Electronics and SW engineer but interested in becoming familiar with basic machining. Would like to get a small mill maybe, CNC for my home projects some day. Looks like a friendly place!

I'm currently building the MPCNC from **LINK** It's a resizable cnc router type m/c that uses NEMA 17's , steel tubing and 3d printed parts to create a work platform for 3d printing, milling ally and steel, laser work et al.

It would not be a replacement for my small mill but it will give me an alternative and also the skills for cnc'ing my mill.

Hi Emile, welcome, the natives are ok mostly, not eaten a newbie lately.

What are you thinking of building?

Sean, another possible source for help is bigclivedotcom, he has excellent reverse engineering skills and could be willing to help with your board. His email address is [email protected]

What would you suggest , I wouldn't know where or what to look for ,more so not knowing what to look for .

This one from Banggood is what I bought - AC90V-260V Input DC110V Output 8A PWM DC Motor Speed Controller Driver Speed Governor. Currently at £42

**LINK**

search on youtube for "treadmill motor conversion", that will keep you occupied for a bit. What ever you do don't dump it as they are a very popular motor.

So I can't use what's in the photos ?

Without seeing the rest of the electrics as they were it's difficult to say yay or nay.

Normally there would be a display board which sits between the 2 handles and has a failsafe key and then one or two boards down the front. if there were two boards and you have the correct one it could work, if there was only one board then you probably need the display as well.

It would be worth trawling through youtube videos on treadmill motors as they are popular for converting to 1 x 72" belt grinders.

29/12/2018 18:48:14

These treadmills often need the display board to function properly, at the very least there will be a speed sensor that needs to be triggered to allow the power to be applied, no rotation sensed, no go.

The power supplies I mentioned have a speed pot on them so that they will vary the speed.

250v DC sounds like fun

It won't be 250 vdc it'll be circa 110 vdc as it's half wave.

You can get power supplies from Banggood and other reputable chinesium suppliers.

Thread: Win 10 updates (again)
31/10/2018 17:40:22

Well said Dave, what all of you need to remember is that Windows 10 and it's predecessors are targeted at the commercial market firstly and then the public market.

Hackers are working 24/7 to get ways in to access data and some of the updates are there to protect the user and their data.

You will be the first ones to shout murder if you had your personal details lifted and sold to the highest bidder to use for whatever. but if you refuse to accept updates who then is responsible?

Don't forget MS Windows is not the only operating system under attack, Apple OS, Android, Linux and all its versions even down to Rasbian and its flavours, if it's connected to the internet it is open to attack.

Roger

30/10/2018 10:13:46

Danny, I assume, as your data/video is fully backed up? Ha of course it is, silly question. blush

Windows 10 is meant to be the last issue of Windows so updates are the method of continuous improvement and securing against attacks into the operating system that 'security scanners' only pick up after their virus database has been updated and downloaded, But there are methods into the operating system that the scanners will see as 'legit'

Do the updates.

I dont know if I am looking in the wrong places but 12 volt traction batteries are expensive, or at least the ones I,ve seen are, didnt expect them to be those sort of prices.

Good news - batteries are a technical problem that's easily fixed. Bad news - the solution involves the owner having deep pockets.

Car batteries are cheap because there's a massive market for them. Regrettably being used for leisure or traction kills them in short order. A leisure battery is optimised for an entirely different charge / discharge cycle and they don't last long in a car.. Nor do they perform well as traction batteries. The right battery for each scenario performs better and will be cheaper in the long run.

Sod's Law being what it is, your loco needs the most expensive type available. Welcome to model engineering...

sad

Could look at a fuel motor or 2, maybe a scale diseisel one? wink

Thread: What did you do Today 2018

Do you really need 2 Hardinge lathes? Our shed has several chisels we can swap for one. laugh We were pleased to be given a second mallet. (wooden for hitting chisels with, not type of loco)

A bit of a story about these lathes Baz, they were built in '62/63 and installed in the Rank Xerox toolroom. with the demise of RX in the UK they were auctioned off and went into barn storage for about 6 years and then were offered to us on ongoing loan. They literally came as last used, swarf and all.!!

30/03/2018 22:01:08

Today I helped collect a Schaublin 12 mill for our new men's shed, going to be an interesting rebuild project!!!

That will then join our 2 Harbinge lathes, 1 imperial and one metric complete with collets, change wheels, oh just say fully equipped.

Never thought this kind of kit would be willingly donated, kind gobsmacked.
