Thread: Runout drilling 2mm hole
08/11/2017 19:58:18

Hi,

I need to drill a small hole (I selected 2mm) in a steel plate and aluminium plate.

I then put some 2mm rod through both to create a pivot point.

The problem is the pivot is very sloppy - the hole I drill (with Sieg equivelent x2/x3 milling machine and R8 taper) in the alloy is obviously bigger than the jobber bit I'm using.

I've measured the run-out of possible parts:

1-10mm 3 jaw chuck 0.07mm (arc euro part)

ER 16 collet holder 0.01 (ebay part)

2mm collet when fitted in holder 0.07

So I'm thinking the 2mm ER16 collet adds 0.06mm run out - the problem is with buying any of these parts I don't see a run-out specification.

Is 0.07mm normal/acceptable? I'm a bit dissapointed in the arc euro chuck but maybe all 3 jaw chucks are very poor?

Also - I can't measure the hole I drill... maybe its much further out than +0.07?

I thought maybe I can try to get some ~2.1mm rod or make some but the 2mm rod seems a reasonably tight fit in the steel so I think (but can't measure) the hole in steel is closer to the 2mm and the hole in alloy is 2.07mm or more...

Any tips or am I expecting far too much?

I thought about making a bigger hole but it would still have the same error in the size wouldn't it?

Just an update I bought a 14" Titan abraisive chopsaw for £80 from screwfix that was rubbish - the clamping system would not hold the piece properly - also it was very very slow to cut - much slower than an angle grinder with 1mm disk - maybe because the chop saw disk is 3mm.

Anyway I took that back and bought an evolution sliding 210mm mitre saw for £100 (reason is at least with a mitre saw you have a true 90deg angle to the back - the chopsaws appear to all have flimsy clamps that cannot be set upto 90 deg.

Anyway I'm massively impressed with this saw - goes through steel or alu very easy and both angles can be adjusted to get true 90degrees.

For smaller pieces I drilled through the base-plate so I can hold my milling machine clamps on there making it quite versitile.

Next job it to replace the plastic bits where the blade goes through which leave 10mm gap either side of the blade with something solid then I'll just cut a slot in that the blade needs so there is zero gap from the surface to the blade.

Does anyone have a link to the cheap chinese bandsaws as a good one is well out of my price range. What sort of price am I looking at?

What cooling do you use or none?

I bought a spray mister unit which keeps the tool wet but makes a lot of mess.

Im wondering if a graviy feed or car washer pump may be the trick?

Or mill dry but i see oil misting off so the cutter quickly gets upto 200deg plus which cant be good for it....

Thanks for the replied. I made the long cut with the angle grinder and 1mm disk it took 5min and was not a nice job. I.e. can't see the cutting line for the sparks flying in your facevetc. I did have the shield on and moved to catch as many sparks as possible but plenty still escape. Does the grinder stand stop sparks flying at you?
Thread: What grade aluminuim rod for rivetting?
19/12/2016 17:33:50

I want to buy small aluminium rod and have the ends say 2mm dia rivetted. I cant use normal rivets because I need a thicker center section.

So what grade alloy do I need? and is that fairly common i.e my local stockist should have it?

And what is the reason for this limitation is it the strength of the cutter or the removal of swarf?

If it is swarf can you cut through a material to a greater depth than you can cut a slot in it?

Thread: What parts would I need to use my mill as a small lathe?
19/12/2016 12:37:19

Martin - that's a very good suggestion thanks - I already have an ER32 and should get me going so I will just need to buy a suitably small collet for the 1st job that is probably using 3 or 4mm bar. Oh and a cutting tool - again they are very cheap.

19/12/2016 11:26:50
If I wanted to machine parts say 1" length by 1" width. Can I get a 3jaw Chuck and attach to the milling head?

For small parts I could hold the tool in my vice or can you get specific tool posts for this that are not too expensive? What would be an idea of cost?

Say I have some angle iron I want to cut and it's 3 to 4 mm thick by 40mm and 2m long.

I need to cut 200mm off then cut along one side (200mm cut)

I'm getting a bit fed up of doing this with a hacksaw I don't do loads but it's hard going..

I'm wondering if I should invest in a chop saw I can get one from screwfix for £80 or £90? Though that seems to use an abrasive blade.. Or would the money be better spent (and save precious garage space) getting a cutting arbour? But that can't cut the length.

I could mill a slot the whole way through the 200mm length but expect that will be a slow process if I'm using a small cutter and.

Is there a good rule on the max depth of cut that can be used for slot milling?

Is that the same for end milling?

What are the know improvements for this mill?

Im im the process of adding digital calipers for dro's.

Is there any way to reduce or eliminate the backlash in the bed for climb milling?

I heard somewhere welding up the tilt feature, filling with concrete or both may improve the stiffness a lot.

What about brass guideways?

Anything else?
Thread: Milling a slot in a milling vice
22/11/2016 18:54:54
My vice has slots milled in it but only so i can mount it along the bed. I would have thought it would be much more useful to mount it so the jaws are parallel to the bed...
22/11/2016 15:03:53
Rod thats clever thinking Ill copy your method. Do you know if the base will mill ok again adsuming its cast?
21/11/2016 20:21:41
So ive bought the 80mm milling vice from arc euro but how do I go about milling a slot across the bottom so it will locate in the bed to keep the jaws parallel when remounting? What would be the method of mounting and lining it up and on top of that can I mill the material I assume its cast?

In the end I tried a cheap spear shaped glass drill bit at low speed and lots of pressure and that was making good progress until i crushed the tip with too much pressure. I then used a newly sharpened hss bit to contunue and whilst it screached badly and was much slower that got through in the end.

Michael,

You may have done the obvious buy you may have hit gold - I didn't check for stockists in Cov as the last time I needed steel simple angle iron about 8 years ago i had to goto Nuneaton...

I'll have a nosy round to see what they've got and whether any carry alu as well.

Woops i think I got cobalt and carbide mixed up for the drill bits I was looking at.

As usual one here it would seem i am trying to drill a 5mm hole in a digital caliper to make a dro.

If any electrical item is dangerous when bought please report to trading standards to investigate. I would start with the department from where the machines are sold not where you live.

I can buy a 5mm colbalt bit from Arc Euro

http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Cutting-Tools/Twist-Drill-Bits/Drill-Bits---Cobalt/40-55mm

While I put my order in for the milling vice so that should work I assume. it's £2 so worth a gamble at any rate - will I need a smaller bit for a pilot first though?
