Thread: Electrical help please

Thank you all.  Yes, it's a Hipps Toggle arrangement. At the moment, I have a pulse every 20 seconds or so but I am able to change the timing etc fairly easily.

Lots to keep me occupied here. Quite looking forward to it actually

Many thanks, David

This is where I am up to with John Wilding's Large Balance Wheel clock. At the moment, I'm running it on a transformer as it eats batteries. The large 'D' cell batteries last for around 48 to 50 hours. According to 'The Book' the coils are wound with a resistance of 10 ohm, now, if my sums are correct, with a voltage of 4.5v this gives a 0.5 amp load which seems a lot and there is no wonder the batteries don't last long. It's not a problem, as it runs ok on the transformer, I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the matter.

As always, Many Thanks,

David

Motorycling - Easter 2020 style

Nice sunny Good Friday, so out with the bike !

Remove security & dust cover - move bike to drive.

Wash down to remove storage dust that the cover didn't totally keep off.

Chamy dry.

Apply AutoGlym Enhanced Gloss Protection to all painted sufaces - wait as instructed, then buff off.

Polish all chrome & polished alloy bits with Meguires NXT metal polish.

Clean all black plastic bits with AutoGlym Black Trim cleaner.

After 7 hours of hard cleaning & polishing, admire bike before returning to garage, replace security & dust cover.

Go back in to house & sulk !

My sympathies.

I love the jet kart. Absolutely insane.

I had a short and non-illustrious career racing karts. Class 4 standard with a 197cc Villiers engine. Gas flowed ports 10.5 or 11-1 compression ratio and 3 speed box.

My Mum used to have a simple philosophy: If what goes in the pot is good then the end result won't be bad.

One of my nans had a simple trifle recipe - cake, tinned fruit, jelly topped with custard and then whipped cream or later one of the instant cream substitutes. This was delicious to a child's taste buds, but unfortunately as she got older, while keeping to the basic recipe, some unfortunate combinations appeared.

Chocolate swiss roll, tinned pears, lime jelly, strawberry custard and topped with butterscotch angel delight still sticks in my memory fifty years later!

My other Nan insisted my mother had at least one day off each year and so each of us four children started in turn to cook Christmas dinner under her direction from about the age of eleven, showing us that it was easy and only a matter of timing - a lesson for which I am still grateful now!

I could tell this social isolation is getting to me when I was making some soup this afternoon. I started to wonder when I was sieving the stock, am I sieving the chicken bones or the liquid?

After much procrastination I managed to cut the bevel gears for my Durham & North Yorks TE. I'm sure they could be better but as they work I'm feeling pleased with them.

Those are brilliant Norman, I don't care how long you procrastinated

Assumption here - very dangerous! If the OP is thinking about sanitising due to the Corona virus, the current advice seems to be that good old fashioned soap is the best defence - something to do with the way soap interacts with the virus. If this assumption is wring, please ignore.

Hi, yes, I'm under no illusions, soap and water is the business. This is for when I'm out of reach of soap and water.

According to this article soap is a highly effective viricide against COVID. It basically makes the virus fall apart.

Hello John, yes soap is the answer but the sanitiser was for when I'm not near any washing facilities.

Not sure what meth's would do to your skin. Maybe dry it out too much.

Steve.

More than soluble oil?

I could add a tad of glycerine maybe.

A bit of a divergence from my usual questions here but does anyone know the difference between meth's and surgical spirit? I'm thinking along the lines of hand sanitiser. I can buy meth's but not surgical spirit. Thanks.

This clock really tempted me before I settled on the one I'm making at the moment. So I will be following your progress with interest.

Hello Bill,

Don't bank on me having any more experience than you! I suppose they took around 3 weeks but only a few hours each day in the workshop.

If I can help, feel free to contact me. Just start at the beginning and concentrate on one part at a time.

David

Cheers David, not one I'll be starting in the immediate future, as I've got a little surface grinder to get working properly. In order to do that, I need to make a bevel straightedge; in order to do that I'm on with making a couple of scrapers etc.
I'm sure you know how it goes.

Bill

I did have an advantage when blueing the smaller parts, my wife is a glass artist making this type of fused glass and she has a kiln! When she isn't looking, I re-programme it to 590F which blues steel nicely wink

I picked up one of the Hemmingway kits from John Moore (Bogstandard) in his workshop clearance.
Whilst I accept we have different machinery and you probably have more experience than me, how long do you reckon it took you to build it. (yes, I know it's not a race)

Also, any useful tips?

Bill
