Thread: Insert facemilsl, correct use on hardened Steel. |
13/05/2020 12:04:25 |
Why does anyone with light machines bother to buy expensive cutters and inserts, when there is no way they can provide the ideal conditions to exploit them ? Unless your time is MONEY [and if it is, you would have better machines anyway ] ,you are unlikely to gain very much. As another Member said, these inserts/cutters ect are intended for machines around 20 ton Wt with 20/30 HP motors nailed onto them, talking cuts of around 10mm, not exactly backyard workshop style ! |
Thread: Bandsaw advice |

I have a 6x4" model from Chester, which just eats the work, hacksaw has an easy life these days. No use to you, I know, but just for the record. Oven man, I would love to fit a hydraulic down feed, any info on that ? |
Thread: Where do you put your chuck key? |
08/05/2020 17:12:07 |
I keep both the chuck key and the toolpost key held in spring clips fitted to the gear cover of the head stock so that they NEVER get lost . Sad to say, everything else does . |

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2020 |
29/04/2020 15:24:31 |
What I did today was to make two weights for my 5 ton flypress using two empty dog food tins from Aldi, 1,2 kg size. When fitted with a sq core, to suit the spike on the top of the press, these tins hold almost 9kg of lead each, more than enough for me to lift up. . Not very pretty but they work very well. One could also use two old 2kg fire extinguishers which have a nice round base [which later becomes the top ] These units are about 4 1/4 " dia and when cut off about 4 1/2 " and the cut end blanked off, will hold even more lead and do look a bit better. Sad to say I had only one and needed to use the press, so needs must ! Not grade A stuff, I know, but I,m still learning. All comments good or bad welcome. |

I think Thor, that might have been just a slip of the finger, I,m sure Cai did mean along the bed, not across it. |
Thread: double spring washers |
28/04/2020 08:00:19 |
Ah Adam, Where have all the country ironmongers gone ? or even the city ones. They are now as rear as hens teeth. There are no real Hardware shops anymore, only shops selling some bits of hardware, not quite the same thing Those washers must not be much in demand these days, single spring can be bought everywhere for half nothing but double spring are sold EACH ! Must be older than I thought ! Thanks to everyone for their replies. |

Hi Everyone, Does anyone know where I can buy small amounts of double spring washers 6 8 10 12 mm ? I have tried Ali express but all I see are single spring or wavy washers. Do they go by another name ? I did find other suppliers who only sell in bulk, so, no prices given. They used to be quite common years ago, are we using something else now ? Any advice welcome and thanks in advance because I,m sure someone out there has the answer. |
Thread: SEASONING OF CAST IRON |
27/04/2020 09:09:58 |
A spindle moulder which I bought from a "Well known and respected maker" came with a fence that was so distorted as to be useless. I was obliged to have it machined by a local workshop in order to use it. When I remarked on it to the machine man, he just smiled and shook his head and said "They don't bother to season castings anymore, so this is what you get " That was in 1990, so what,s new ? |

Yet again S-O-D has hit the nail on the head. No point in turning out stuff which no-0ne can afford. How many of you guy could afford their lathes ? Even dealing with the type of customers they do, they still face serious competition from the Far East, so they will never be too interested in the market at our level. Nice to see how these things were made, but it,s a bit of old hat now. You cannot step in the same stream twice. |

S-0-D, you hit the nail right on the head ! veg was always overboiled into a soggy mess, took me ages to teach my Mother to use far less water to cook them. We did not have to put up with the horrors of powered eggs over here [I hate to think what they must have been like ], but cooking has come a long way. Most of my cooking "skills" were learned using a Primus stove while cycling, many moons ago, how I,m still alive, I do not know. Sad to see so many old brands gone. In my day, rice was never used as a main dish, mostly as a treat, with a lump of jam stuck in the middle. Now, I use rice as part of my main course, it,s a whole new world ! |
Thread: Shoe repair glue advice? |

Would love to hear of a glue/sticky stuff that really works on lost soles or shoes. I have a box full of them, too good to dump but too dangerous to wear. |
