Thread: Is This Key Grinder Worth Buying?

Fabby chic for an old antique for display in the living room?  Or perhaps for the barn or attic collection?

Thread: 1000 Hours in 12 Minutes
16/12/2016 07:34:52

More like a thousand days for lots of us? I doubt I could get to that level of perfection in ten years, mind!

I had already watched it - he is on my preference list - and all his other u-toob vids are exceptional, too.

Thread: sales spiel

Buyers need to ' get real'.

Many sellers are out there to fleece the buyer. Many describe all the good attributes but gloss over, or omit, any shortcomings. Some systems, like the big river, try to make the buyer think they will get a bargain if they buy NOW! If an idiot were to buy from the exhorbitant source, that source would simply buy from a cheaper seller and pass it on to you at a hefty profit. Like the scammers, they only need one taker in umpteen thousands to make an easy 'killing'.

No complaint about anything purchased from ebay if 'as described' - potential buyer needs to ask the pertinent questions and decide for themselves before committing to purchase. Evasive replies mean they are simply sellers to avoid. If you have it in writing, you have evidence of fraud if they have lied.

There are not that many genuine descriptions. It's called marketing hype, among the other versions. Buyer needs to make up their own minds re the quality or 'fit for service' of any item on sale, new or old.

How many times do you see things described as 'old antique', or 'old' something when you already know production ceased 50 years ago? Maybe those descriptions are for those of lesser brain function?

Have you 'book marked' it somewhere and forgotten that?

Thread: Lathe location
15/12/2016 22:44:51

Enough space to fit drawbars or longer lengths of bar that need supporting? Best have the one with the wider spindle clearance towards the middle of the garage? The stand with mg Raglan has a cupboard in the front and coolant space (or other) accessed from the rear, so best spaced away from everything!

Thread: Holding drill bits
14/12/2016 07:50:00

This is simple once one thinks about it. Why would manufacturers provide every drill bit with a plain shank? Is it just for somewhere to mark its size? Is it so it can be stored in a nice box with holes for each drill size? Is it so they can make it easier? Or is there (an)other reason(s)?

I doubt HSS is any tougher at one end or the other, just much thicker section at the plain end? So more likely to shatter at the flutes?

Thread: WHat can you make with these things ?
13/12/2016 10:43:33

Given a suitable cutter, they would cut anything, I suppose! Diamond drillor cutter would even cut glass.

BUT, remember a dremel is about 130W and this is just 30W. So less power than the average sewing machine? Dremels will turn at several thousand rpm

Mickey Mouse if he was made of soft soap might be about its limit without overstraining it, I might guess. Here is the maximum handling specs taken directly from the ad:

Max. thickness of cut: hardwood: 4mm, plywood: 7mm, softwood: 18mm, sheet metal: 0.5mm, plexi-glass

I would think the 'maximum' might mean that quite precisely. Does that not answer your original post?

Thread: Heritage steam under coal threat
11/12/2016 23:29:27

I was told, when we visited and went along the working face, that Bolsover colliery never ever mined below the castle and that, there alone was a million tonnes of coal in undisturbed seams.

A lot of the mining problems were caused by 'grandad', who removed the best/easiest single seam, leaving the rest to eventually collapse/produce gas pockets, etc, thus making life more difficult for any later safe mechanical extraction.

The coal we used from Dawmill was much higher in pyrites than that from Bolsover. Cheaper, but caused us a lot of 'headaches' in that the higher sulphur content led to more potential blockages in the process.

Mike,

Post it up on the Raglan forum. There might be some help from there.

Thread: Warco VMC partial disassembly
11/12/2016 17:03:01

Just saying 'it's too heavy' is admitting defeat? Is your access so difficult? Half a tonne is nothing for a pallet truck. Agreed, the centre of mass is a bit tricky if at all rough and removing the head would reduce it considerably.

Short lengths of pipe and a couple of pairs of hands is the usual for those with no wheeled assistance.

Is it on a pallet? That might be the first thing to consider as it can then be strapped to it, affording a larger base for stability.

Did you get it on the VAT free offer machine mart ... ?

Michael,

There is no such thing as "VAT free" from Machinemart. It is a fallacy. It is simply a sale period with that particular reduction on the normal retail price as shown normally. The only legit way of buying from a VAT registered company is with VAT added ( or buying VAT exempt items - like books or children's clothing, etc.).

Thread: Rebuilt Nightmare
10/12/2016 15:24:00

That may be apparent to those who have access to every input to the forum but is basically unhelpful.

Maybe he doesn't have a high pain threshold? Who knows!

Maybe he expected perfection forcfourpence halfpenny? Who knows!

Maybe any rebuild is a nightmare to him? Whk knows!

Until we know just a tad more than a title and a picture, lets just pass it by?

Thread: An open request for microcontroller type equality
09/12/2016 18:24:03

From a 2N3055 and BC108/9 electronic age, I would think AVR was an automatic voltage control for an alternator generator.

However, there will never be parity (equality) where devices are concerned. Wasn't with VCR and Beta-max video recorders/players, so why should equality expected now? 'Horses for courses' will always determine which choice of device will win out. Same with everything else, too. Cars - petrol or diesel choices and EVs to take their place? - might be another example.

Plenty of space without screaming for parity. Why do I wind up our old clocks rather than ditch them for quartz controlled battery operated ones? I actually find the ticking more interesting than the almost silence of the new generation of wall clocks, where no more skill is required than changing a cell once every few months. But a modern smoke alarm is far better than waiting for a lead fuse to melt and raise a racket. Equality in everything is like communism - an ideal but just doesn't work!

Thread: Hi from a-not-so-model engineer
09/12/2016 18:01:56

Scale is only a perceived requirement fof a model engineer. Scaled down for models but there is always scaling up - mock up for cars or road building projects for instance.

Just look at the Colin Furze U-toob channel for his latest 'model'! A slightly up-scaled model of AT ACT?

I, too, make little or nothing scaled down. A dozen old tractors, stationary engines, etc are enough to keep me busy for the rest of my time.

A chemist as well, morphing into engineering projects, then back to chemistry then on to other things at times. I still remember atomic masses from the common radioisotope numbers, mostly! Always close but not usually spot on!

Ajohnw,

You are right about the LJ Raglan. I would not use mine like that unless there was no other possible option, or the materials were relatively easy to cut. The 5" would be far more robust in this area and may well cope with care. Options

suggested are not necessarily appliccable to all kit and the OP needs to take things into account, for his machine.

Handraulic shaper tool in the toolpost?

Cut a square hole in position before boring? (See Clickspring video for making one).

Pin the gears together with a pegs until such time as you can do the keyways

?

U-toob might be your friend for ideas and demos.  Here is one example:  https://youtu.be/yQcgLDZLMsk

Thread: Should I Be Able To Do This?
08/12/2016 13:28:05

It does happen.

Over 40 years ago I found the ex's father had supplied her with a double ended extension lead which she was using with a hair dryer.

More recently, my wife needed to re-educate her 90 year old father on the same matter.  He argued that he knew what he was doing as he worked as a radio operator/fixer during WWII. Luckily, she won!
