Thread: Square thread cutting
02/04/2020 09:30:04

Hi Old Mart,

Your link you put up is the type of tool holder I was considering but wondered if the cutting tip would stay in place while cutting?

I think I'm going to do as Simon collier suggested and use a suitable bar and drill and tap to hold a cutter. I'll modify a 16mm boring bar shank to suit

Many thanks again for all your help and advise

Hi David G

The thread is a right hand 1.75" by 6 TPI, my lathe is a Raglan little john mk 2 (5" with a qcgb . I have cut external threads many times but never really attempted internal threads, my Lathe can be reversed with switch but the spindle nose is threaded so it might unscrew? . I was just wondering if grooving tools could be used or if there was something better? I have a P horn internal grooving tool but haven't had much success with it as the shank has been ground a away and it vibrates so I don't really use it. threading with it is impossible

Hi everyone

I'm looking for a little guidance I need to cut an internal square thread to make a back new back plate to hold a small 3 inch chuck, my question is can a internal grooving tool be used to cut a internal Square thread and/or which tool type would be recommended

Many thanks

I've put a picture of thread in my gallery

Just a quick question can a small Jewellers blowtorch be used to silver solder inside a fire box for the stays?

Thread: Minnie traction engine stays help need
07/01/2020 07:11:30

Hi everyone,

Having drilled one side of my traction engine for the horn plates and had snapped two drills in the process I didn't want a repeat on the other side and having to have them spark eroded again, so I went to my local go to Engineering firm to have the stays drilled for me, an easy enough job and cheaper then spark erosion again,

Well when I got it back I could of cried he had drilled the five stays but two of them have been drilled through the side of the stay inside the fire box the boiler now longer holds pressure, the boiler came to me already made with test certificate , I know the boiler certificate is out of date by about 20 years but the boiler has never been fired and I was hoping to make the traction engine (which is my first ever build) I was hoping not to have too any issues getting the boiler recertificated

Any advise and help would be greatly appreciated is this boiler salvageable or do I have to drill the stays out or are the other options (I have never silver- soldered before) or would anyone be willing to help do this for me

Many thanks for the help

George

I have put some pictures in my album I don't know how to post them on here

Hi Jason B,

That makes sense now, I'd asked a couple of friends what they would be for and they were not sure either, But now I can see how they will be made

Thank you for your help

Hi everyone,

I am about to start making the front wheel hubs and cannot for the life of me find the information and measurement for them? I have the book by L C Mason and the original plans for the 1in minnie but find they a vague. Looking through the box of casting I have I have identified almost every item I need but not sure if these are the casting for the hubs?

George

My picture is he my album and I'm not sure how to put it on here thank you

Hi everyone

Just wondering when you build the rear wheels is it best to rivet the strakes on first or do the spoke and hubs first?

Thread: SIP Variable Speed Floor Drill Press
30/11/2019 13:40:18

I agree a good old quality second hand drill and buy a 3 phase convert , I've recently brought a fobco 1/2 cap floor standing drill it already had a 3 phase motor on it and I had a spare 3 phase convert luckily, to suit the motor, using my pendent switch I can run it from 1 rpm to 4200 rpm if I wished , the drill came from a local joinery company that was closing down (£25)

Thread: fobco star drill spindle
19/11/2019 13:37:18

Hi everyone,

I've just brought a fabco floor standing drill today but it has the return spring and return spring retaining cap missing, I can make a new cap on my lathe but just wondered if anyone had a drill like this, and be willing to let me know the measurement of the cap and also the measurements of the spring please,

Many thanks for the help and advise

Hi

Would anyone volunteer to put up a picture of the drill bit that's been modified as I to need to drill through some stays on my Minnie traction engine build, I have already broken 2 drills and have had to have them spark eroded out already and don't fancy repeating

Hi Derek,

This is a long term project and my first real build I'm going to take my time, I have a good group of very knowledgeable friends in my local engineering group, which are offering a lot of advise so between them and advise on here I'm sure I'll get there.

Theirs a few things which are confusing me when I start to make the wheels are the (spokes) riveted or screwed into place the same question for the wheel strakes if they are riveted too ? if so are these homemade or can you purchase them and what size?

Hi everyone

I had a set back I managed to break 2 drill bits while drilling the stays, I have found a firm that has spark erosion which has now been done. In the mean time I have cut out the horn plates ready.

Thread: What lathes have you had?
21/07/2019 18:58:38

Hi everyone

I started with a lathe called the IDEAL which my dad taught me on 30 years ago I still have it and have restored it, I don't really use it but can't bring myself to part with now he's not around anymore.

Then a RELMAC another basic lathe and a rescue project from a local farmer that was going to scrape it it served its purpose at the time.I then upgraded to a Atlas ( sphere ), one of the worst things and the biggest mistake I ever brought, I'd been told it was a okay lathe but when I got it it had been parted out and was a bag of nails

I am now proudly own and use daily a Raglan little John Mk2 with a QCGB I would never change my lathe for love nor money, unless it was for another raglan little John mk2 it may be old (1954) but in (my own opinion) one of the best lathes ever and punches well above its weight for its size.
