Thread: Through spindle stick out...
06/10/2022 22:42:58

Ok, thanks for that guys. Martin has solved it though. I didn't think about the hole in the wall option, and I bloody should have as I've seen it done!

I wouldn't dream of having any sort of excessive stick out on either side without the use of a steady, and in this case I'll just bolt one to the wall if needs be. In all other regards it means I can move the lathe even further into that corner and give myself a half decent size 'dirty bench' at the other end...

This place is by far the most valuable tool in the kit!

All the best, Jay

Hi folks.

How much, how often, and for what sort of jobs, do you find yourself having a lot of stick out at the rear of the headstock?

I'm mostly going to be doing stationary and model traction engines.

Due to an annoying drain pipe, I have a situation where I need to limit myself to about 18" rear stickout, or move the lathe down in front of said pipe and potentially have a spot with a limited cross-slide travel. I haven't measured exactly how much of an issue this limit could be yet, as I just happened to notice it as a possibility while I was doing something else. But Sod's Law would suggest it'll be exactly where it's most constantly inconvenient...

Cheers, Jay

Had the sparky round this morning, quoted £600 for wiring up the workshop. Glad he remembered to ask about lighting, because I plum forgot. Decided we're going to run the lathe and the mill on the same circuit as they won't be run together. Then going to have 4 two-gang sockets dotted around, should be plenty in such a small space.

Spent the rest of the day rebuilding the Logan. Got the gearbox greased up and fitted, and the cross-slide and apron all travelling lovely and smooth. Unfortunately my health issues mean I can only do drips n drabs and take lots of little breaks. The days I could've done all this in one sitting are sorely missed! Nemmind eh...

Good day all in all!

Off to a good start, what CAD package was it?

Should have mentioned that, it's F360... Maybe I'm missing something in settings?

I did notice the missing internal fillets when I posted it here.

Thanks for the support.

I almost didn't post this, having seen some others CAD offerings, but I'll tell you what I'm pleased as punch with this! Its taken me a couple of days, on software I've only done a few basic YouTube tutorials on. Took me about half a day to do all the other components, but this one was the real learning curve! Still some work left to do as I'm not sure it looks right at all with the fillets. Definitely a good choice of engine to start with I think.

Back to YouTube to learn how assemblies work now!

I've spent the last few days relearning CAD in F360. Very pleased with the software so far. I've begun modelling my 2A engine kit as a nice little starter project. It's nice because not everything is dimensioned on the drawings, so getting practice taking measurements and freehand modelling the castings.

Also been able to get back to rebuilding my lathe, after an injury put me out of action. Finished getting the gearbox back together and greased up. All being well, I'll be making chips by the end of the week.

Almost ready for the mill to arrive. One more tip run, then it's just the sparks to install and I'm all set. Exciting month ahead!

I'm in the process of a deal on a Chester 626 mill from Steven Mooney Machinery, based in Burgess Hill.

I've been really happy with my dealings with him so far. Very impressive stock and prices, and a VERY fair price on delivery, which I've found can be crippling from some other suppliers.

Really looking forward to delivery day!

Fortunately I did think to account for headspace.

In all other dimensions it's literally as big a machine as I can fit in the space and still move, so onto a good one I hope...

28/09/2022 15:11:00

Really Vic? I thought the throat on these was about as good as it gets for hobby machines?

28/09/2022 12:12:29

Thanks Bizi, fortunately it's a straight shoot from the drive into the garage. I'm buying it from Steven Mooney Machinery and he's kindly said his delivery guys will help get it in situ, so that's a load off, excuse the pun...T here is however a poxy drainage grate in front of the garage, but I've got a nice sheet of junk steel plate that I'm hoping will cut into a couple of 'bridges' to get the skate over safely. I don't have an engine hoist here, I'll speak to SM again and see if it would be useful too them to have one here on the day.

Thanks for the input Dave. Fortunately the level isn't too crucial for the mill as it is for the lathe, though I will check the surface to make sure it's not taking the P...

At some point I may attempt an overhead gantry crane, but that's not going to be possible just yet unfortunately.

Hi folks.

I have a Chester 626 mill coming next month. Wondering if there are any infrastructure or other preparations or modifications people wish they'd made before a big lump of machine got in the way?

Cheers.

Thread: MEW320 - Modifying My Mini Lathe Pt2
24/09/2022 18:02:05

Must thank Geoff Andrews for the inspiration of this mod.

Probably the only thing I don't love about my darling Logan is the 'ancient tech' top slide, and I've been foraging endlessly for how best to bring it into 21c functionality. By Jove, I think you've done exactly what I was looking for!

I must say, I'm particularly impressed with the tapered swivel that looks like it will claw up every ounce of rigidity, while providing an incredibly flexible platform functionally.

Hats off to you Sir!!!

Any chance of some more photos and drawings of both builds pretty please?

Personally I'll be all over it once I'm properly up and running. Though I doubt I'd be up for posting pics of my meagre workshop. Though I should hope eventually to have something to contribute regarding modularity for teeny weeny workshops.

Really enjoying MEW320... I've got to say, the Editors Bench hit me in the feels a bit. You absolutely can't please everybody all the time with every article, how could you possibly with such wide ranging skill sets and applications? The fact that anyone would have the temerity to have a whinge is a bit...off let's say, though I'd like to use something stronger and smellier!

As far as my opinion on the question of focus... All the things, as per usual! Although I would appreciate some more tool reviews. Particularly on the mods a lot of us have to do to make the best of an affordable price point. While I can appreciate the reticence to lose potential advertising revenue by delivering a bad review, I do think it's also important to let folk know when there comes a point that something is too cheaply made, to the point of being irredeemably so!

That's my tuppence anyway...

Thread: Must have material stock?
19/09/2022 14:46:19

So a bit of a 'storm in a teacup' situation then... Well that's something of a relief.

I'm nowhere near ready to start buying anything in significant enough lengths as to make a difference to price, so I'll just stick a pin in that idea for now and wait n see what I find I'm using a lot of...

Cheers all.
