Thanks a bunch ,that’s saved the day

25/09/2023 23:53:12

I am currently in the middle of building Westbury's road roller . I am in need of a copy of an article which appeared in the M.E in 1941 ..Vol 84 Iss 2074 Pg 105 entitled Gilding the lily .the article contains some improvements to the original design. Can anyone print off and email me a copy of this article.I will happily reimbuse any cost arising .

Thread: The Engineers Emporium - Red Wing hit and miss engine
27/12/2019 23:58:20

Hi I bought the Red Wing castings from the Emporium a couple of years ago . I picked them up at Doncaster , Adran even carried them out to the car for me ! . On looking through the kit at home I found a couple of the small items to be missing . Rang the firm and the missing items were dispatched straight away . I have purchased other sets from them and had equally good service .

I finished the engine and it looks good and runs well so I'm delighted with it .Hope you are equally so in due course.

does anyone have the G.A drawing of Harry Clarksons Steeple engine . And if so could they photo copy it . I believe it could be done with 4 sheets of A4 ..I have acquired the drawings and castings but the G.A has faded to unreadable .Will happily pay matl's postage etc . Thanks Jeff C.

Hi . I promised to post an occasional update on this project as time went by , been busy with jobs of all descriptions , had a red letter day last week got the engine to run for the first time . Runs like a lame dog but I will have to build a test rig to load it before I try to fix it . I have completed the wheels which are chewed out of a 4" cast iron bar I had laid about , I'll try and attach a picture of them . Progress is not quick but more will follow in time .img_0072.jpg

Thread: BOILER CLEADING
01/07/2018 23:47:01

This is something of a negative reply but you never know , it may help . The best material I have ever had for that job is lead coated stainless steel . It is quite thin ( probably in the order of 16 swg ) solders beautifully , easy to cut etc. It is used as a replacement for lead roofing on churches and similar . I managed to scrounge a few offcuts when a local church was being repaired after a visit by some lead thieves . Might be worth asking around you may get lucky .

Sorry Jeff been holidaying etc Progress is slow but I've done a few bits . Have posted a couple more photos , including this one . I'm currently completing the carburettor . More when there is anything to report .img_0056.jpg

The loco is a complete published design complete with centrifugal clutch and infinitely variable forward and reverse gear , all of this needs making . the design was published in the Model Engineer in a series running from 1941 to 1943 with a few odd issues after that . Should keep me busy for a while .

Marcus I don't have any information about the original cooling system . The model was an experiment in ic powered locomotives and only needs a simple cooling system i.e an evaporative approach is fit for purpose in the model .

Thanks Paul for posting the pictures , very helpful , can you leave them there for about 10 years !!!

picture of todays effort .img_0041.jpg

The original was an experimental diesel shunter . It started life as an 0-6-0 steam loco circa 1890 . The L.M.S removed the boiler , cylinders and other bits , they then fitted a diesel engine and a Heath Robinson drive mechanism . It wasn't a great success but they carried on with follow ups . The drive system in the model is a friction system which I intend to build as drawn . Many people had trouble with it . Ian Bradley made a three speed and reverse gearbox for his and others did similar things . Thank you Paul I am aware of the laser bits but I'm old fashioned and like to produce my own bits and pieces . incidentally I have seen Ivan's example a long time ago .I am currently machining cast iron blanks for the wheels which I'm chewing out of the solid ( more swarf than job ) That's it for now I will post the odd pic now and then .

I have started to build this loco which was designed 1941/3 and described in the model engineer at the time . I inherited the part built (75%) petrol engine which I have since almost completed , so I have now started on the loco itself . With the help of friends both old and new I have managed to source most of the drawings . I have started a photo album and will try to remember to update it now and then . I have attached here a photo of the current progress .img_0037.jpg

Thread: E T Westbury 1831

Hi I have started to build Westburys 1831 loco and need photocopies of articles from two magazines which I have been unable to get hold of . Please can anyone help with photocopies from these two magazines .

Thread: Making Clock Face
19/04/2017 00:03:17

I don't know anything about the kx1 mill but I use Partmaster from Dolphin Cad/Cam to do all my programming and post processing ( it will work with most systems ). You can trial it for free but it will not post process without a licence . If you ring them in Edinburgh they will sell you a hobby license but it ain't cheap . Have made several clock faces this way plus loads of other work .

Thread: Titan HSS drill bit sharpner
06/02/2017 00:05:54

The Potts drill grinding jig is extremely good as it corrects the point geometry for each size of drill . I don't think anyone sells it ready to use but a kit and drawings are available from Hemmingway's . You do need the kit and ability to work to close angular limits it you have a go at one .

Thread: Myford taper turning attachment
30/01/2017 00:11:04

My super7 (1995) has 1/4 B.S.F threads for the taper turning attachment .A useful tip is to fit a stud in the centre hole and use a nut and washer , this makes life a lot easier if you can't get behind your lathe . 3 studs may be better still but I usually manage with just the centre one

Thread: Myford top slide
23/01/2017 23:00:17

Steve , Thanks for the offer but I managed to get it just over a thou difference from the original with a reasonable finish . See you soon I hope .

Hopper I made my unit from the solid , but I'm a glutton for punishment , Kennions advertise castings and drawings for it .I used the original articles in the M.E. Haven't got the issue number to hand but can easily find it if it would help .

Just finished making this Radford top slide for my Super 7 ,does what it says on the tin . Doubt anyone is very interested but just in case the whole thing is chewed out of the sold . Main parts are cast iron , feedscrew is 3/8 acme thread feedscrew bracket is alloy machined both sides . I only made it for a bit of light relief after finishing my Shand Mason fire engine which is an extremely finicky model to build , nearly drove me demented a couple of times . Thread: Further use for tool sharpening fixture
18/01/2017 23:44:35

I recently posted some pictures of a grinding fixture that I made for sharpening tangential cutting tools . I needed to hand turn part of a new cross slide handle , for this I use a homemade graver as watchmakers gravers are a bit fragile for hacking chunks of bar stock . Just dawned on me that said graver can be sharpened on the same fixture , this would be a work of genius always assuming that I had done it on purpose . One more brain cell and I'd be dangerous .
