Thread: Is Model Engineering in Decline |

No Rev, there will not be a glut of machines around, they will be buried with their former owners. |

Thread: Are Model Engineering Exhibitions The Same |

I get the impression that many of these people have never heard of soap and water, never mind anything else. Those huge backpacks should not be allowed indoors, what the hell do they want them for anyway ? As for going shirtless----the less said about that, the better. Some tits are worth looking at,others are not ! The smell of oil,I can live with, the others are a different matter ! My dogs smell better than some of them, and that,s before the dogs are washed ! |
Thread: Lathe tool angles |
14/08/2018 09:47:41 |
I like hot chips, but not when they,re heading for me at a rate of knots. I like cheese too, much easier to cope with ! While these removal rates are impressive, and may be required in industrial situations,I doubt if they would show up often in the hobby world. Sparey mentioned in his book, while talking about HSS, that Armstrong Whitworth removed swarf 1 1/4" wide x 1/4" thick at a rate of 32ft per minute ! Makes no mention of how hot it was,but I doubt if anyone was standing in the line of fire. Perhaps had they used carbide tools, they might have been to produce 2 x 1/2" flat BMS. There are times when I produce deep cuts, mostly when I dont want them ! Has anyone else been there, done that ? |
Thread: Comparing lathes now, with lathes then. |
13/08/2018 18:38:57 |
A number of good points there Bob, I, for one do not like any machine with the motor built in. There is a lot to be said for a separate motor, since if it packs up,no big deal. I agree that the tool posts could/should be better. I t would also be nice to be able to mount work on the crossslide for boring, alas,no slots provided. When it comes to the spindle bore,Chinese machines win, hands down,no doubt about that. On that point,I was looking at a Russian lathe offered by a supplier based in Malta, which offered a 2" bore, and could be delivered to an Irish port for 10000 Euros ! Not too much wrong with that. So,I would say that the older lathes were "Of their time",the market was different, but times have changed, and as you say, mills have come along. And yes,I think Myfords are still out of reach for most people starting out. Perhaps that,s the way they want it,they have an image to protect. Had I set my sights on a Myford lathe,I doubt if I would ever have got started, like many others. |
Thread: Lathe tool angles |

I dont think I have ever measured the angles I grind on my tool bits. I just give them enough clearance to stop them fouling anything and enough top rake to give a good cutting edge. Nothing fancy, but then,I,m not too interested in making swarf at an industrial rate. Works well enough for most jobs and what,s the hurry anyway ?,it,s a hobby, not a job ,so enjoy !!. Too easy to get carried away by books, rates, times ect, forget them, they dont apply in our world [not in mine, anyway ] |
Thread: ML10 - ready for the boneyard? |
13/08/2018 12:08:58 |
Even if you do have to send it to the scrap yard, dont feel too bad about it,since it wont be alone. There will be plenty of others to keep it company, there may even be a special section for clapped out Myfords, although scrap men are not very understanding people, they see scrap as scrap, full stop ! Many moons ago,I was looking for a wood planing machine, second hand, and if you saw some of the junk being offered for sale, you,de get sick. Most of what I saw was little better than badly damaged scrap,at silly money. I walked away and bought a brand new machine for little more than that being asked for the junk. That was in 1994 and that machine is still in perfect order. So I say, dont bother with something that,s clapped out,get something that works and just get on with using it. Life is too short ! |
Thread: Facing Error |
13/08/2018 11:36:50 |
Not sure if this is of any value, but I found a somewhat similar while facing workpieces and I found that the height of the tool had a lot to do with it. May not be the problem with Dave,s job,but worth looking at. |
Thread: Lathe turning out of round parts |
13/08/2018 11:24:49 |
My thanks to JasonB for that information, that,s something I did not know [along with many other things ]. Seems there is a lot more to bearings than I thought ! Should machines be run from time to time, even dry runs,to help avoid some of these problems ?. IS it possible that the material was out-of-true to begin with ? this is not unusual with some of the stuff we get here. |

Indeed , Kwil, I thought I had heard it all,but no ! Why not use it as a bench block ?although I,m sure it has many other uses, starting with a doorstop ! Time to go to the pub !!!!! |

L.C Mason and Sparey and you can,t go too far wrong. If you can get through both of those, you,re well on the way ! Be warned , This is infectious !!! There is no known cure for it. |

I found white spirits to be as good as anything for cleaning. Get rid of the muck, then a wipe over with an oily rag. No muck,no rust ! Friend of mine uses diesel, say,s it,s better than any cleaning product. |

Thread: Need a Frame 56 size motor pulley |
07/08/2018 13:58:50 |
My local supplier keeps pulleys in many different sizes, most of them blank,so that they can be bored to suit. He can arrange to have this done if required, not all that dear, and it gets the job up and running. Dont bother messing around. |
Thread: Let's hear it for British manufacturing! |

Dave, Regarding your last comment,I dont think it will be too long at all,not in my lifetime,I,m sure, but perhaps not too long after. Think about it,how many home workshops would have had a DRO twenty years ago ? very few I think,so,twenty years hence??,Who knows ! Right now it,s not a question of where something is made, rather a question of what part of China it,s made. It,s all about cost, quality comes second. When China becomes too expensive, which it will,in time, production will simply move to somewhere else, and then we start all over again, thinking that Chinese stuff was the bee,s knee,s ! Regarding English motorcycles, can,t remember the last time I saw one of those, could be around the time Honda arrived on the scene. |
