Thread: Bad finish on BMS
22/01/2021 16:58:31

On a recent posting, one man was remarking on the poor finish he was getting on his turning. Might I suggest that he check out Sparely,s book where he will find this very issue explained ?

OK, I know it,s old hat, everyone uses tips these days [I never use them ], but simple HSS will give a first class finish, using low speed and plenty of lube.

Give it a try, it does "Exactly what it say,s in the book"

Been there, done that !

Shame on you Noel !!!

Do you really think that such "Noble" people would stoop so low ?

Dont answer that !

Simple fact is that concrete does not absorb water nearly a s well as good old soil.

What now Batman ?

PS I seem to remember that something similar happened in North Korea some years ago when they decided to cut down most of their trees in order to sell the timber for quick profit. Turned out it was not such a good idea.

To all the smart-arses out there, dont try to teach Mother Nature how to suck eggs.

Thread: How do these work
17/01/2021 10:48:15

Bob,

They are quite simple to operate

"You turns the handle, you gets the water "

Usually over your feet, if you stand in the line of fire !

They were common when I was growing up and were the only source of water in many rural areas.

In those happy days, not many houses had showers/baths ect, so these little units were good enough/

Often, they had a cast iron cup on a chain, which would be used by about 20 kids, one after the other !, and we are still all alive.

HSE ? Who are they ?cheeky

Believe nothing you read and half of what you hear [ or vice-versa ] and you wont go too far wrong.

Advice given freely by my Granny, who knew EVERYTHING..

Turns out, she was not too far off the mark.smiley

In that case, I must be one of the most experienced metal bashers on the planet !

Started off with a small scrap box, the current one is almost big enough to hold the lathe.

Learning curve seems to be never ending, more of a long road.

Reminds me of the old song "Keep right on to the end of the road "

Nice to know that I am not alone.cheeky

Thread: Pillar drill lubrication
08/01/2021 13:05:01

Dont know about lubrication, but you could do worse than replace that simple switch with a proper NVR type.

Drills have been known to come to life after a power failure. It,s an interesting experience if you happen to be in the line of fire !.

I just apply a little oil now and then, about once every 5 years or so, if I think of it. It,s not a Formula 1cheeky

Just asking.indecision

Thread: Gloves and machine tools - my stupidity.
01/01/2021 17:35:07

Not so much about gloves, but I remember a young guy who got a great "buzz cut" from a drilling machine, due to his long hair, all the fashion at the time. !

Gloves, loose clothes, even strong belts ect are all a BIG NO-NO near ANY machines..

Welding gloves ? OK since nothing is moving.

Power tools ? trust nothing, and I mean NOTHING !, a 1/2" power drill will break your arm, no problem !.

Have fun .

Thread: Walco GH610 info
28/12/2020 16:36:25

Sod, Reminds me of the man who went looing in the woods for a good walking stick.

He rejected each sample he came to, thinking he might find a better one further on.

Before he knew it, he was out of the wood, with no walking stick !

I have a Chester machine, similar to the warco but belt driven, plain, simple, but very little to go wrong.

Would I like to upgrade ? of course I would, just not worth it, machine does all I want, no point in having a machine I dont need or dont know how to use.

Horses for courses , as my Granny used to say.

Thread: New to workshop engineering.

God help you, You have no idea what you are letting yourself in for !!!!

First thing you need to do is increase the size of your shed by a factor of four, at least. Why ?, you will find out once you get started.. Workshops are NEVER big enough, remember "Junk expands to fill the room available " , tools likewise.

Yes, get the biggest machine you can manage, remember "Big machine/small job= no problem. Small machine/big job= big problem. Some good books mentioned there, Sparey is still good after all those years, sound, simple to understand advice.

Wishing you well on your new hobby and one extra piece of advice, get a BIG WOODEN BOX for scrap, you will need it, believe me ! How do I know ? dont even ask ????

PS You dont have to be nuts to be here, but it helps !!cheeky

Thread: "How was your shipping experience" email scam
27/12/2020 10:31:32

About two weeks before Christmas I received a call on my mobile phone, from a UK number I did not know, so I declined to answer it. Fast forward to a few days ago, when I received a text to tell me that my Littlewoods parcel would be delivered that day. All very nice, you might say ,except that I never heard of Littlewoods sending parcels to anyone and I was not expecting anything from anyone !

A scam ? sounds like one, just dont know where they got my number from ???surprise

Thread: cateracts.
26/12/2020 14:25:13

Hi Clive,

Yes the cost was high, but the result is worth it, believe me.

Money is money, but good sight is something else. You will get over the cost, it,s no big deal, some people spend more than that on drink or gambling, with nothing to show for it.

You have much to look forward to [no pun intended ], so enjoy your new vision and take care.

Have been there, done that, and know the score !wink
