Thread: ER Chucks
21/10/2018 12:47:06

Thanks again gentlemen, advise much appreciated. A very wet and windy Sunday afternoon here in S. Cumbria and a neighbour wants an 'emergency bracket' for his gutter making - so I'd better get on with it!

I've been trawling through various publications and catalogues this last week and in connection with Myford lathes there keeps cropping up ER25 and ER32 chucks. Are these a Myford product for Myford lathes or are they a separate but compatible system, are they a collet chuck or a milling chuck? I'm probably missing the 'bleeding obvious' but I would appreciate some guidance gents.

Thread: Comfortable Working Height for a ML7
11/10/2018 05:40:38

Thanks Model Engineers, bench top height of >36" seems to feel right minus a 1" rubber type mat. Also a bum perch will take the ache out of prolonged standing (which seems to be far worse than moving about). As for clogs, I used to ware them, ideal for hot work as they wont burn through the sole if hot work stood on, definitely a knack in getting used to walking in them. They soles were shod with steel 'caulkins' and your approach could be heard before your appearance by a couple of minutes, but very comfortable though.

In L H Spareys's book 'The Amateurs Lathe' he suggests a convenient working height of a lathe to be the height from the floor to cross slide to equal that of the operators bent elbow to the floor. Now I've got arthritis of the lower back and I think at this height I will have to stoop a little to operate my machine meaning discomfort for any length of time, does anyone else have a thought on comfortable working heights?

Can I ask why and when are ME threads used please?

Are they a scaled down version of BSP threads?

Thanks Guy

Thread: Chilled Cast Iron
06/10/2018 23:56:19

For the slow cooling out of weld repaired cast iron I find agricultural/slaked lime the best thing, I don't disturb the piece until the next day and (mostly) have no visible cracks to worry about. Pre-heating (for welding) being just as important as controlled post heat too, I would say.

Thread: It's Only Taken Me 46 years!

Thanks for your welcome and advice chaps, I realise a forge is not the healthiest environment for a lathe (grinder particles especially) and I'm going to make a Sterling Board cover and perhaps some trace heat in the from of a tubular heater for the 9 months of winter we get in South Cumbria,( the other 3 months being just bad weather! )

From memory the cost of a new Myford ML7 was about £530 in '72, and I can recall making a pocket money graph against time to project a likely purchase date at a rate of 10/- a week.

I think I'm ahead of my schedule so can't complain.

Looking forward to your opinions, help and guidance.

Hello, My name is Guy and I've finally got my hands on a lathe (Myford ML7) after sending off for a brochure to Myfords in 1972 aged 9. In the intervening years I've cultivated a love of railways and engineering in general. I am also an O Gauge modeller mainly scratch building locos from the pre-grouping era. As for work, I'm a Blacksmith specializing in the restoration of architectural ironwork (both cast and wrought) and, I can say that my forge looks all the better for a Myford nestled in the corner. So, being not very experienced in machine work or bench fitting I intend to pick your collective brains. (Blacksmiths rules only have 1/8" delineations on them so please be patient with me!)
