Thread: Parting off 25mm copper
26/04/2021 06:09:37

There are times when you need to be brave and part off, and times when you pick the quicker and less stressful option and grab the hacksaw! For me personally this would be one of those times. I've made a small bit of wood that fits snugly over the bed under the chuck to protect it for exactly these times.

Thread: RR Merlin Scale Models

Maybe they were put off by the previous comment and didn't want to deviate this thread off track, or decided not to engage as sometimes it just isn't worth it when the person asking has been disagreeable to converse with.

Thread: Buying a used car

If the mileage lines up then maybe there isn't any skullduggery at play. The MoT's could be because someone was trying to correct a pesky fault, like emmissions. But it does suggest it has had niggles in the past. Could be fine now of course.

Thread: What to do when you lose something
22/04/2021 21:30:02

My grandad complained for years that I had nabbed his good phillips screwdriver when we were restoring my Morris Minor. About five or six years later I took the glovebox out to get to some wiring and there it was, tucked into something holding a clip back. It had done about 35,000 miles jammed in there.

Thread: Buying a used car

That isn't a rare car; if thats the model you are after there must be a hundred out there that don't have black marks over their history.

Personally, if in doubt, walk away. The dealer will have an explaination, but what dealer wouldn't?

Ah, thats cunning. Thank you

Whilst idly browsing the internet I found mention of Rex Tingley's Valveless design of locomotive.

Sugar

I can't find mention of how he achieved this "valveless" operation. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Hopefully this link will help. They list the designs there that they have plans for.

I couldn't find the words 'cost' 'price' or 'dollar' anywhere in that document

.It’s about the pursuit of perfection

... other documents are available if you are obsessed by those three words. MichaelG.

If you've worked for the Americans you know they produce bull***t like this all the time but never comply with it.

I worked for Boeing, and yes we did.

Thread: Loco Cylinder Casting Pattern Advice
20/04/2021 15:26:02

Do you need to cast the bores in? Could you leave one or both out of the casting process?

Thread: Southworth Engineering
15/04/2021 21:09:41

I've not long finished a 3" Southworth pump from blackgates, purchased a few weeks ago. I can't speak for others but it was quite swiftly dispatched in my case.

Was a pleasure to build.

Thread: Distorted ship's hull steel panels
13/04/2021 03:26:33

I know its a lot flimsier but I remember the feeling of horror when I first saw a Seaking taking off from up close. As the tail rotor takes up the torque the tail boom flexes slightly, and all the rectangular rivet arrangements on the tail boom deform enough to make it look like a diagonal line has been scribed from one corner of the sheet metal to the other in each "box".... hard to describe but you would know it if you saw it. It makes sense of course, but still unnerving!

Thread: Can any of you guess what this is from?

Some sort of industrial mimeograph machine or similar? The belt drives are intriguing?

Thread: Steam oil
05/04/2021 19:16:03

You say it had eased itself back to normal; are you saying then that it had physically stopped turning? I don't think the viscosity of the oil is the problem here.

If the lubricator was of the oscillating type (not sure of the exact name, but the type LBSC used to specify) then the cylinder would have just lifted off its seat if it was blocked; it would have still kept turning. If it is of a less forgiving kind then a physical blockage or stuck valve may have caused it to jam solid, but I would suspect its the ratchet or clutch giving you the issues here. Failing that, a mechanical issue with the pump itself. But in my opinion (and I'm still very much an inexperience amateur) I don't think the viscosity of the oil would cause the issue you are describing.

I suspect the pump body itself had something in it which caused it to jam.

Their school also teaches them about finances, pitfalls with finance and such. Why oh why oh why can't they teach them something useful instead, like Latin, playing the recorder or how oxbow lakes are formed.

It is a shame that schools do not seem to teach the same things that they used to. I went to a secondary modern which had metalwork, woodwork and technical drawing, all of which I learned.

They teach those things at my kids school, albeit CAD rather than technical drawing. I guess it rather depends on the school. That means we get the chance to pass on our skills.
