Last week Yodel tracking told me that a 110 x 275 x 850mm parcel had been delivered through my letter box. Although it was supposedly sent "signed for" they cannot supply a copy of the signature. Still not found the parcel after checking with all the neighbours and now in dispute with Yodel once again. Oh the joys of Xmas shopping.

Sorry cannot help on the motor removal never having seen that mill.

Is the motor 3 phase 415vac ? Are you intending to run it on a 230vac single phase to 230vac 3 phase VFD ?

You usually need to have a dual voltage motor to run correctly on a 230v VFD

If I remember rightly running a 415 vac 3 phase motor on a 3 phase 230vac supply will reduce the speed by about 1/3. If you ramp it up on the VFD the torque rating will drop through the floor. I stand to be corrected but I think this is about right. Hopefully this will bump the thread and some one will come along with a definitive answer.

I have used kits from these people before with good results. It was a while ago so not sure if the details are current. They sell American made kits in different sizes and for different applications. The rods work at approx. 380C. Call them for advice on the application.

For anyone interested I just received through my door the Chester Machine Tools winter open week flyer.

This event takes place at their Hawarden site CH53PZ from 2nd to the 6th of December 2019. Free tea coffee snacks provided. They have deals on most things by the looks of it.

I used to teach gas welding/brazing at a technical college 2 evenings a week about 15 years ago. That all came to grinding halt when it was decided that 3 people were needed to run the course for H & S reasons. I had managed pretty well for 5 years on my own without any accidents. No volunteers came forth and the college was not able or willing to pay for help so that course went the way of many others. The machining courses stopped several years previous to that. SOD has hit the nail on the head. It matters not what you produce as long as someone will pay for it.

Seems strange that they do not allow you to run a quick demo under controlled circumstances now and then but allow the small gauge live steam loco's to run all day. Also allowing some of the hot air engines to run a naked flame. I wonder when they will stop that happening. Maybe they should stop the catering trucks using gas to cook on. H & S gone mad once again.

I would recommend Tom Lipton's Metalworking books. Sink or Swim & Doing it better. Excellent books with 100's of colour photos. A wealth of in depth tips & tricks for machinists, welders & fabricators. Available from Amazon.

I have both and think they are more up to date than many of the Worshop series though I have most of them as well.

Of course you will probably need Brian Woods offering as well  Gearing of lathes for screwcutting.

But a good idea never the less.

The only pitfall I see is getting all the tolerances to match up. Perseverance and some fitting and a bit of scraping and it will go together like magic. Making time is the only problem I find with any project. Good luck I hope it all goes well for you Noel

You could but it may be a little slack.

5Ba tap drill size = 2.65mm 3mm x 0.5 tap drill size = 2.5mm

I would probably drill a test hole & tap 5ba then tap it 3mm and see what it feels like.

If it is too loose then stick with the slot heads until a miracle happens & you find some 5ba hex socket grub screws.

Is it possible to use 4mm ?

I have an AJAX MD20 which I believe is the same mill. It has had a lot of use but I have never experienced that problem. Just been out to the work shop and set up a cut as per your post and looked for any play/movement and could find none. I even used a small pry bar between the head casting and quill but still no movement. The Ajax has a plate on the front of the head casting which can be removed to adjust the spindle backlash. I wonder if it is the tool holding that is the problem and not the machine as once the quill is locked there should be no movement possible.

These may be able to sort you out. Polymax They sell by the metre. You can then make any size you want.

Had my email addy on many sites including P2P forums and not had any problems. I could count the "bad" emails on one hand that made it through my spam filters in the last few of years. It makes me wonder why anyone would open a link from someone they do not know or were not expecting to contact them Just follow the standard advise that is all over the web on email use. I concur with Frances IoM above.

Congrats on the new lathe.

A DRO is nice but not really as essential as it is on a mill. I would spend the money on some really good tools before a DRO. ie Collet holder + collets, a decent tool holder & tooling, dial test indicator, the list goes on & on.

That looks like a project waiting to happen in one form or another.

Go for a good Bullfinch torch. A bit pricey but they get the job done. Check out Rob on YouTube. He posts under the name Xyndu. He has many video's on brazing with the Bullfinch.

How about using plaster of paris ? I have used it on ceramic statues and works well. Not sure how good on plastic.. Maybe use an etch primer first to help it adhere.

The wife & I had a great day at the show today. Arrived just after 10am and walked straight up to the pay window no waiting at all. Toured all the models as usual. The variety was as good as ever with some new items not seen before. Had a good chat with some friends from the MSRVS and the chap demo'ing the 3D printing. Now the wife wants one so we can print some new keys to replace those odd ones missing from our vintage calculators.. The wife enjoyed a chat with the lovely lady doing some beautiful lace work whose husband was manning the Southern Federation of Model Engineering Societies stand. I always enjoy chatting to exhibitors about their displays.

Getting the egg & bacon baps and a seat was a breeze at 12 o'clock. I always enjoy the baps as they do not scrimp on the fillings unlike a lot of places.

Walked through the wet field (nothing changed there then   and enjoyed the live steam and demo's.

About 2 pm we started the walk around the trade stalls. A good variety as always some new and some not present this year but a good variety as usual. I allowed the wife to get me a few Xmas gifts as always. I reciprocated with a couple of items for her as well.

All in all an excellent day out. Looking forward to next time.
