Thread: Restoration and modifications to a Tom Senior light vertical mill |

Thanks. That should work fine, for me. It's not going to be a very rigid set-up so, I'll only be taking very light cuts. If it takes all morning to cut the rebate, that's ok! I'll do plenty of experimentation first. |

I've never used indexable cutters but I don't see why not. 25mm dia. is fine and with integral 2MT....... I hadn't spotted those on the Arc website. Thanks old mart. |

I need a 1" dia. cutter for the end radius. I could get one with a 1/2" shank and use a MT2 collet to mount it as high as possible in the spindle. Was thinking of this cutter Edited By Miles Hellon on 14/10/2021 19:55:18 |

Thanks again for your suggestions old mart. 15 months later and I've been wondering if it might be better to take the machine to the workpiece......... The sawbench I'm modifying has a sliding table. It would be possible to mount the ram of my Dore Westbury to the sliding table in order to mill the slot in the main section of the table. In the picture the cut is highlighted in red. Thanks old mart. Counterbalancing with weight is a good idea. I'm not too happy working at the limit of longitudinal travel either. Jobs like this are a good case for having a head which rotates around the axis of the column.... Looks like it will be a day's preparation for 1/2 hour machining Miles |

No progress on the Light Vertical itself but I need to use it to do some modifications to a Wadkin sawbench that I'm restoring.... I'd appreciate some feedback on this... I have to cut a rebate into the edge of the saw's table. This is my plan to support the table on the mill, using the existing fixing system and two 50mm x 20mm bars. Does it look ok? I could put a jack where the ribbing reduces? The table weighs about 45kg...... Miles |

Tried heating up the chuck's collar with my soldering iron, in an attempt to free it. No luck with that. Anyway, managed to extract the chuck with the wedges, using this setup: Thanks again for the help. |

Thanks Jason, This is to remove a collet chuck from the machine. I could turn the head horizontally and support the wedge on a machine vice on the bed? Miles |

I've already soaked mine in penetrating oil and hit the drawbar as hard as I feel comfortable doing. I was worried about damaging the bearings. Will try with the wedge set and a clamp. Miles |

Hi Steve, Timely bump. Just about to start working on mine again. Just received the No. 6 chuck removal wedge set which I ordered from the U.S. on Monday! Any one have advice on using these to extract a very tight MT2 arbor? Miles |

Thanks Les. Yes, I really should mark the phase wires! Regards, Miles |

Les, The light is connected to L1 and L2 input terminals. Because L2 is the ghost phase from the converter, I guess it only becomes active when the motor is running. I'll changeover the light connection from L2 to L3. Regards, Miles |

Hi David, Thanks. Good idea, I'll try that. Kind regards, Miles |

Les, Emgee, The light runs on 24V. There is a 12.5V/25V transformer in the light switch box. With the present wiring, the light does work, but only when the machine is running! Emgee, Haven't tried the light yet. No bulb for it. But I know what to do if it doesn't work Thanks, Miles |

Thanks Emgee, that was indeed the key...... In fact there were/are two faults! The first was that when I swapped the converter outputs to change motor rotation direction I connected either L1 or L3 to the L2 input terminal in the NVR switch. The second fault is that the start button only works if it's pressed in a certain way! You need to press on the right side of the button. If you press on the left or middle of the button, nothing happens! It was this combination of needing specific phase connections and behaviour of the start button that was so confusing! Thanks to you all for your help with this. Regards, Miles |
