Hello Brian Wood, I love you simple "Hands-on" method ! A man after my own heart ! And yes, strange to say, it really does work ! I had to do something similar many moons ago when I had very little equipment and much to my surprise [and delight ] it worked, so it,s well worth a try. |

Been there, done that !! There is a lot to be said for cans with ring pulls. Yes I know they cost a bit more [dont see why this should be, but it is ] I got a pain-in-my-arse trying to open cans of anything long ago [I wish I could join things together like they do ] so now I tend to buy just ring pull tins. This may be part of what they call "Progress" |

Yes Cornish Jack, I remember most of those radio shows, pity they finished, nothing on the radio now except crap. I recall using trams in Dublin, although not for long since they were scrapped in the name of "Progress" Strange to say, the latest aid to rapid transport in the city is---TRAMS [By another name, of course ] The wheel turns !! The list is too long to mention all the things I remember. |

Andrew, Most of your posts and answers were way above my pay grade but still well worth reading, if only to show how little I know [I suspect I am not alone in this ] Will I miss your posts ? Maybe not, for the above reasons, but I,m sure others will. Life is too short to get annoyed by comments or insults, do as I do, trade them ! If you dont need them, pass them on. PS I,m sure you will see things differently after a while. |

I have made so many mistakes, I must have made EVERYTHING !!! As the Yanks would say, "Sure Bud, take five " Bridges burned are very difficult to repair [speaking from bitter experience ] |

Being one of the "Great Unwashed", I think I might stick around for another while !! No matter how hard you try, you cannot please everyone. All in all, I think the Mods do a good job in a difficult situation, even though they have trimmed my wings a few times, but then, that,s their job. No-one said it was easy. Some feel it,s time to move on, simple as that, so good luck. |
Thread: Transwave converter |

Dont know, but I use a 7.5 kva unit to run my 1.5 hp lathe. Of course it also runs my 4.5 hp planer or spindle moulder. Dont see how it could do any harm, but just a thought, are you sure the converter is big enough ? I think you may need something a bit bigger. |

S-O-D and Hopper have it right ! Get a copy of Sparey,s book, no need to look any further, he has/had it all. Plus, you can take a lot of the stuff you read, with a large pinch of snuff, you run a model workshop, not a factory, so time and production do not apply. Loosen up and have fun. PS, DONT KNOW WHERE ALL THOSE YELLOW SPOTS CAME FROM. |

Thread: Swarf damage |

Like Journeyman, I also use plastic dampcourse material for this purpose, since it,s strong enough and dirt cheap, can be picked up in almost any skip and easy to replace. Plus, it will never cause any damage to your chuck. Also works well on my mill. |

I would imagine that a course blade and WD40 would help [fine blades clog up with Ali ] 50x50 is not too big and the exercise will help to build up a thirst to justify a trip to the pub later on. Plan "B" would be to buy a Chinese junk bandsaw, like mine, still going strong after 20 years, and let it do the cutting while you do something else [like drinking the afore mentioned beer ] Just looking at it working would give a thirst. How do I know ? Ask me ! Life is too short to waste your time in that manner, cop yourself on. I gave up that game long ago and now use the hacksaw only when I have to. That,s what bandsaws were made for. |
