Thread: DTI base

I have an "adjustable" one but RARELY use it. I prefer to use the use the old types which bare rigid. Why try to measure tenths of a thous with something can flap about by as much or more.

FWIW my advice is to use straight rods and monkey blocks. More rigid, and more compact.

If need be, you can make up your own fitting to suit the mag base. You may be able to reuse some of the clamps from your existing one. Just dispense with the adjuster.

Howard

Sorry, but what are monkey blocks?

Thread: Any other bowmakers on here?
15/07/2019 20:36:37

I have rehaired a few bows and recambered one using dry heat. I almost bought a good quality carbon bow once and had it on loan for a few weeks. Played really nice but I bought the other one I had to try out. A pernambuco from a local maker. Bows really make a difference in how my bass sounds!

I play German style and for some reason these are usually made with plain mother of pearl instead of abelone. A real pity as I love the look of French bows.

I'm a radiation protection expert myself and probably owe my job to this accident. I started my job in the early 90s and a lot of funding was available for education and training in the radiation sector, after many lean years. My compliments for how this issue is discussed in this thread. A few details:

plutonium is also very toxic, as are uranium isotopes. For some of the isotopes the chemical toxicity is more harmful than the radiotoxicity.

The long lived contamination of Europe is caused by cesium-137 which has a half life of 30 years. If the half life was much longer it would be less radioactive.

The main problem directly after the accident was deposit of iodine-131 which has a half life of 8 days. There was a significant increase of thyroid cancer in Russian children 10 years after the disaster.

This table from Hyperphysics lists the power outputs of various instruments and rates a large orchestra at under 70W. I'm always a bit surprised how weedy musical instruments are. Are big amplifiers only needed because loudspeaker efficiencies are so low, or is it because rock and roll sounds best with the Volume at 11?

As all true music fans know even the best amps and speakers are garbage unless connected with Industrial Gauge Oxygen Free Gold Plated Silver Litz Wire Tri-filar wound on a helical PTFE core, and then fitted with bespoke insulating jackets hand-knitted in special-mix Kevlar, Carbon Fibre, and Vucana by nubile maidens. Nothing is too much trouble for proper audio pleasure...

This is probably the power needed in the living room for reproduction of the music? For stage performance we need a bit more power to fill a hall satisfactory. But I'm always surprised what I can manage with my double bass unamplified. As long as I play indoors....

Thumb red and blue? By mistreatment of the thumb or from marking ink?

Good point, Jason ... but

(a) the big gear, used in conjuction with a special worm, remains an interesting possibility

Certainly cheap enough to have a play with:

Interesting possibility. But if you zoom in on the picture and look at the spur wheel I think the quality is immediately apparent. But this might be a by QC rejected part which ended up as a photo model?

Do you know this plan?

Doesn't need a lot of machining.

You can use a mechanical connection followed by soft soldering the result can be quite unvisible is the connection is placed in the right place.

Maybe a ceramic bearing instead of metal. The white ceramic could be easily mistaken for plastic.

Thread: ML7 cross slide backlash
20/02/2019 11:28:43
Posted by Chris Trice on 19/02/2019 I was told that the nuts were heat treated which often changed their dimensions so they were matched to specific feedscrews as pairs to keep backlash to a minimum.

What made the lead screws different in dimensions? Also heat treatment after thread cutting?

Jann

Were do you live? And what do you need? For hot rolled steel I go to Hardeman in Veenendaal and for brass, free cutting steel and aluminium I go to the Locloods in Molenhoek.

I live in Nijmegen myself.
