Martin, could possibly be a Silence Twister, which is a lookalike Spit designed for aerobatics, powered by a four cylinder opposed 2.6 litre , 107hp engine. Saw the 'Twister duo' do a magnificent evening/ night display at Bournemouth with pyrotechnics and lights a couple of years ago, really good! Designed initially as a r/c model, then scaled up to full size, bit contrary as we tend to do things the other way round. One of the pilots then was Guy Westgate who previously gave one of the best displays I have seen, at Shoreham, flying a glider, to a music track, with smoke generators on the wing tips, in a beautiful clear blue sky, really pushing the aerobatic envelope doing manoeuvres I had never seen a glider do before. Really really enjoyed that. Adrian. |
Thread: Faceplate or Independent Chuck? |
22/10/2017 15:07:00 |
Colin, I have a CJ18A lathe, and bought a 100mm four jaw with the lathe, and certainly use that quite a bit. I have also recently bought a faceplate from Amadeal as well for one job, but not used it yet. Four jaw for preference! |

A well known German company started supplying their garden shredders with a 5 point centre pin security screw to hold the two main parts together, where previously one way slip screws had been supplied. Guess where the only place you could obtain the required tool to do them up with came from? They charged us nearly ten quid for the bit to fit your normal hex driver! And these machines were supposed to be assembled by Joe Public! |
Thread: a rat in the house! |
26/09/2017 18:03:06 |
When I was young, our old house cat Smudge, used to catch rats, mice, snakes and rabbits, and eat them under my parents bed! This involved climbing up the old pear tree growing up the end of the house, jumping four foot to the landing window sill, then climbing in and then under the bed. Many times mum & dad would be woken by the sound of crunching bones! |
Thread: Size of generator for a large electric motor |
22/09/2017 18:30:23 |
The farm I worked on had 85ft high silage towers which used an enclosed fan unit to blow the material up the tube on the side of the tower, into the hatch in the top. The suppliers of the fan told us we needed a fifty horse electric motor to drive it, or a similar engine. We ended up, after trying three different tractors, using a 116 hp tractor, and that struggled! The other bit of fun was climbing up the ladder in the morning and night to open and close the hatch on the top, being careful not to breathe too much gas out of the tower. |
Thread: English dialect |

Quite common around here too, although being southerners we say Will's mother! Definitely to do with black clouds overhead. Also another common Sussex saying about the weather; "If the Downs look Close, it's going to rain, if you can't see the Downs it's already raining" |

"D**k in a wellie boot" tends to indicate a rather looser than required fit in our Hampshire workshops. My father being of Sussex &Kent extraction had a lot of local sayings, but CRS means I can't relate any here. |
Thread: Beam engine piston ? |

Most manufacturers now recommend keeping your strimmer line in water to keep it flexible and resist hardening and becoming brittle, breaking off at the eyelet and super annoying you! Also those white swinging blades for heads as well. |

Thread: Off Topic - Travel to Farnham |

Uni is the other side of town to the station, so taxi needed, although Farnham is not a big town , wouldn't want to walk it. |

+1 for Bletchley, brilliant place, went earlier this year. The engineering in those machines is beautiful, real works of art, the brains that designed those were certainly on top of the game! Must do Mary Rose again soon, as they have changed the way she is presented since we last went. Off to Southampton to the Solent Sky museum next week. |
Thread: Isopropyl Alcohol as a Fuel |
19/07/2017 21:44:38 |
If you use a product called 'Aspen' or one of its contemporaries, these are alkylate fuels , containing no petroleum, will not go off like unleaded, having a five year shelf life helps a lot as well! It is ethanol free, so no water problems, has no benzines, and burns without the fumes and smells associated with petrol. This is what most Authorities and Contractors now use for mowers and brush cutters, hedge trimmers etc., due to the improved health benefits to their workers and the environment. You could use Coleman fuel as well, but is the same stuff as Aspen, but is four times the price! |

That Suffolk 75G engine will go on for years after the ally chassis has disintegrated. When I started work, one of those engines cost £21.00, the whole mower cost £19.19.6 ! When you added up all the spare parts it came to over £40!! |

The new hangar is called the 'Spitfire Blister' and there appears to be up to three two seaters based at Sywell. The Grace Spit, and two from Aerolegends that split between Sywell and Headcorn. A flight in one will only cost from £2500.00 a go! |

Martin, it could have been Caroline Grace's Mk IX, based at Sywell, not too far away. I was lucky enough to see this plane there last month, as I was up there to partake in 90 minutes of Boeing 737 simulator use, bought for me by my colleagues as a retirement present. Three lucky persons were taken up in the Spit during my time at the field, and there is a new hangar just been completed, with another close to being finished, where the Spits are kept. I think there are two kept at Sywell, so far.

Thread: Parafin blowlamp |
14/04/2017 09:16:42 |
Where I was born and grew up, in deepest rural Sussex, we didn't have electricity until I was 11. So we had three Primus stoves and two Tilley lanterns, including a wall mount one that I've never seen an example of since. Dad had a Primus stove in his workshop and two Primus blow lamps. The Valor cylindrical heater in the scullery always had the kettle on top, careful how you went past that! |

They were about, certainly, I had some when I was much younger and mucking about with cars and bikes that needed them. But with modern vehicles that you can't do much with, use of them has died out. Last time i needed to clean contacts, I used emery cloth. Could always use needle files as an alternative. |
