AH yes this is the guy (sv seeker) who staged a massive gas explosion on his boat and made out that he been badly injured. He lost a lot of subscribers after that.

Sievert probably still stock spares for that gun Gary.

Are we banned from saying AMAZON & EBAY. ???????

As far as I recall we are allowed to mention these two huge companies in this forum. Why do ppl faff around when it is easier to type the actual name than think of a pseudonim ?

Thread: Feed speed
05/11/2021 12:32:08

I find it very amusing to see how many facing cuts some "machinists" make when starting a job in the lathe. Why wear out your tools doing something that is totally unnesassary ? Unless the end of the bar is just faced and not drilled/bored etc I take a little as possible from the face. I only face the end of the work piece before drilling if it is really rough and then only the centre of the bar. I spot drill/drill/bore etc first then just face/chamfer off the required flat surfaces. Saves time energy & tooling.

Thread: Music on TV Programmes.
05/11/2021 12:04:12

The music over any speech is really annoying. I find it difficult to differentiate between the two when the music is loud. I never watch tv unless it is a wildlife documentary or F1 these days. What I really find annoying are the Youtube creators who think we need music over everthing especially engineering/modelmaking videos. STOP IT. I/we dont want hear your taste in music.

According to a friend who lives in Ca even some foodstuffs have that cancer warning on them. Looks like the Ca lawmakers are covering their axses.

Thread: Anyone updated to Windows11 yet ?

Nick,

The option may be there, but I do feel that any software author who decided to charge for their (Linux based) software would end up cutting their own throat, so to speak. One of the attractions of Linux is the number of different versions, and should the authors of my favourite distro, Linux Mint, try it on, then I for one would immediately go elsewhere. Indeed, although I don't know what the current situation is, there has been an attempt by Canonical, whose software Mint is based on, to force users to use a locked down software system. However, Clement LeFevre, the, I suppose you could say, controlling author of Mint, has said that Mint is absolutely NOT going down that road. I'm sorry, I don't know the correct terms for what I am saying, you may know better, but it is sufficient for me that LeFevre has said no. What will untimately happen I know not, but as I use the Mate version of Mint, perhaps I may have to go over to Debian.

Removing the software from the public domain is indeed a problem. I mention in my first post that I was using a DOS based database. In order to run this programme under Linux Mint v. 19.x, I am currently using DOSEmu, an emulator which has not been updated since 2013 (I think). Effectively it is Abandonware, yet it is still downloadable and works satisfactorily on all versions of Mint from v.13 to v19. Unfortunately, it is not downloadable in a ready-to-run format for Mint 20+, although I am given to understand that it may work if specifically compiled by the v. 20 user. That, I'm sorry to say, is currently above my paygrade!

Peter G. Shaw

Mint does indeed charge for business & enterprise use as do several other distros including Redhat etc. The Mint 20+ release installs at a screen resolution of 2560×1600 which is a problem on some smaller /older monitors.. The free versions are just basic with no support if your system goes tixs up and as said can be withdrawn at any time. . I use Mint "trying to evaluate it to replace Windows" on one of my PC's and feel that it is still lacking in ease of use and Apps compared to Windows. Also some of my input devices will not run out of the box as they do in Windows so could be a problem. I will persevere with it for a while and maybe try another distro.

I would be really miffed is someone was stopped from linking to one of my British made items on Ebay if they thought it would help out others on the forum. I do not think there is an overall ban on links to Ebay items (or is there) Only links to far eastern items, items that encroach on sponsers territory or items that may not conform to EU/UK standards are banned as far as I know. But I stand to be corrected if I am wrong.

Thread: pdf's increasingly flagged as 'dangerous'
26/10/2021 17:54:58

I use FF and get the occasional warning. I download the PDF's as they are all scanned by Malwarebytes and Windows Security Essentials. All so far have been clean. I realise that there could be a threat with http so only download from known sources when I can. FF gives warnings on quite a few sites these days especially if you are looking for drivers or free software. I downloaded a BIOS update last week and got a warning that the site was potentialy dangerous. The site was Asus, com which is one of the leading OEM pc parts manufacturers. It pays to be mindfull at all times.

M10 x 1 is also the thread on the height adjustment for many QCTP tool holders. When I made several new ones I ordered some 10 x 1 electrical nipple 65mm long. It was a godsend not having to thread them all and cut to length from threaded bar. Another aside is that it is virtually the same size as 1/8" BSP so very handy if you do not have the BSP tap.

Hi Ches. Welcome to the forum. Plenty of answers to any questions you may have in the forum. You can search specifics and get at least some background info into buying machines, trouble shooting or making models and other parts.

Where do you hail from & what areas are you interested in ? regards

I assume that the member is an innocent victim of the scammer? He or she needs to change their email address

Password for that email should be changed & made stronger.

I got this last night :-

Sign-in attempt was blocked
[email protected]
Someone just used your password to try to sign in to your account from a non-Google app. Google blocked them, but you should check what happened. Review your account activity to make sure that no one else has access.
You can also see security activity at

Probably an access attemt via one of the many bots that are used across the web to find passwords. Updated my password post haste. No need to change the email address according to my provider.

Thread: ME magazines and early bound volumes

I would love to have them Mick but they should probably go to someone a bit younger than me. The other option is to donate them to a local ME club or similar.

Maybe my bump of the thread will garner more interest.

Hi Subscribers

I am a newcomer and would like someone to tell me, as a digital subscriber to what that gives me access I have been able to look at model engineer for some of the current magazines but if I try to look at any prior to my recent subscription they do not display. and I simply get a blank screen. I thought I would be able to access previous volumes? Is my subscription limited to the current volumes and if it allows access to previous volumes why does my subscription show blank pages.

I seem also unable to print out any articles which interest me as some articles do not and I would like to store articles of interest. Do I need a different subscription to be able to do this.

Is there a comprehensive set of user instructions as it is not immediately evident how to perform some actions which may be possible

Hi Fred. It is always best to start a new thread if you have a specific question to seperate it from the existing thread you have latched onto. Hopefully some one will come along to help you.

Thread: photos

Looks to be in quite good nick Alan. They can be a real pain to strip, clean & reassemble. Mostly pressed steel parts assembled by hand.

In my album there are photos of part of my collection which we drag around the country showing them off at steam fairs etc.

SOD. An Enigma machine is basically a typewriter that swops letters in a seemingly random way ( depends on which set of wheels are fitted) and not a mechanical calculator. We are forever putting people right when they pass by and shout "Ooh look typewriters" even though we have a sign saying "Mechanical Calculators"

I had a large batch of A4 photographic paper disappear into their system between here & Brighton. I had to refund the buyer. After many many emails etc etc over a couple of months I just gave up. Never got the paper (5Kg) back or the supposed compensation that was due.

@Samsaranda. Amazon use them in my area also. Wife had (supposedly) 2 small parcels delivered through the door last week. Only 1 was on the mat. After a call to Amazon the other one arrived 5 days later. ??
