Thread: Workshop Mistakes (True Confessions) |

Noticed the little wire brush that cleared the teeth on the bandsaw had stopped turning. Reached out to give it an encouraging flick...

Thread: Washer for leaking 3D print nozzle? |
27/02/2023 10:28:08 |
Just to state the blooming obvious... if the plastic is leaking passed the thread on the nozzle, then the seal you want to fix should be at the end that stops it ever reaching the thread, not at the end where you can see it emerging as a black glob |
Thread: CR-Cells Can Go BANG! |
21/02/2023 10:19:53 |
Posted by Nigel Graham 2 on 20/02/2023 22:30:21:
Robin - Since the torch was inside my shirt, nestled against my chest, I am a reasonably certain fire was not the cause. Body heat sufficient? I'd not have thought so. If you throw handfuls into a waste paper basket you can expect a few bangs as they short each other out. Makes you jump. The contents swell as the cell is used up. Eventually, they leak horrible fumes that denature nearby lead-free solder and stop everything from working. Replace it with good old 60:40 and it all bursts back into life. I used to get through about 4000 a year and have never known one to detonate without some kind of abuse. However, as we have ruled out the impossible and everything that did not happen, we must go with whatever is left. I think you are probably right |
20/02/2023 12:47:49 |
If you accidentally incinerate an alkaline button cell the contents boil and the case opens with a crack. If you short a new one out, it heats up and does the same. If you accidentally incinerate a box full it can be quite exciting |
Thread: Dro advice for mill |

...and if the angles get too weird, there is always the trusty 3D printer best, Robin |
Thread: Do many people run 2 Milling Spindles |
08/02/2023 12:54:52 |
That's the trouble with machine video's on YouTube... Everyone else's machine looks better than yours. Helps if you ask yourself how they would cut a 20DP gear in cast iron |
Thread: Who labelled the X and Y axes for DROs on lathes and mills? |
28/01/2023 11:13:05 |
It's like trying to remember that the word data is plural. Always sounds wrong. On my lathe the DRO shows numbers for X and Z. If I want to zero Z, I press the button next to the Z value. If I want to set Z, I can press the Z button until the cows come home with no effect... I have to press the Y button instead. Whoever set it up didn't like the taste of XZ any more than I do. It just sounds icky best Robin |
Thread: Simple PCB layout software |

The easy one is the one you are used to, everything else is a nightmare. I am still using the same Protel I have been using for the last 30 years or so. |
Thread: Boxford 8"shaper |
19/01/2023 10:48:16 |
Did you get/are you fixing the vertical feed? I had to tighten up the horizontal before I dared turn it on I think I want to fit a fridge-style, internal light that comes on when I open the octagonal door. I't a bit gloomy in there. Robin |
Thread: Motor speed with inverter. |
06/01/2023 12:19:30 |
You lot are clever, one little vertical separation missing at the top and I get all confused best Robin |

My mill motor plate states that the 3 phase motor is single phase, it does 2300rpm at 50-100Hz. At the top it says, "FREQUENCY-CONVERTER MOTOR" which seems to mean, "Numbers randomly selected from each side of the VFD. Wonder if it really could take 100Hz for 2300rpm? When it arrived the VFD was on its' last knockings, perhaps someone tried best Robin |

Thread: Dividing head |
05/12/2022 23:02:06 |
I got the Vevor with the 100mm chuck and think it is incredible value for money. How do they do it at the price? I became fixated on the backlash and got it down to 0.1 degrees, worst case. Self-defeating because I cannot resist taking up the slop with a quick twist of the chuck before locking the spindle and it would probably be easier to feel 1 degree than 0.1 degree

Thread: The printer port isn't dead! (linuxcnc is cool and powerful) |
05/12/2022 11:17:11 |
Happy days when you could actually take over the timer interrupt with Bill Gates blessing. I still have the original IBM PC Technical reference manual with all the circuit diagrams including the printer port. It looked suspiciously like IBM made a motherboard with active low interrupts and expansion cards with active high Rather than do a massive trip to the dump they found a weird edge-triggered interrupt and pretended that was what they always intended. Of course you only got one bite of the cherry, miss the edge and it was gone, but that was how things were and everyone muddled through bestest Robin |

Thanks to John Lisles' excellent translation of the XSY AT VFD manual, from this very site, my mill finally has a credible on/off, reverse and speed control for the vertical spindle Next, I put the same at the other end of the ram for the horizontal motor, or maybe I will do the swivel arm conduit I have planned for those wires dribbling out the side. So much to do and all of it fun bestest, Robin |

Not just today, but yesterday as well. While waiting for the drawings and construction notes for the Hemingway Kits Chenery V-Twin engine to arrive, I amused myself with this variation on the indexing theme that I employed on my low-profile rotary table and simple indexer projects. John Did you get a laser engraver for your birthday? Sometimes I think I could do wonderful things with a laser engraver, particularly graduated scales. I am just not a pantograph sort of person |

Springs not here yet so I go for a trial fit. Heeds another 10.8mm of spline Muggins here forgot that you don't get to use the whole spline length if cut on a horizontal mill. The mighty Rong-Fu mill drill leaps to my rescue. I will admit to wilting slightly when I hit this latest set-back, but the deed is now done, all water under the bridge. Next the wiring |

Aha! Probably a far simpler solution than my one of making a completely new driving sleeve, with its internal splines, external keyways and multiple concentric diameters for my 1960's Beaver milling machine. It is nice to have a mill that doesn't sound like a Vickers gun when taking interrupted cuts though! Edited By Mark Rand on 23/10/2022 19:32:42 A glutton for punishment Robin

Fixing my mill spindle clatter with a zero-backlash sprung second spline thingumabob. Brass seemed like the best bet. Can't finish it until longer springs and a new threading tool arrive from China |
