Thread: Tapping M2 thread in plastic - which?

You can use stainless steel steel helicoil inserts and stainless steel screws which have been silver plated to prevent spalling. I have made parts for RR aerospace with this spec. The screws were silver plated to spec specified to prevent the similar materials picking up with no lubrication etc on assembly.

Thread: Fabricating and installing a 300 mm riser block
30/07/2022 09:22:09

I worked on a huge old flatbed lathe to turn recceses in gearbox covers for a Dosco heading mining machine. The plates were 5 feet long about 2 feet wide and 1/2 inch thick with three overlapping recesses in one side about a 1/4 inch deep The lathe had riser blocks about 18 inch too swing the plate the center recess was ok ish but the outer recesses were a bit hairy swinging a 5 foot plate in an offsett jig bolted to a faceplate like a large blade. There was a back guard with a small radial upstand but there was no front cover. At full swing it had a circumference of about 8 feet swing. I also had to make a sine table with a 3 feet square top and bottom plates 2 inch thick plates, to machine a door for a nuclear reactor made from 1 inch thick stainless steel plate fabrication hollow and filled with lead. It weighed about one and a half tonne.

Having worked similar machines it gives me a feeling of how small my little machines are, what I am missing, and what we used to do to to arrive at a finnished job.

Thread: 3"burrell
26/07/2022 17:09:29

Hi Peter I used to make steam generators for an industrial processes for bending wood. They were made by two plates with a pattern of holes with grooves like circlip grooves in the holes. The lengths of copper tube were expanded into the holes with a special tool like an expanding ream but with ball bearings instead of cutting blades. They were pressure tested to 20 bar on assembly with the case and end caps.

Thread: Myford Super 7 Tailstock assembly
26/07/2022 08:01:33

Hi Toby have you looked at the Myford web site. On there in the spares section is an exploded drawing of the parts and part numbers. I think something is out of place perhaps the old key has moved and is still in there but flat and behind or in front of the thrust bearing. I would think a complete strip down.

Hi Simon have a look on here.

It may be that you heat and shrink when cool rather than just press on.

Thread: Fixed steady advice
25/07/2022 21:00:54

Hi Dougie an easy way of setting up a fixed steady is to turn a short piece of scrap or spare material in chuck first. Then slide the fixed steady up to the chuck and adjust firstly the bottom two supports up to the spare bar with the base clamped to bed. Secondly close the top of the steady, clamp and adjust the top support. Lastly unclamp the top of the steady and remove the spare material from the chuck. You can unclamp the steady from the bed and slide it to required length reclamp the steady put in the job and close and clamp the top. It should be in the correct position but be careful about too much pressure and the bar heating and expanding if it does very slightly slacken the top support. Also put on oil and as Mark says use a piece card to keep swarf away from the supports.

Thread: Thread tip information
24/07/2022 16:38:59

Thanks for information it gives me more thoughts like I can use UN inserts for meteric and visa versa and as long as the root diamiter of a tip is not too big I can use that for other size and pitch.

Having just started using carbide tips for screw cutting ( I always used to make my own tools grind by hand. ) what tips do I need to buy ie do I need to buy a tip specific to thread dimensions or just get round it. I have only bought some 18 Whit tips so far but do I actually have to buy a tip for each thread size.

This video on you tube is me cutting a 0.100 pitch square thread in silver steel. The tool is tool steel hand ground on a solid piece of square not a part of blade.

Fairly easy to make a cutter from HSS. Just copy the shape of the thread form from the original on to a piece of tool steel and make sure there is cutting clearance on end and both sides but leave the top flat. Then just turn the blank to size and plunge the cutter in till correct depth 8 TPI.

Thread: Connecting battery charger fly leads
12/07/2022 21:17:54

I had an incident when I worked at a motorcycle workshop. I removed a new battery from a Honda 90 which had been sold and put it on charge. There was a large two voltage charger and selected the 6 volt pair and connected and switched it on. Another worker placed a spanner on the same bench which disconnected one of the crocodile clips and caused a spark. I could see a flame travel up the clear plastic tube connected to the battery vent and ran. The battery exploded spraying acid etc over the new bike and other stock. No one was hurt but only just.

Make a ring. Turn a piece of material of correct dimension and wrap apiece of tin strip or coper wire round to form shape. Then cut ends across square and solder together.
