You can find your own proof or the lack of, on tinernet

I agree Dave, he should have provided his own proof when making that claim.

Sherwood I've found to be some of the best cutting tools available,

Just worth pointing out that Sherwood tools come from a forest in China and have never been anywhere near Nottingham, but nice to know that you find the far east product one of the bestyes

Can you show me some proof of this, bearing in mind this is normally sold for £54 as the metric equivalent here shows 25mm dovetail I've never seen any Chinese tools of this type sold for that kind of money, or of this quality, but I'll gladly look in to your information showing me these are made in China.

Excuse my ignorance, is the 1" referred to the shank or the biggest end of the cutter?

1 Inch refers to the full width of the cutter, if you were to to place it upright sitting on a rule, The shank is 1/2 inch on that one I believe.

Why do people scorn at someone who likes to keep their tools/work space and machines clean? is being untidy and creating unsafe work space good? taking ages to find things because you're unorganized?

If you'd watched his video it explains he sleeved the quill bore of his Chinese mill with a bronze sleeve because it had half a millimeter of play when extended, which is pretty terrible, my Flott drill press doesn't even have that much play, he also hand scraped all the ways turning it in to good little machine, I bet there are people 3 times his age on here who haven't undertaken anything like that,

I guess people think differently, some look at his workshop and say I bet he's doing nothing in there because it's so clean and tidy, when I see someone with a pigsty of a workshop I say to myself, I bet they don't do much work in there, how could anyone get anything done in that mess.

A week or so ago, someone started a thread, is a £10 Chinese dovetail cutter any good,

Zoro tools(Cromwell) have a system where when an item hasn't sold for x amount of time, it auto generated a price drop, sometime well below it's value, I just bought 2 items from them that have been reduced, one a 60 degree dovetail cutter from Sherwood cutting tools, this normally sells for about £55, it was £7.99 when I bought my first, it's £8.70 now, still cheaper than a Chinese one, and a set of 5 centre drills for £12.99, normally about £20-22

Sherwood I've found to be some of the best cutting tools available, I hope this post is allowed, I'm not affiliated with this seller in any way, just thought a few people might appreciate this bargain dovetail cutter.

Thread: 2 pack, enamel...paint advice please!

Nicholas, HVLP guns can save paint when using say, 40 liters a week, over time you'll notice a saving, spraying a single car wing for example, as a one off, the saving of paint would be negligible,

also, you should never have your vision impaired regardless of what gun you use, I'd guess you have the pressure too high if you experienced this.

HVLP guns were brought in to save paint in body shops that use masses of it, they don't atomise the paint as well though, so a cheap standard gun, will typically give you a better finish than a cheap HVLP gun, they also use less air, for someone who has 5.6cfm compressor as the OP stated, and would probably only use it very occasionally, so paint wastage would not be a consideration as in commercial use, a standard gun would be the better option.

I just noticed you said you used a LVLP gun in your earlier post, but said you used a HVLP gun in your second post?

I just used B16 as all my chucks seem to be B16, I think Arc Euro also sells some obscure drilling adapters, I think they even had a female MT2 to straight shank for using MT2 drill bits in a cordless drill.

When I left school 17 years ago I spent 2 years at college training as a panel beater and painter, I can offer you this advice,

By Enamel do you just mean gloss top coat? this would be a 2k gloss Acrylic top coat you want.

If you're not spraying in an enclosed area you can use one of these Gerson masks (not inside a small shed)

**LINK**

High end spray guns are needed for high end paints, IE water based base coats, being very thin they need excellent atomisation, the low pressure spraying (HVLP) is for material being more efficiently put on the panel, completely unnecessary for home gamers, they are air hungry as the name implies, so avoid them.

Avoid the starter Devilbis gun, they sell a cheap one that is not made by them, and is no better than a 25 quid job from machine mart.

Using a Gerson mask and standard gun (non HVLP) you can spray with your small compressor, you may have to pause for it to catch up while you're spraying. but for a few small panels, this shouldn't be a problem.

If you want some more advice on which gun to buy, let me know.

Fit a modern on/off NVR switch would be my advice. It can be remote from the machine, if you are so worried about the aesthetics, with a simple break push for stopping it.

I took delivery of this today, I was going to keep it completely original, but I'll follow your advice, and put a modern NVR on/off switch after I've rebuilt and repainted it, red is not a great colour in my opinion, on a side note, this machine is an incredibly well built little thing, the table is fully hand scraped, looks like it's had the vice on there 99% of its life, apart from a couple of marks, it's immaculate.

30/03/2019 23:53:40

Thank you for the reply, that's very interesting that the company is still in business, I'll definitely send them an email at some point to quiz them on it.

29/03/2019 22:55:54

Also if anyone can recommend a period correct on/off switch that would be helpful, it's the only thing missing.

29/03/2019 21:05:07

I came across this little milling machine for a reasonable price this week, it looked like it was all there, even had the original vice still with it, not knowing when I bought it, that it was quite an unusual little machine, with very little information about it online, I figured if anywhere, this is the place most likely someone might have owned one of these and could maybe tell me more about it, yes I've read the entry on lathes.co.uk.

Thanks for the reply Nigel,Simon, thank you for confirming that, Phil yes it seems very nice, well worth an extra 50 quid over buying a new import in my opinion.

19/03/2019 23:49:36

Joseph Noci, what Lathe is that in your photo?

19/03/2019 23:47:25

I'd use a 2k Acrylic gloss top coat automotive paint on top of 2k filler primer, this gives a very tough gloss top coat that looks like powder coating.

I just bought a Hofmann 10" rotary table, there's a slight bit of backlash, any owners of one of these confirm how you can adjust this?

Is that allen screw to the right of the logo have anything to do with it?

Thread: Cast Iron stress relieving
13/03/2019 23:46:44

Paul, after doing a little research, there was a discussion on a well known Machinist site, apparently the US navy did research on the leaving outside to weather theory, and the conclusion was it made little to no noticeable difference, there used to be a lot of placed here in Leicester that I could have popped in to to ask years ago, but these days they seem to be fewer and further between, and make themselves very unapproachable to Joe Public.

Hopper, I like the BBQ idea a lot, a couple of bags of charcoal sounds like my kinda budget, it could be left at heat for an hour or so, then periodically add a few bits of charcoal to give it a nice slow descent back to cool, and doing this at home I could repeat 2 or 3 times over 4 weeks or so, thanks for idea, I think that's the route I'm going to take.

13/03/2019 00:32:02

A few weeks back those who read it might remember a thread about straight edges, one of the members on here (thank you Brian) made a small batch, I just received mine, from the info I can find, views on stress relieving seem to vary, anyone have any experience on this subject?

Will doing several cycles in a kitchen oven do? would it be better to have it done properly? and if so, does anyone know where? all I can find is places that seem to deal with big industrial jobs, not sure how receptive they'd be if approached by some random for a single small job.

'They're sports springs you see'

Sounds dodgy to me, one, you'll have to inform your insurance if aftermarket parts are fitted, two, she might have just been BS you to rip you off and they're just standard, three, a garage should never fit non standard parts without your permission, four, you should have refused to pay.
