And yes, strange to say, it really does work ! I had to do something similar many moons ago when I had very little equipment and much to my surprise [and delight ] it worked, so it,s well worth a try.

There is a lot to be said for cans with ring pulls. Yes I know they cost a bit more [dont see why this should be, but it is ] I got a pain-in-my-arse trying to open cans of anything long ago [I wish I could join things together like they do ] so now I tend to buy just ring pull tins.

Dont know, but I use a 7.5 kva unit to run my 1.5 hp lathe.

Of course it also runs my 4.5 hp planer or spindle moulder.

Like Journeyman, I also use plastic dampcourse material for this purpose, since it,s strong enough and dirt cheap, can be picked up in almost any skip and easy to replace. Plus, it will never cause any damage to your chuck.

Also works well on my mill.

I would imagine that a course blade and WD40 would help [fine blades clog up with Ali ]

50x50 is not too big and the exercise will help to build up a thirst to justify a trip to the pub later on.

Plan "B" would be to buy a Chinese junk bandsaw, like mine, still going strong after 20 years, and let it do the cutting while you do something else [like drinking the afore mentioned beer ] Just looking at it working would give a thirst. How do I know ? Ask me !

Life is too short to waste your time in that manner, cop yourself on. I gave up that game long ago and now use the hacksaw only when I have to. That,s what bandsaws were made for.
