Thread: Another EVRI calamity. |

EVRI (Hermes) must be the worst delivery company out there. They've managed to 'misplace' 3 of my orders so far. Contacted the supplier of my last order and they sent a replacement via DPD which arrived next day. Have told the supplier if they continue to send via EVRI I will order from elsewhere. |
Thread: Bench lathe |

Thanks for that Howard. Had a digital mic passed to me from B in Law and certainly helps. As to calipers they all seem to have what I would call a thumb wheel to advacne the jaw not a screw adjuster. Had the Aldi type like that in the past and didn't find them very good. Does anyone know of digital alipers that have screw adjusters?

Probably the wrong topic but couldn't find one to suit so picked this. Recently put a wanted add up looking for a Bench lathe. Sight damaged after syroke and stupidly as it turns out sold all y gear. So sitting in the lounge with nothing to do going doolally, not feeling good so get a lathe and you could do some rough turning, precision is out as difficult trying to read a mic/vernier etc. Well I've had a fabulous weekend thanks to very very kind and generous fellow model engineer as I'm now the proud owner of an low mileage Asian lathe. Just shows what a supportive bunch of people are who use tools to actually make things. You know who you are, I can only say a heartfelt thank you, think I might have a few more winters in me now. |

Thread: er25 collet |
13/08/2021 18:12:06 |
What I'm machining is the cylinder liner for an Owen Mate i/c engine, there are 4 transfer ports at 90 deg to each other. How I approached it was to put a length x 1 1/2" dia. of EN3 (from the scrap box) into the 3 jaw chuck and turn a 1/2" long spigot 16mm dia (using tipped tool) Switch the 3 jaw to a collet chuck, spigot into that and turn a diameter to enable marking out for the 4 ports when it's then transferred into the Stevenson's square fixture using the same 16mm dia collet. That's when the accuracy went. So I've now set the EN3 up in a 4 jaw chuck and machined the spigot tp 7/8" long (thats as long as I could go and still get the finished length I needed), tried in lathe collet chuck and and it's running true so as you've advised got to approach using er collets differently to my 'ordinary' morse 2 taper collets. Thanks for all your input. GW |

Never been really satisfied in the interchangeability Accuracy) between ER25 lathe chuck and my ER25 Stevenson's square. I usually turn a 1/2" long spigot on whatever I want to machine to fit say my 16mm collet. 1/2" long only so as not to waste to much very expensive metal. I'm beginning to wonder after this mornings episode that the spigot should be at or near collet length, does anyone have any advice on this? Cheers GW |

Well I think it's been mentioned on occasions before but was moved to post again. Ordered at 1400hrs Friday, post just delivered at 1200 hrs Saturday. Exceptional service by the PO and especially ArcEuro. Well done. GW |
Thread: Ternplate |

Memory not so good these days but back in the 60s I'm sure we used Terneplate to press Timing Gear Covers for David Brown Tractors, 2 types, Grey in colour, can't remember the gauge exactly but around 18/20 swg EDD sourced from a plant in North Wales in 20 ton minimum lots. |
Thread: Boll Aero |
16/12/2020 13:41:37 |
Hello Tug, did make a pair of Holly Buddys, one beam mount and one radial as per plan, got those running no trouble, quite taken with them as engines but now more focussed on my bikes for the moment, might go back to the Boll Aero at some point. Did read the link and it's somewhat surprising that many of us have trouble with a simple side port engine. Did experiment with the nva and choke size after some advice from Dynosaw but to no avail. Regards Graham W.

Hello Keith. Sort of lol. Got it to run once only a fuel tank full of fuel after flicking away for what seemed like hours, let it cool down then tried it again and couldn't get a squeak out of it. Walked away to have a think about it but got side-tracked with one of my Velocette motorbikes, Think the piston fit is still not good enough though I have made 3 pistons now, Will have another go when the mood takes me, haven't had this much trouble with any of the other engines I've made or refurbed. You haven't posted in a while have you, what you up to now? Graham Edited By Graham Williams 11 on 16/12/2020 12:54:24 Edited By Graham Williams 11 on 16/12/2020 12:55:05 |
Thread: Ally bike cranks |
17/09/2020 05:58:42 |
The crank arms that are on offer are off £800 + bikes that have been pounded round the lakes, step son lives there, but seems that there might be a risk. Think I'll try one in one of the rough looking AM25s I have and see if it holds up as a failure might not be to hard to take. Thanks for all your input. G |

What's the general view on using Ally bike crank arms off mountain bikes to make con rods in model 'diesel' engines replacing HE 15 ? |
Thread: Machin Myford quick change gearbox kit from Hemingway Kits. |
24/08/2020 06:29:50 |
Built a version for my ML7 a few years back after an article appeared in one of the magazines detailing the build of one, bloke named Paine if my memory serves me right. Cut all the gears as well. Few fiddly bits but it's been a really useful bit of kit. The only thing I would say with making the Alum jigs you'll need, not supplied by Hemingway at the time and getting the front info plate made, it didn't work out as much as a saving over buying a Myford box as I hoped. Good project though |

Didn't see that when I searched Tracy Tools site, looks like it would do what I need, thanks for that Neil. Can't get 19tpi on my lathe so not an option Hopper. Cheers GW |
09/06/2020 15:43:09 |
Thanks guys. It's the connection to the carburettor feed, definitely 19TPI, he wants to use the original tap for authenticity's sake ????? also the thread that screws into the tank looks to be 3/8" BSP. If he'd go with the 1/4" outlet it would be easy enough to make an adapter to suit the tank but the readily available ones look quite different to this one. Tried Draganfly but they say they buy the taps in and wasn't forthcoming on the supplier, probably someone in the far east. Tracy tools has no knowledge of 3/16 BSP nor do Wisemans so Michael's suggestion might well be the reason, there's no mention of the size in any of the Machinery handbooks I have or on the web. A puzzle, it sounds like he's gonna have to compromise. Cheers Graham W |

Have been asked to look at an old Ewarts motorbike petrol tap. Thread is 19tpi and dimension over the threads is 0.430" Owner says it's 3/16" BSP, it's smaller than the common 1/4" BSP but can't find any reference to such a size. Can anyone throw any light on either confirming such a size existed and if yes all dimensions, or possibility it might be known as something else. Cheers Graham W |
Thread: ER25 closing nuts |
02/03/2020 19:01:46 |
Bought the set complete and spare nuts from my favorite Leicesteshirer supplier a few years back and haven't been disappointed with anything they've supplied me. Recently bought a 16mm collet Swiss made (Sets seem to go to 15mm max) but have the same variability with that. Always make the stub at around 3/4" long so not overly short I would have thought. Perhaps the point that Jason is making about tightening is worth looking at as I try to get them as tight as I can. Graham W |
