Thanks jason am clear now with what to do ,so will make a new brass boiler, and if it was made when new with soft solder then l will use that as well, but will test it to its double working pressure. |

Well have just had a look at it and it seems that the boiler was made in brass in the first place, would think the meths fuel would run out before the boiler ran out of water, and would think that it will not have a lot of use,but will se if what more posts will bring ,as for repairing the dents ,no go its bad ,can get dents out of most things but not this time. |

Hi all was given a mamod steam engine to se if l could repair it as the boiler has had a big dent in it ,now am happy to replace the boiler tube ,but the only thing is all l have is of the right size is thick walled seamless brass tube, will that be ok to use ,what is the experts opinion please. |

Many thanks for your help ,being honest it would have nice to get a back plate etc already made, and not keep hiding under the stairs when it comes to screw cutting ,but my mentor friend and his side kick have given me the push to do it , and l do have a chuck that fits the lathe ,so will make a dummy spindle and take good measurements from the spindle when its on the bench and go for it . john |

Thanks for that lathe link ,it looks like l have got a 6" IXL AKT gap bed lathe ,but could not se on the site about the spindle thread size, yes do get the thread an register side buit 1 3/8 " is really loose . john |

Has any one come across a lathe with a 1 27/64" x 8tpi thread on the spindle its on a very old IXl lathe , l did think it was 1 3/8" but trying that size its to loose,be nice to have a new chuck for it when the old girl is restored. john |

Well it seems steve was on the money the bushing is well worn ,and putting in the screw in to the nut there seems not to be any lash on that ,but did find the nut was loose as well ,so that was not helping matters,so will re bush the housing and go from there ,well l am at it will re bush the carrage handle. john |
31/01/2021 08:45:45 |
Will have a better look later at the bushing steve and se if it could be that good point john |

Hi all , with regard to the ml7 cross slide nut mine is showing signs of in need of a new one ,but it seem imperial ones are out of stock apart from the super 7 and l take it they would not fit ,now has anyone made one before ,yes l know l would have to buy a tap when l no what the thread size is,or do l wait untill they are back in stock ?,will be led by you experts. john |
Thread: Chuck |

Update on chuck ,fitted it to the myford back pate ,and very pleased should be very handy for light work ,squared off some 75mm x 73mm thick walled box section and was great, another string for the myford use plus its cheaper to run than the big southbend so thanks nick for your idea. john |
24/01/2021 17:04:27 |
Thanks Nick good info ,yes would not use it for heavy or long work if l ever did then would use a centre with it but would think twice before l did , so thanks john |

Very good thinking old mart, yes indeed it would be worth while ,plus it also becomes a small face plate, how comes a little turning job always turns in to yet another project ? john |
24/01/2021 16:23:55 |
As a rule old mart l would do that ,l do have a small 4 jaw chuck for the myford, but as l was given this one plus l have a couple myford backplates just gathering dust for a bit of turning and being a bit bigger thought it would be handy for the odd job. john |
24/01/2021 16:12:15 |
Well looking at it now , it should be a simple job to fit a myford backplate ,just a section between the chuck an backplate so a good register can be turned can then hold it in place with a 3/4" unf stud with a bit of loctite as the register keeps it true, well thats my thinking. john |
24/01/2021 11:27:40 |
Hi derek yes thats the chuck,so think will take your advice and indeed convert to fit the myford for the odd use . john |

Right machine mart sell the same looking chuck for there range of wood lathes so you can se the jaws ,am not that great with the computor to put up a picture, hope this helps |
24/01/2021 10:41:20 |
Morning howard , the jaws are reversible but you have to have a gap at the back as the jaws have nuts as well as well sa go in and out with the key so no back plate as sort ,a dummy spindle coming off a back plate would be needed then it could be mounted to a myford plate ,hope that makes sence john |
