I find it curious that drivers are subject to a series of NO NOS in respect of phones, alcohol etc but pedestrians are exempt. From above comments distracted pedestrians are just as likely to be the cause of an accident, but we,or they cannot enforce current legislation on motoring. I guess seizing a pushchair and child for non payment of an on the spot fine might seem harsh, but would certainly concentrate the mind. Not sure how 6 points and a ban would work!!!!!!!!!! |

Given that jaguar export motor vehicles worldwide, could it be that driving regulations else where are not as stringent as theUK??????? Our last three family cars had radios, CD players aux sockets and sun roofs none of which were ever used during ownership. These were necessary in order to obtain automatic transmission. Gimmicks or technical advancements? |
Thread: Drilling tiny holes. |
04/03/2017 15:01:00 |
Drill Services have supplied me with c/drills in sizes 0,1/0, 2/0 3/0, 4/0 ,the. 4/0 has a tip size of 10 thou, that's small enough to centre a drill to tap 16 BA! If your chuck has problems gripping 1mm , a 3/32 std shank drill may be an alternative, I have obtained these from Expo Tools in sizes down to o.5 MM. They are claimed to be to aDIN spec My experience suggests that a hole and half with a fair wind💨💨💨💨 |

Mr Moderator. We have exchanged emails on this subject Sid h et. al. My last sentence was to suggest that if an advt stated " 20 copies of MEW mint condition" why exactly would you need a photo. If you do not want copies why would you investigate the advt . In the first instance???? |

Adding a touch of old age. I remember my first introduction to an N17 jap big end reconstruction, which was of crowded roller design, there was always a nagging suspicion that an extra roller was required , with a forked rod V twin the feeling was in triplicate as each part went together. Happy days. |

If the only camera you own is a 120 roll film type, the help suggested by the moderator is not a solution. It may come as a shock to presumably to a younger generation that computer and mobile phones are not in universal ownership. I can only access this forum via equipment passed to me by my daughter with instruction minimal, and a lot of trial and error. If you don't know what a toolpost, book or item is why would you even look at the advt at all???????? |

Brian......there is a company called Alex Tiranti I think in Berkshire they specialise in mould rubber and cold casting materials mainly for the hobby trade.......might be a useful starting point. |

Thread: Lost wax casting advice needed |

The reason for making a mould is to allow an impression to be made this is injected with wax,the wax impresion is placed in a flask and covered with plaster. This method allows multiple items which are attached to a sprue with an ingrate to pour in the molten metal.with option B the pattern would be encased in plaster with ingate and the pattern would be lost due to the heat of the molten metal. If the cast results in a misshape you pattern will be lost. With option A if a misshape occurs you simply create wax impressions from the mould ad infinitum. The quality of the caster will be a key decision. |

Curious to know why you would was to use brass components on motor cycle. Having tinkered with a few bikes in my youth, brass was only used on petrol taps or copper pipe unions???? 'Gold' type metals such as bushes, bearings valve guides were usually of a bronze nature. Perhaps Roger could expand further. If the need is for a one off it may be simpler to produce a pattern or the component and find a lost wax caster. The cost of setting up the equipment, together with safety clothing and the possible consequences of injury require careful thought................... |

Dave et al.........this has moved us away from tweaking ic engines. My thoughts are that if we have moved from making adjustable machines to non adjustable machines over the last 70 years is this progress? On a personal thought I do not want fake medicines, legal highs, fake tyres, flammable children's clothing with fake EEC safety markings whether they come from China or Mars. But I do have thoughts on the labour conditions regardless of methods, and speed of production. The number of Far East visitors in major shopping centres perhaps there are niche markets that the UK can satisfy with quality items. Coming back to the thread............I have a copy of tuning for speed by phil Irving, it's yours for the asking.......... My tuning days have long passed. |

A further twist to this post, banisters were finished in this style of decoration in earlier times. I have a recollection of a woodworking article showing a lathe with a router mounted on the cross slide fitted with a milling cutter . Must have been created otherwise pre router! |

The concept that careful assembly leads to accuracy and efficient state of tune is confirmed when you consider that ancient Myfords are revered, whilst up to date cnc lathes from the Far East have to be upgraded and tweeked to get the best performance . Perhaps the desire to tune improve etc has moved from motor vehicles to mechanical eqpt?? |
Thread: Tramcars by Ashley Best in Model Engineer magazine |
30/01/2017 12:28:37 |
Remember as a 10 year old in 1940s getting 2 old pence getting a no 33 tram from Essex rd Islington, half fare took me to Big Ben reversal spot on the embankment, that included the plunge into the Queensway tunnel which emerged from under the newly constructed Waterloo Bridge, the bridge had to be finished with female labour as the males had been called up on war service!! A penny each way and home in time for Sunday roast. A curious feature of the journey was the separation of the tracks at Islington Green an old fellow in a vertical canvas coffin was responsible for diverting the service between Upper stand Essex rd. All gone by 1952 though the track remained visible for a few years. There was an interesting relic remaining from the horse drawn tram at the junction of St Pauls rd and Highbury Corner, a partly underground tram depot was converted into a 'Black cab' garage and part of the curved roadway which was used to reach the stables above was still visible in the mid 1960S when I left the area |

Richard..............a lathe of the size you want is somewhat smaller than those used by the majority of forum users. Most model making lathes will suffice for the level and accuracy you appear to need. My suggestion is that you obtain a hard catalogue from ARC or AXMINSTER POWER TOOLS who have the size of lathe you need. The latter company range includes finishing materials, adhesives etc etc which may be of use. I don't think the final choice is important beyond the limitations of space you have, the dimensions info will be in the cat, welcome to the world of engineering ...........don't forget to room for the scrap bin, a lot of us do not speak much about this!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Joking aside I am having sleepless nights regarding the speed of light . Is it a universal constant or would it be different on each planetary surface. My model is that the sun is like a cannon firing electro magnetic waves across the universe. My thoughts are that the initial burst of energy is at a higher speed than the trajectory which follows and the speed of the waves will slow over a distance as the energy dissipates to zero, this suggests that the speed of light is variable and that it will be no more than an average speed when calculated over a fixed distance. Is my thinking flawed??????? |
