Thread: Learning CAD with Alibre Atom3D

Thanks..........So simple when you know how!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..Paul

Help please......My computer went down yesterday and I eventually got my Alibre restored last night. On opening this morning when starting a new part (and also on my existing drawings) there are no planes showing in the main panel. The 'Design Explorer' panel has the AXES and PLANES greyed out. When clicking on the 'XY-PLANE' it changes to blue but nothing happens.

Do I need to re-enter the programme again and if so how. I've tried re-starting the software but it remains the same.

A frustrated Paul

Thanks Jason and Neil......I think it is two steps forward and one back. I've changed the ASC11 to Binary & the 5% works OK on the faceting. That problem solved.

I had already gone through the Atom Tutorial Manual (inches not in mm) but it is a step by step guide and no way to find individual queries. The 'HELP' button doesn't allow for finding things easy either.

Your drawing of the bottle shape comes from a different starting point than the way I was approaching the problem. I was doing it step by step as per the MEW and Manual instructions. This Atom 3D programme looks very promising and hopefully the MEW course will go further than the four months envisaged. Unfortunately age is not on my side and I need to know it all now!!

Hello Jason..........I did originally put a fillet on the edge but needed a more 'bulbous' end to which I can then still fillet the edge afterwards. I didn't want a flat end filleted or a 'rounded end. Doesn't sound as if it's possible?

I am also having problems with converting to a Cura file (stl). A simple Atom 3D drawing converted ends up in Cura as a 535mb stl file to which it is too big to load or send a copy as an attachment on an email.

I'm trying to put a dome end onto an air cylinder but cannot find the information in the help files. Can you point me in the right direction. I have been trying to adapt the instructions on page 20 of MEW but getting nowhere!

A written manual or book on the Atom 3D would be really helpful - I know I'm expecting too much but any ideas please!!

Thanks Jason & Duncan

Moved the body upwards and it showed the third XY plane so I'm OK with the problem now - Sorted

Thanks Jason

It is not having a second XY plane visually available which is causing the problem. No matter where I place the base in the window there is not a second XY plane available.

As you say it is not critical so I shall move on!

Thanks David

When fixing the base into the assembly workspace I can only find and fix constraints 1 and 2. Constraints 4 & 5 for fixing the column become 3 & 4.

Is it possible that the base enters the workspace at zero height and therefore doesn't need constraining?

Haven't tried it this morning but maybe if I tried moving the base upwards in the workspace before constraining then maybe I'll find the 3rd alignment?

I'm out for the day but will try tomorrow. I'm liking the software but wish I could learn it faster - Wish I was born with a better brain!

I'm working through the latest article and have got to the 'assembly' part. I have successfully entered the base part but on aligning them under constraints I can Align (1) & Align (2) but I cannot find Align (3)!

The Upright when entered fits into the base part without a problem and the protrusion underneath aligns perfectly as well. Everything moves as one.

My question is - Do I need align (3)? Is it possible that the 3rd axis aligns automatically?

I got to Assembly-16 before giving up and trying without the 3rd alignment and it seems to work OK

Thanks Neil

Took a while to understand what you were getting at but a nights sleep helps. I'll try it.

It definitely measures 25". If I draw a line in 2D starting at one grid line and over to the next, the box reads 25"

I normally work in metric and a new drawing starts in metric but I have changed the current drawing to inches! My existing Design Exercise Manual drawing is measured in inches.

In System Options - Drawings - Sketching - I'm ticked in Display Grid and also Snap to Grid and - X: 1.000"

In Properties - Units - General - Display Units - I have Inches in the drop down box.

Is there another place I should be changing or has Alibre 'frozen' on me - Everything else works??

To switch on/adjust the grid:

File ... system options (near bottom right)

In the options box choose Drawings--Sketching

Display, snap and sizing for the grid are among the options.

You can also change them for Parts/Assemblies.

Hope that helps,

Neil

I have tried all as above - ticking and unticking - 1" and 0.5" But my grid stays at 25". I am trying to work through the 'Alibre Design Exercise Manual' and having great difficulty. At the moment I'm using Direct Ordinate Entry but am having difficulty remembering the existing sizes!

The answer re conversion to an STL file works fine - Thanks

re Alibre

I'm a beginner and have successfully produced the drawing in issue 274. On completion and exporting it as an STL file for printing with Cura. I find on opening in Cura, the drawing is reproduced as SQUARE!!

What should I have done or done wrong?
