Well I stripped the Apron yesterday, man this thing is in great nick for its age ,half nuts were like new as was the worm gear, no play in any of the shafts ,the gears were also in great nick . Now everything is back together I'm going to move onto the headstock. New belts arrived on Friday . Sean |

I've started the strip down and have run into my first wee problem on the topslide gib screws . I went to loosen the lock nuts ,and on two of them the top of the gib screw just fell off with slightest touches with the spanner ,luckily i managed to get one of the out but the other one is stuck fast . I tried center drilling it with no joy they seem to be hardened steel . I measured them ,but not being sure about imperial sizes i'm not sure what size they are .. they measure as follows ... dia ...... 5mm length ...22.7mm

I see .... I can't use white spirits i loath the smell of the stuff it gives me headaches . I'm not going to be painting it ,I'm liking the "patina" look, and anyways if i spent days (weeks knowing me) prepping and painting ...i wouldn't want to dirty it . . The 3/4 hp Hoover motor is also going to be seriously looked ,still not starting without help from me .

This is something i plan on getting very soon ,my only problem is that i'm not sure what i need . My cross carriage doesn't have T-bolt slots . The topslide mounts onto a round stub (for the want of a better word) I think it's not unlike the Atlas lathe of the same year . Sean |

I decided to totally strip down the Fortis and move to it's new home ,degrease it and rebuild it replacing what's needing replaced .The link belt fell apart yesterday so i'm fitting the proper belt this time . What do you guys use for the degreasing,i've been using brake cleaner .

I think everyone would have a different idea of "small " I would say the lathe you describe will be happier [ and it will be easier on it ] with Positive inserts, far less cutting forces. The CNMG'S will work ok, but they do generate higher cutting forces. For example, a depth of cut of say 1.5mm , the forces generated by the Positive insert will be far less than those generated by the Negative insert for the same depth of cut. On me Warco GH750 which has 3 hp and weighs approx 600 kg I use positive inserts, but on the DSG I use a mixture. Positive will certainly be kinder to your machine. cheers.
Thanks again Reymond. I'll order asap

Thanks Raymond,What do you class as a small lathe .This is a 12" swing 20" between centers and a 1hp motor . Interesting point on the negative and positive rake on an insert/tooling

Thread: Bit of a barter |
16/10/2016 13:20:29 |
Have had a wee think ,I had a look at the price of stainless steel and i'd rather someone who can make good use of it rather than me wasting it ,i wonder if anyone was up for a bit of a barter with the stainless steel rod .
I'm just starting out in this turning lark and i think this material is a bit too specialised for my mediocre skill level. Biggest bar is 70mm and 200mm long there's a bar at 50mmx430mm And a a stepped turned shaft 55mm at the widest down to 35mm by 530mm long
Things i'd consider bartering i need a live center mt2 CNMG 432 insert holder up to 20mm Steady rest Quick change tool post and tool holders A nice dial gauge with mag mount tripod (not sure what you call them) Micrometer Tailstock chuck Some nice brass or copper .
As you can see i truly am just starting out ,and these suggestions are just an idea .... and you folks can tell me to take a run and jump for asking in the first place . If you don't ask you don't get .....lol
