Well spotted Martin. I missed that. I have sent a copy of the image to my FIL who is a Prof of Mathmatics maybe he has seen something like it. regards |

It appears to be a calculator that can be used to add fractions together. Also seems to be in 1/64th increments. I have a huge collection of calculators & sliderules but this one has escaped me. envious regards Edited By Oldiron on 12/03/2021 11:21:05 |
Thread: Sending Unpleasant Personal Messages |

I have never had that happen to me on this forum. I cannot see how attacking someone for their views can help any thing. I did get some really vile messages on the old Boxford forum when I suggested a few changes I thought might help improve some aspects of it. Some on my email which could only have been revealed by the mods. Soon left there and never went back. regards |

Once it gets a bit dodgey mark the bad edge with Tippex and turn it round. Of course you could be OCD like my brother and make up a spread sheet with hours run etc for each tool/tip. regards |

Thread: Record drive centre poor quality? |
11/03/2021 13:52:30 |
When I had a wood lathe many years ago I always fouind the 4 prong centre to be very inferior to a 2 prong or a serrated ring type centre. Always difficult to get a 4 prong to bite unless you bandsawed a cross into the end of the block. I much prefered the centre and 2 sharp outer pins to all the others.

So who is Lyle Peterson (Tubal Cain)? He is an American retired metalworking teacher. I think his later videos dropped the Tubal Cain name after complaints. Whilst the name is Biblical, Tom Walshaw used it for 50 years and although it was disrespectful of Tom, I don´t think he was aware of him. mrpete still uses the monica Tubalcain ( no space between ) It is in every title of his video's. regards |

Well, as a bus-pass age bloke in a shed, I use computers now, having been introduced to them at work at the ending of MS DOS and the start of WIN 3. When I retired the organisation was on WIN 7 Pro. I can remember way back using Gem desktop UI on I think an Amstrad IBM compatible machine. If I had a really good search through my old floppy's I might still have a copy. Or maybe I copied it to a cd when I was compacting my software library. regards |
Thread: mitre saw use for roughing out/ vertical milling mild steel? |
08/03/2021 12:12:08 |
Posted by jon hill 3 on 05/03/2021 14:50:59:
I guess this is one of those questions that will have some screwing up there face at the thought of such a suggestion but here goes: As I have a hobby grade milling machine which would struggle to cut say even a 4mm grove in mild steel, could a wood mitre saw be used for 'rough' horizontal milling with suitable metal blades and perhaps a taylor made clamp? I am just thinking out load and wondering if this is a practical shortcut? Most if not all "hobby" machines should be able to cut a 4mm groove in M/S. My little Chester Conquest will cut 10mm wide by 2mm deep in one pass with out struggling. A lot more if I take it easy. It all depends on diameter/RPM/speed (FPM)/depth of cut & sharpnes of cutter. If you are having trouble at 4mm diameter maybe if you tell us in what and how you are trying to make a slot we may have some tips for you. regards |

IMHO. Just clean it up and replace any dodgey bolts etc. Replace the cable ties for nice shiny new ones and sell it on. Anybody looking for a second hand wheel will want it cheap so will not be willing to pay the price for a shiny new VFD & motor. regards |

For anyone missing the model engineering shows here are a pair of videos of an American show. It took me 2.5 hours to get through the first one as I kept pausing the video to get a better look of what was on show. The second one I will watch in a few days when the fancy takes me. enjoy. regards

Visit you local weight lifting gym - ask for 4 strong men, 2 x strong timbers + straps and carry it up there. You can be the "Banksman". Those 4 men are probably very out of shape due to gyms being shut for the last few months. Also not able to help due to Covid restrictions.
