Thread: Warco WM280V Metric or Imperial
20/03/2017 23:01:33

Ok so 31" or thereabouts should do. Will sketch something and get going with it...

Cheers for that Jason and Dave. Glad I asked as there were a bunch of things I didn't think of. When it comes to lifting (having no one to help me apart from my wife and 9 month daughter) I'll use a chain block. I'm building the bench myself with caster wheels so I can position the bench under the lathe rather than the otherway round. Should still work; while on the subject what's the recommended height for the bench? I'm 5ft9", was thinking of a bench 32" high, does it sound right? The Warco stand seems to be a bit short...

Most likely if I need to turn a thread it will be imperial but it should be one offs. In the meantime been in contact with warco and although they didn't explain why the discount on the imperial lathe they confirmed its the same version like the metric with VFD etc. They also confirmed they do test run the machines and check them before dispatch particularly those for export; which will be my case. So probably I'll place the order as soon as I get confirmation from my shipper.

Any ideas regarding what tools should I get along to get started?

Thanks Dave, so the 280 will come with change gears covering both metric and imperial and I won't need to order any, right?  will check with them, at least to comfirm it is identical to the metric version ie its got VFD no DC motor drive.

Any recommendations on what tooling should I get for starters

Hello, I'm about order a milling and lathe from Warco and while checking the specs on their online shop noticed the WM280 lathe with imperial leadscrew is discounted £445 over the metric, any particular reason for that?

I'm used to both metric and imperial (but would prefer metric) but I was anyway planning to install DROs, so my thoughts were get it imperial and with what I save I can get the DRO but will have to be quick about it as there's a note saying "Almost sold out!"

When it comes to thread cutting, is the WM280 able to cut both metric and imperial threads?

Thread: Warco WM18 has arrived

Thanks for that, it will do for now. I only need to get an idea of where the holes are so I can some up with a design for the stand ( I'm doing a combined bench for the WM18 and WM280). I'll pick the exact hole positions when I have the machinery delivered.

Thanks again and sorry for the hijack wink

Following this thread with interest, I'm after a WM18 and from what I gathered I think I'll go for it. Would you mind if I asked you to measure the base attachment holes for me, diameter and distance apart? As I'll be shipping it and a lathe abroad I'm thinking of making the stands myself.

Hello and welcome Alan.

My experience from asking for quotes from local suppliers and checking UK online shops :- you'll get more for what you pay from the likes of Warco etc.

Thanks Neil, you're right, small island but lots of enthusiasts!

Hi George, precisely my thoughts as the machines look too similar!

Think that the first thing I should do is to list all necessary tooling I will be needing to start with, otherwise I'm blowing the budget with just the lathe and milling.

Hello Vincent, good to know there's a fellow co-national on here!

Yep I know the shop, I had asked for a quote for a lathe similar to this:

but without the milling attachment and he asked for 3800Euro, too much I think when for 2900Euro I can get a warco WM280v

Hi Alan,

Yes it is, this is the right time to place an order as long as the rates stay the same. Shipping is relatively easy as there's quite a lot of transport companies which do the UK - Malta route shipping all sorts of things.

Should not cost more than 250euro to ship a lathe and a milling on two separate pallets.

Hi,

I'm Chris from Malta - found this forum by chance while looking for information on hobby lathes and mills which at some point I intend to buy. At the moment it's works in progress building a workshop at the rear of my garage.

I got basic knowledge in turning but still consider myself a beginner, and although back in my younger days at school one of the subjects was turning on the lathe it was all basic. Never used the milling but I got an idea of how it works.

Locally there's not much to choose from and machinery is typically expensive, so I was looking at shops from the UK or EU to buy from. I'm more inclined to Warco more that to any other shop as I've seen mostly positive reviews on their equipment. I believe a local shop has what looks like very similar machines but under a different brand (Weiss I think).

I'm thinking a good sized lathe and milling would be a WM280v lathe and a WM18 Milling. Any suggestions regarding basic tooling required to start with are welcome.

Cheers

Chris
