Thread: Engineering Shows |

I don't really negotiate much or at all tbh... I could've probably gone back and got a few quid off the second hand one, but no chance of getting it near the value gained from the new one... |
13/10/2022 21:18:19 |
One problem I'm a tad bitter about is the second hand sellers wanting new money for everything. Spoke to one about a QCTP to be told he wanted as much £ for the post with two holders as I got the brand new one with two standard, one v groove and a parting blade holder with a blade. No contest! And don't get me started on book sellers... I think this is the first time I've walked away from a show without any! Hard times all round I know, but if you're paying so much for your second hand stock as to need to charge that much then you have to accept the business simply isn't viable. You'd be better running a bring and buy type sales model and charging a commission on sales. Jay |

Was a bit more than I intended to spend at the show, but I couldn't say know to the deal on a T63 QCTP from RDG. That's going to be a huge quality of life improvement! Didn't see Arc or Chronos there... Very pleasant day all round! Jay |

Thread: Cursed train at Reading |
13/10/2022 12:46:00 |
It really is difficult to understand, for anyone who hasn't travelled in my company, quite the extent and frequency to which things go wrong when I try to go anywhere. |

It so, I can only apologise. This is the story of my life!
Why, what did you do to kill the train? Merely existing in its presence is enough for most things... |

Hey folks... Anyone else on way to MMEE on the dead train at Reading? It so, I can only apologise. This is the story of my life! Jay |
Thread: Headstock alignment |
11/10/2022 13:32:37 |
Thanks for the input folks. I'll make a proper test bar once I know I'm in the ball park, which is all the RDG bar is for. I've done a full rebuild so thought it was as good a way as any to line everything up initially. It was the initial reading that gave me a bit of a panic. Brain just went straight to catastrophic consequence before thinking to check the validity of the measurement... Such is the learning curve. So nice to have patient and knowledgeable folks here for a sanity check! Jay Edited By UncouthJ on 11/10/2022 13:33:37 |

It's ok, I'm a prat! Read the LPR article... Thought "yep yep yep..." Read it again and realised my error! I'd just inserted the bar by hand. Took it out gave it and the socket a wipe and gave it a clump home with the wooden mallet. Now I've got 0.03 runout registering along the whole bar. Which although still needs dialing in, isn't near as dire as it appeared earlier. Leaving the post up for others to learn from my shame! Jay |

It's a 1941 Logan 10" (Montgomery Wards 700). Yes rotational eccentricity is what I mean (At least I think that's what I mean...) I have a test bar in the spindle and getting and additional 0.05mm rotational deviation for every inch I move the DTI away from the head stock... Jay |

Hey folks... Anyone got any best practice methods for lathe headstock alignment please? I've got 50um per inch runout from the spindle. Measured with a 3MT test bar from RDG... Cheers, Jay |

What the heck was a test like that even supposed to reveal not already known by local knowledge, anyway? I think you are being a little unfair here. I suspect the Planning Officers are clever - but they are so restricted by Procedures and Processes and Protocols that they are not allowed to let any personal initiative or knowledge to interfere with the ISO9000000-ready box-ticking. Think - every time some appalling crime or utter failure involving a statutory body takes place, there is the usual chorus from the Great Ignorant and the Professionally Thick, of - "We Need Learn Lessons And Put Proper Procedures In Place, To Ensure It Never Happens Again! " [It does, albeit the details differ.] Maybe that's why - maybe each new "procedure" acts against anybody doing what they meant to do, from doing it properly when the situation - be it a crime or an innocent workshop on a flood-less hill - presents something not on the drop-down menu.. Do "We" learn? Not if the Inquiry Report or the internal Managerial Review is published but then filed and forgotten! Not if some well-meaning but ill-thought new regulation or process is "rolled out" - that phrase a sure death-knell to efficiency and sense - despite it working only in its original situation. . So perhaps it's not that your local planners are foolish. Perhaps they have no choice but to issue orders they probably know but must not admit, are foolish. So they end up looking foolish personally. I'm sure there's a poem in there somewhere... 'An ode to a petty fuctionary' lol

Will be there on Thursday. The poor wallet is battered and bruised his month, so not likely to be able to take advantage of any deals that may be on offer, but very much looking forward to perusing others work for inspiration! Jay |

I've had an email about a response to a classified ad, but it doesn't provide any info as to who has made the response or any contact email etc. I'm wondering if there's a bug where, I'm pretty sure anyway, it used to come to the forum inbox by default and optionally give email info? |

All a preliminary Google finds regarding a Part P certificate is to state that the person ding the job is qualified to do so? If that's all it is then I'm fine as this is a professional sparky that does most of the residential work in this area. Am I missing something? |

Jay You didn’t forget to get a Part P certificate included for your workshop did you, hopefully your Sparky included it in his estimate, authorities can be very pedantic about certifications. Dave W Surely not for a hobby shop?? Say it ain't so...! |

Just for clarity, the wall in question will be a stud wall separating the rest of the garage... |
