Thread: Milling machine questions
17/10/2017 19:53:56

I decided a while back Mick B1 that I was not going to rely on being able to do the necessary milling on my old Myford ML4. I don't think it is rigid enough in the right places and the overwhelming advice has been don't do it

Thanks Jason. The Major Beam is quite a big model ( to me anyway) and I can live with that limitation I think. Didn't realise arc didn't do shows but Im sure I can get some good initial experience looking at similar offerings by others

I want to be able to make the sort of models that Stuarts provide kits for. I am narrowing down the choice of milling machine and just querying the range of bed travel I am likely to need to be able to manage this sort of work. I have my eye on the Sieg SX3 but would go smaller if I could still manage that sort of work. The SX3 has 145mm of cross travel and 360mm longitudal travel. Will be trying to get some 'hands on' at the show on Saturday and hoping arceurotrade will be there

Thread: Broken tap in expensive unit!
13/09/2017 17:11:32

For what it is worth I n the distant past I used a stick welder to splash the stick onto the broken end of the tap then used a pair of grips to gently twist it out. Required several 'dabs' and twists. Ok if tap hasn't broken off to deep,

Thread: Offshore wind now cheaper than Nucular

Have to disagree Nick_G, I love the sight of wind turbines and would happily have one in my garden smiley

Thread: EU are to ban certain re-loading powders forthwith.
09/09/2017 18:44:26

Interesting to see this thread as before our handguns were taken from us I used to load all my own 9mm, .38 and .357 ammunition and had standardised on Red and Blue Dot powders. Hand made ammunition was far superior to 'factory' loads especially when attention was made to selecting, weighing and sizing the lead for target loads. Manufacture of target ammunition was more than half the fun in shooting for me

Thread: Stub Mandrel's drill upgrades
08/09/2017 18:04:43

Thanks guys. I have heard of the sticky pin technique and will try it when I get my drill back into the new workshop. The rest was just musings on possibilities, discussion points if you will 😀

08/09/2017 07:03:44

I read with interest the article in MEW 259 about upgrades to a pillar drill, in particular the attachment of laser cross hairs to indicate drill position. The point is made that the crossing point "probably isn't fine enough to use on milling machines". Having no experience with milling machines I'm not sure how much finer the lines would need to be but wonder if there is scope to attach small lenses to the laser housings to give finer focus (and maybe collimation) of the beam at the distance required and thus improve the fineness of the crossing point.

An obvious downside to this would be the likely need to refocus at every change of distance (though collimation, if possible, might reduce this problem) with any inherent inaccuracies in the position of the crossing point that may be introduced.

I'm sure there are people out there that can add some more 'engineered' thinking to this idea 😀

Thread: MEW 259 Transwave article missing a diagram
07/09/2017 10:08:34

Thanks Thor. With the excellent level of detail (and humour) in the article I was expecting something more like a connection diagram rather than a function list. I guess more becomes obvious once you get the cover off at both ends smiley

07/09/2017 08:30:23

The article on installing a Variable Speed Inverter appears to be missing a diagram/photo. 3/4 of the way down column 1, page 15 there is a reference:

"Connect the seven wires from the remote and the earth screen as shown below." followed by a line space where I guess the diagram is supposed to be.

Thread: Centec2 knee adjustment
03/09/2017 20:54:20

I dont know the centec but it looks as if the bed height is adjusted with those two adjusters bearing on that lug on the left? Could you use your acme threaded bar centrally under the bed in some sort of jack configuration and bearing on the base of the bed somewhere up between those two webs?

No worries Neil, see my latest pm mate

I'm multiplying inches by 25.4 Andrew 😀

Out of interest a Google search  "convert inches to millimetres" gets the same results whichever of the two spellings I use.

Thread: Horizontal engine
02/09/2017 18:54:21

JasonB: Thank you for the extra photos and the video, very nice. I have plans for Stewart's Pottymill now and planning on making a start on that once we get moved and the new workshop sorted out

JasonB: Do you have any more pictures of that engine please, I am interested to see the 'gubbins' on the other side where the reciprocating takes place

Thread: Runout in spindle face plane

Congratulations Charles, excellent response from Warco specially as I am thinking about one of their milling machines. Could be the difference between a Warco WM18 and a Sieg SX3.
