Guys - thank you so much for all this info. I never even thought of using the tailstock to drill or centre it. That is a great idea. I think too you are right about the ply compressing- I will try removing it. You guys are the best. Thank you all. Christine |

Hi Dave Glad the car passed the MOT! The measurement you speak of was 72mm yes. I had to remove the chuck from the backplate and measure this exact part for Arc to decide which chuck was required

Hello everyone Pleased to say, it's solved! We made a call to Arc Eurotrade and within two minutes, a 4 jaw is on the way which will fit into the backplate off the 3 jaw as snug as a bug. Fantastic service. As ever, thank you everyone for your input and suggestions, and most of all, for your time to help me. It is very much appreciated. Best wishes Christine

Dave, these are the dimensions off the back of my 3 jaw mounting plate. http://s304.photobucket.com/user/christineanniewalker/media/chuck_zpsof6i3wkn.jpg.html?filters[user]=142907852&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=0

Hi Dave The URL for the measurement is above. Here it is again....
It measures 12.07mm across the four threads. But it was difficult to hold the camera and calliper. I would rather buy a backplate already drilled etc as I am not yet confident enough in my ability to do a proper job. Many thanks Christine |

Or this one perhaps? It appears to be a four hole mounting? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sharp-100-mm-4-Jaw-Independent-Lathe-Chuck-Plain-Recess-Mount-Brand-New-/371424772878?hash=item567aa4430e:m:mawtQOBDZafV04shVHtnqYA

Would this one work, do you think? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100mm-4-jaw-Independent-Lathe-Chuck/260926466506?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D38661%26meid%3D33b893d03cb244ffa136976caf647a47%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D370166009118 |

Hi Dave Thanks for the info and reply. Should I chose a 100mm 4 jaw independent chuck with a three (or four bolt mounting), would that then fit? Or is there more to it than that? This is the measurement between the threads, sorry it's difficult holding the camera and callipers still! http://s304.photobucket.com/user/christineanniewalker/media/IMG_3303_zpsc6c4fgcm.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0 Thanks Christine |

Hi Les - The problem is, I have the ply mounted to the faceplate with four bolts. Then, in the centre (or what I hoped was the centre!) is a M10 hole. Through this hole, an M10 bolt passes, which also passes through the workpiece in the centre (or again, what I hoped was the centre). There is no other way to hold the workplace than like this. It is too big for chuck jaws and dogs on the face plate. (It's about 10mm dia bigger than the faceplate). Therefore, somewhere in that centring hole I have done something slightly wrong, but checking and double checking, I can't see where. Hi Ajohnw - I have mounted it though the centre (as explained above). However, I didn't have the O ring at that point (awaiting delivery) so had to remove the work piece to do something else. I remounted it, but then found there is this difference when I am machining end on. I don't know why. I can't fathom it. Something, somewhere isn't centred. MikeE - It could be the ply. Because I have checked the workpiece all over and it is perfect according to my digital callipers. But then again, the ply appears to be too! Thanks all C

ps: I know I am a dumbo.... but could I not just take the 3 jaw chuck off the backplate it has? But then I guess I have to find a 4 jaw that fits that backplate.

Dave, yes the chuck unscrews off the spindle (as does the faceplate) see the attached URL's: This one is the spindle: http://s304.photobucket.com/user/christineanniewalker/media/IMG_3299_zpstv9uyzmz.jpg.html?o=0
This one, the back of the 3 jaw chuck just removed (it just screws on, then held in place with a grub screw): http://s304.photobucket.com/user/christineanniewalker/media/IMG_3300_zpsex3itbhv.jpg.html?o=2 (This one is the spindle with a digital calliper, does it help? http://s304.photobucket.com/user/christineanniewalker/media/IMG_3301_zpsdh0tzjez.jpg.html?filters[user]=142907852&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=0 Sorry, I don't seem to be able to upload them to here, it doesn't like my mac! - not having a good day am I!) Roger, thanks for the manual. This is much more comprehensive than the rubbish I got with the lathe when I purchased it. At least Grizzly bothered to make a proper manual. |

Thanks clogs but I can't really afford to change it at the moment. I was hoping when I bought it, the dealer I bought it off might be able to provide some kind of backup/service. Sadly, that doesn't appear to be the case. Said dealer didn't even know what thread it was. For the amount of use I require, a more expensive lathe isn't financially viable, although it would be lovely. But hey. Thanks Roger, I suspected it wouldn't be. Couldn't be that straight forward could it. At this point, I guess my only option is to go with the original suggestion of loosening the bolts on the faceplate and lightly tapping it until I get a good centre. Appreciate your time gentleman, thank you. |

Thanks for all your replies. Unfortunately, any machining is a little beyond my capabilities at this point, I am pretty new to all this (as you can probably tell by my questions!) It has just been suggested to me that 39x4mm could possible be 1 1/2 x 6 TPI... thoughts? Or anyone know of a way I can check this please? Thanks again C |

Oh Roger, thank you, that is very kind of you. I am in Coventry so it's quite a way but not the other side of the world. naughty boy (nice name) it is threaded yes... I have pictures of it but can't seem to post them on here! This is the link to photobucket..... http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn184/christineanniewalker/IMG_3299_zpszwseih1c.jpg Thanks Mark. I will look at Chester....

Hi Michael, Roger and Iain and thanks for your replies. What a nightmare! You would think, wouldn't you, that an industry standard would prevail, obviously not! I don't have the skills to machine my own and was hoping (obviously naively to buy one off the shelf... just can't understand how a 3 jaw can come with the machine, yet a 4 jaw be like trying to find hen's teeth. I've just checked with Little Machine Shop and it would be $78 just for the backing plate to be bought and delivered to the UK. The job doesn't warrant that I am afraid. Back to the drawing board. |

Hello Can anyone help please. I need to buy a 4 jaw independent chuck for my Chinese made lathe, and of course, for a beginner, it is the usual minefield! The lathe has a spindle nose of 39x4mm.. a stupid question perhaps, but which chuck should I go for? I am guessing I'll probably have to buy an adaptor, but after speaking to a recognised UK model engineering supplier, they have never heard of that spindle nose! Why? it's a flipping standard lathe... I can't be the only person in the world with one of that size? Thanks for any advice in advance. Christine |

Chaps - I have managed to find out the spindle nose is 39 x 4mm... whatever that means. 20mm hole through spindle. Forgive the stupid question, but would a chuck with a 1"1/4 x 12 TPI fit? Christine |

Morning everyone Thanks all for the replies. I am going to try Jeff's suggestion of the 4-jaw chuck. However, I don't have one, so need to buy one! So today's problem... I can't find the specification for my lathe's spindle! I have googled and even tried the supplier, but got no where. I know it's a long shot, but it's a Chinese (I believe Real Bull?) CJ0623b... does anyone out there happen to know what thread pitch I need, please? All I can seem to find out is the spindle bore is 20mm! Also, would you recommend a 4 inch or 5 inch chuck? Again, thank you all for your help. (Ian P - I hope the workpiece is round!) Christine |

Hi Jeff That too is a great idea. Thanks for the advice. I've got some good ideas to try now. Thank you. |
