Might be worth a try in the WANTED section ?

Thread: Lathe chuck not true.
02/03/2018 19:50:42

I bought a unimat to learn on and soon found out the 3 jaw did not run true.

I bought a new unused 4 jaw independent on ebay and that is all I use now for round and square.

Takes a bit longer to set up with a DTI but suits me for my little bits.

Not sure if this is what the experienced members of the forum would do ?

Roedean has been republished in ME. All the issues are in the online archive.

Try volume 207 dated 2011.

Thread: new to the hobby - first lathe

Asked the same question recently about a new Myford.

Decided against it in view of the advice from members.

Some very helpful comments in the thread so you may find it worthwhile reading.

At the moment Warco is top of the list,

Never found a need personally, and you would be altering the original design of the boiler which is often frowned upon by the Boiler Inspectors.

Regards

Lofty

Still learning so excuse the question but Lofty has already stated it works perfectly as it is.

So James why would you want to alter a proven design?

Thread: Large Lathe - 16 feet diameter faceplate.

If the pistons were 12' dia, what did they machine the cylinders on? An even massiver boring machine presumably!

Murray

I do not know - I am not an engineer. I had been hoping one of our members with engineering knowledge in this area would be able to add to the thread.

I am assuming that a 16 foot diameter faceplate accomodated the cylinder as well as the piston.

Would be interested to hear from other members on this point you have raised.

Are these the engines one of which is preserved at Cruquius? Excellent museum and well worth a visit...

Jez. I believe they are but have only just found out about it today.

Posted the info just out of interest as did not know pistons had been made that size and a 16 foot diameter faceplate must be one of he largest made - but if any member knows of a larger one it would be good to hear about.

Seeing the large lathe thread prompted a bit of research

Circa 1840, the Perran Foundry in Cornwall built in house what was the largest lathe in the world at that time.

The faceplate was 16 feet diameter and it was used to turn the12 foot diameter pistons for the three engines for the Haarlemmermeer drainage scheme in Holland.

Thread: Help for a simple wood turner in East Kent please
01/03/2018 14:13:04

He has fluting jigs, sphere jigs, etc.

It would be helpful if you could say what operation you need the jig for.

As Emgee has said without drawings it is hard to help.

Size / make / model of lathe would be helpful .

Thanks you

Definitely better value than a new Myford.

Thread: Any other out of touch members ?
27/02/2018 21:17:41

Keep the replies coming chaps - this is gettng interesting.

Martin Ranson -good reply -sounds as if our hand tools are of the same vintage - my drill has a round wheel on top that rachetsthe bit down as yo turn the handle.

I do have a small radio in the workshop set to Classic FM as enjoy the background music whilst fiddling around.

Mt wife just raised the same question on her ETSY shop forum and from America she hears of members who still have there own generators for electricity. some are still on dial up for computers whatever that means and one has a 50 mile drive into the nearest town.

So to Martin the fully paid up luddite - you are not alone.

goodnight all

Billy B

PS - she just asked the lady who lives 50 miles out of town what she does for the doctor if she feels unwell - answer - get in the truck and go like hell and hope I get to the doc in town before I die.

I think I am out of touch with modern technology - Smartphone - what on earth is that ?

We have never had a television, mobile phone etc.

We have a 10 year old computer running Firefox, a landline and that is it.

Couple of old F===== you may say and you are probably right.

So does anybody else admit to being behind the times, living in the stone age. call it what you will ?

Answers of YES will be of comfort.

Neil

I have never had this problem before today

Today I had a different message , ie different style and layout to anything I have had before.

Did not even tell me I was getting the message from from an M E enquiry.

BB

Just to say sorted and all items spoken for so well pleased.

Thread: Hobby related jokes

A priest, an ophthalmologist, and an engineer were golfing one morning behind a particularly slow group of golfers.

The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"

The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!"

The priest said, "Here comes the greens keeper. Let's have a word with him."

He said, "Hello, George. What's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?"

The greens keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we let them play for free anytime."

The group fell silent for a moment. Then the priest said, "That's so sad. I think I'll say a special prayer for them."

The ophthalmologist added, "Good idea. And maybe I could examine them to see if there's anything I can do for them."

They were silent for a moment.

Then the engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"
