Thread: 5" Boxhill Grate |

Hello Bruno Thanks for the Info. I see you have two "forks" at the front end I guess to locate the grate?? My grate is stainless steel and the bars sit on top of the cross bars as it is a welded construction from Blackgates. My instructions which are copies from Model Engineer 1964 Say" The bottom edges of the inner wrapper being slotted to take the projecting lugs of the grate" With regards to your steaming problem a few of my fellow members at Chelmsford have fitted Rosebud grates to various locos with a fair degree of success dont know how this would would work with a sloping grate ?? Regards

Just a thought John, most commercially available safety valves have an ME thread as you have probably discovered, so why not make the boiler bush to suit what is available i.e 5/16x26tpi 32tpi or 40tpi all you need to do then is invest in additional tap to suit and save the time in making your own valve??

Good morning John I would normally run a 2nd cut tap right through as the depth of thread on the boiler bush is fairly short anyway. the important thing is the thread is not slack but you should be able to screw the fitting in by hand and just tighten home with the spanner. If you are making the fittings yourself then obviously you have more control over the fit, if you are purchasing the fittings then you are to an extent governed by the quality of the the threads on the fitting.

Hello John The preferred material for boiler bushes is phospher bronze. Certainly not brass because of the de-zincification with time

Hi all I am trying to finally finish my 5" Boxhill in particular grate and ash Pan. Am I missing something or does the grate really slope forward at quite an angle? It also says that the inner fire box lip should be notched to take the grate cross bars so is it not also necessary to notch the top of the ash pan ? All help greatly appreciated Bob Thompson |

Yes indeed it is only 20% plus the 20% I lost to Cheddar Valley previously, plus nearly 4 years ive been waiting with a half finished loco. Be interested to hear how long you have been waiting for yours???? Clearly we have the Wester Steam appreciation society in tonight. |

I quite agree and feel really sorry for Helen its a very painful experience indeed. However with the list of previous excuses including such things as apprentices leaving etc etc it does make one a wee bit concerned. At the end of the day they are running a business after all and the customers are surely entitled to some consideration and attention.

Hello I too am still waiting for a boiler which was due in Oct 18th 2018. I have had various extensions to this date each with its own excuse. Today I have received a letter to say that Helen has broken her collar bone and that delays in the oder of 6 months are to be expected. Having suffered a similar episode with the now defunct Cheddar Valley Steam I am starting to fear the worst for this company.

I must admit that is the way I looked at my situation the deposit was just over £200 and I considered it would be easy to spend that much on recovery

Well in my case my money was paid in June 2016, but surely it is likely that the company has no money and therefore any judgement in your favor still couldn't be paid??

Hi Michael. Im not sure but I think this may have the the original Cheddar Valley Steam Ltd before Tim was involved but I stand to be corrected on that one.

Good morning CuP Alloys 1, That is exactly the problem i dont know of anyone who has resolved a similar situation although a good few have been affected, in fact if you follow the thread back it stretches to 2010. I decided it was probably not prudent to throw good money after bad in a legal pursuit of my deposit .
