Is this ok? It's the support for the shaft at the back of the vice, if not, as it's steel, it would be ok to mig weld to increase the thickeness and redrill the hole? |

AJAX, Nice one, how did you restore it to it's current state, wire wheel? Do you plan to make jaws for it to use? Roger |

My previous post I think got lost. I was pointing out that wartime equipment was often unpainted or blackened to save paint for the war effort. I think you could be right as there seems to be no sign of paint but it's not that rusty, what I thought was heavy corrosion could well be an as cast finish! |

More photos of my vice:- The removable jaws are seized up and have been dosed with penetrating oil in an effort to remove them, watch this space |

Finding it difficult to get the history of the company but found this narrative on the VICES of Garage journal:- Then there's these Fortis ones, which as far as I can see are the same as some of the Record vice's Fortis Engineering Coof Norfolk Street, Coventry, and of 91 Station Street, Birmingham Manufacturers of engineers vices. Established 1900. Seems to have kept going on into the 1960's |

Hi Dave, you're right, Coventry it is. If I can't find the correct colour I might go with what I've got - Denham grey or Record blue |

If it's the same shade they used a few years ago the RAL number is 6011 and it's called Reseda green , the same colour was used on quite a few makes of machine including Boxford lathes, Condor mills, quite easily available. I've always used semi gloss for repainting and touching in machinery, seems easier to blend in, gloss seems to stand out too much. The Paragon I bought was a very good match, but obviously there may be slight colour differences between machine batches. Dave Edited By Dave Wootton on 05/06/2022 13:26:20 Smith and Allen do RAL 6011 in enamel, both in aerosols & tins, 1 & 5 ltr. I used them for the primer, undercoat & top coat for my Denham Junior lathe and found the paint to be very good and chip resistant. My twopennith worth as a customer Roger |

Mine's the same as Nigels, been running it in a 5mtr x 7mtr workshop with 4" insulation in the roof and 2" in the walls. I've had it for 3 years now, I start it about a hour before I go into the shop to take the chill off, so far I've bought 150 litres of kerosene @ less than 50p per ltr and reckon I've got enough to last through the next winter plus. The bonus with these heaters is that it circulates the air in the shop so doesn't introduce cold damp air from outside. Never had an issue with it. I have the Vevor DROs on my mill, they work fine and even have 2 layers of silicon dust strip where other more expensive ones have one. Plenty of youtube vids on how to cut them. Paul, just google Vevor,as I don't think admin will allow that link. Mike, they're glass but you can cut magnetic as well. Roger Edited By Rockingdodge on 10/04/2022 11:17:33 |
