Thread: piston
08/04/2018 11:26:22

if the piston stops short at the ends by 1/16 , that will cover the ports . When the piston stops short of the ports top and bottom , it only has 1 3/4 inch stroke , but crank gives 2 in stroke . Piston is correct size . If as said the piston should end 1/16 short then that is within my grasp if I shorten the piston rod a little . But I am still confused about ithe piston covering the ports ( sorry I am thick . I have made engine before and the worked ok . never really noticed if the ports were covered )

the ports are cast in ( stuart turner no 1 ) I will investigate further

This is probably a stupid question , Something has gone wrong on the steam engine I am making , the piston is going too far up the cylinder . am I right in thinking that the piston should not go past the cylinder ports ? otherwise it wouldn't be able to exhaust all the steam . My piston rod is a couple of mil too long but the piston seems much too high , mybe the crank throw is a bit too much . ,Dismantle again , again !!!!!!

Thread: crank shaft
21/03/2018 16:00:29

your right , I didn't read all that post as I thought it only related to the out of line problem . Loctite and pin then !

21/03/2018 15:32:10

I could do with a bit of advice . I am building a simple crankshaft , at the moment it is a press fit together and in perfect alignment . I understand that silver solder wont penetrate through a tight fit , but I an reluctant to ease the pin and the shaft and maybe lose the alignment , What is others experience of Loctite and pinning ?

Thread: fly cutter ptoblems
06/03/2018 09:31:02

I wondered about a carbide cutter , but would it stand up to an interrupted cut . Regrinding my HHS this morning and trying much lower speed

05/03/2018 18:15:12

I am trying to machine a cast iron valve face with a fly cutter . but it blunts very quickly , Iron files easily . Cutter is turning about 250 rpm , 1 1/2 radius . what am I doing wrong

Thread: stuart 104

sorry yes , a 504 , that's what I thought , in spite of being told that it would . I havn't quite finished the engine yet

05/02/2018 19:58:43

can anyone tell me if a Stuart Turner 104 boiler will run a ST number 1 engine

Thread: Stuart No 1
06/01/2018 11:56:01

thanks , I will order a couple then before I bore the cylinder . The drawing I have gives the impression of a single ring

05/01/2018 16:33:36

oh thanks , the plan I have is a bit vague , I have bought a part built one , but no rings with it .

05/01/2018 12:42:31

can anyone tell me how many piston rings are fitted to a Stuart Turner No 1 , is it one or two ?( yes I have tried Stuarts )

Stuarts looks hopeful , thanks . I will leave it till after Christmas now , I expect most places are busy or on office parties . All the best for Christmas every one and may the new year see your workshops warm and dry and may you find all those parts you have stored somewhere safely !!!

20/12/2017 20:02:44

thanks , I will check out some of them , The only ones I have found yet are set screws , ie fully threaded

20/12/2017 19:30:09

does any one know a source of supply of 5 BA bolts or similar sized bolts with some plain unthreaded shank ? Or have I got to make my own .

Thread: regulator valve
12/12/2017 18:19:45

yes its obvious when someone points its it out to you , Trouble is the plan I have is drawn by someone who knows what they are doing for someone who also knows , All the parts are there but not how they go together , Still its coming together slowly . Thanks for the help

Ah, so I have it wrong then, the steam is already in the regulator chamber and its the opening into the slide valve chests that is uncovered . I was thinking that the valve uncovered the opening from the boiler . It's ransom simms and Jefferies 2 cylinder

I am just on the point of machining the valve and gland for my 2 inch traction engine . Does the valve need to be a tight fit over the rising steam hole ? the plan is a bit vague on the fit needed , surely the steam pressure will tend to force it off the seat when its closed and there is no pressure in the chamber ,Or am I missing something ?

Hello thanks every one for the advice , I am using a sievert 2941p burner and easyflo flux

27/11/2017 18:13:38

the parts I have been trying to silver solder are steel bar about 1/2 dia to 1 inch wide by 1.8 thick steel strip . it turns black before getting hot enough to solder . Using a severt gun , Does flux go off in the tub unmixed ?
