreement. This means that parts from Boxford lathes with fit the lathe, I got more change wheels, a new spindle in the apron as the carriage wheel spindle had worn, all fitted perfectly. Mine is model C yours looks like model B which has power cross feed by the look of the knob on the apron, model A has a gear box with levers

Thread: Setting up my workshop |
21/03/2022 12:00:33 |
Glad to see you finally got it ready to use! Are you planning to make anything in particular or just potter about like me? I'm rearranging my machines to make way for another lathe, I've dismantled a bench that was covered in junk and moved my Pittler lathe into the space so leaving a bigger space for the another larger vintage lathe. |
