Thread: New lathe "running in " |
23/02/2018 08:40:38 |
Thanks Jason, Can I be a thick newbie and ask how to take the backlash out of the gear train please. Thanks Martin |

I have ordered a new WM 250 do they need "running in " to get the best out of them or can you just start playing with them and can any one please tell me what tool size you need for them so I can get a couple in ready. Cheers Martin |
Thread: Tooling to buy with Warco WM250 and WM16? |

Thanks John and Mick, the ML7 is far from clapped out but I just think it is time to move on to a different level, I have only had it since last September (thanks Ian) and I have learnt so much on it coming from how do I switch it on and what does that do to turning out some decent work. Thanks again Martin |

Many thanks Jason and Mick that helps me a lot, just one last question I'm sure that been asked many times am I mad thinking of swapping a ML7 for a 250v (non inverter) Martin |
16/02/2018 18:01:10 |
Can I also ask a question about the WM250V as I'm thinking about buying one I currently have a ML7 and when I am tapping I knock the belt drive off and spin the chuck by hand to get the tread started can you do that with a WM250V. Cheers Martin |
Thread: Anodising kits |

I've swithered over trying anodising out a few times I know what you mean I spoke to some one at Gateros yesterday and it sounds like a real faff depends on what grade ali you use, have buckets with acid, dyes, sealing, cleaning etc. everywhere in a limited space, how long you leave it in the tank as to what colour/shade you are going to get, think I'm going to give it a miss for now. Thanks Mick, I was looking at one from Gateros **LINK** that looks very similar and about the same money (and I could just nip down and pick one up and maybe call in at castle on my way) you can also include the power supply for an extra £76 as to Caswell their kit is basically the same with a couple of fish tank heaters (£20) hot plate (£12) and S/S bucket (£12) off the bay, I make butt hooks, springer cocking lever handles, cheek piece posts etc, so just wanted to add another string to my bow, if they was any good and worked. Cheers Martin |

No worries Roy, you would be surprised how things have changed. Martin |

Yes anodising so the bits are coloured, bluing is just the barrels and not aluminium as a general rule. Martin |

Has any one any experience of anodising kits and can point me in the direction of a good one please, it would be for small one off bits that I make for air guns so nothing to big would be required. Thanks Martin

Thread: chuck for a cross slide on a ML7 |
18/01/2018 15:05:02 |
Good thinking batman, never thought about doing it that way, job for when I get back from my hols and I have to say getting rid of the Myford (it's five years older than me and I'm not young) for a Chinese one. I don't think there will be many of those around in 65 years it's just the £440 that makes me cough a bit but I have fitted DRO to my mill and can't believe how much easier it is. Cheers Martin |
18/01/2018 11:13:18 |
Yes nick, that is the sort of thing I was thinking about if I fitted a DRO because if you just use your tailstock to drill etc, you still have to guess or use a drill stop on it, that's why I was thinking of something on the cross slide also that's why I asked on beginners page as I have only had a lathe for 4 months. |
18/01/2018 08:43:16 |
As the title says can you fit a chuck for a cross slide on a ML7 as I'm thinking of fitting a DRO to it (still can't make my mind up as to sell the ML7 and buy a WM180 with a fitted DRO buy the time you have finished it's not far off the same price) as I could see an advantage in having a chuck on the cross slide with a DRO. Cheers Martin |

What is the best thing for cutting a groove for an "O" ring I have a Quick change tool post with a 10mm tool holder on a ML7. Cheers Martin |
Thread: DRO for a ML7 |
19/12/2017 17:02:40 |
Is it worth fitting a DRO to a ML7 the one I have been looking at is the Allendale/M-Dro one at £440 or would it be more cost effective to sell it and buy a new one with dro fitted some thing like a WM 180 with DRO fitted for £1095. Thanks for any input Martin |
Thread: Dividing Plates |
26/11/2017 20:24:52 |
I think I'm starting to get the grasp of it, but with me I find actually doing it gives me a lot better understanding of it. As to the malt ahh the good old days, strictly soft drinks now, but thanks for the advice. Thanks Martin |
26/11/2017 19:33:14 |
You are quite correct it is a 1:90 one from Warco and thanks for all your advice you have managed to fry my brain nicely on a Sunday evening, I think I will have to fit it and have a play just to give me some Idea what's what because I'm afraid at present it all seem's double dutch but hopefully when I have had a play it will make some sort of sense Cheers |

Hi I have bought a HV6 Rotary Table with Dividing Plates, is there an Idiots guide on how to use the Dividing Plates, what I have seen up to now a degree in maths would be handy. Cheers Martin |
Thread: SPG Tools |

I ment that it has the R8 spindle fitted instead of a MT as most other small mills have and you have to buy the collet set extra from either them or any other supplier, I guess I should have said spindle not chuck in my post but I'm new to this game and sometimes use the wrong term. Cheers Martin |
