The magnets from an old computer hard drive are excellent for welding and very strong, and the disc is an excellent unbrakable workshop mirror.

Thread: Steam pipework SWG

Just following up on this, is there any reason not to use annealed copper pipe- it is cheaper than the straight lengths and comes in a coil so longer single lengths?

Thanks Jason. I tried searching SWG and a couple of other terms, but obvoiusly not the correct ones.

I’m tidying up the pipework on a Simplex, most of which is 3/16”. What SWG should I use / is there a minimum recommended? The supplier I’m intending using lists 16, 20 & 22 SWG.

Thread: axle box lubrication

Many thanks David, really helpful, good point about separate chambers in the oil box.. Gavin

I've got a 5" Simplex, and want to fit lubrication pipework for the axle boxes. The obvious solution is a lubrication box on the front of each side tank, with a pipe to each axle box. Question is what size of pipe to use - is 3/32" sufficient?.

Is there an alternative approach to gravity - i.e. concealing a oil nipple somewhere ( say inside the box mentioned above) so that I can pump oil into bearings, rather than rely on gravity?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thread: Which steam oil
15/02/2016 13:44:09

Thanks. I'm a member at East Somerset so will ask around, I was just interested to see what others use. I've seen Morris's website and may order from them. I knew coal is usually available from clubs but hadn't realised steam oil might be. Gavin

ive just bought my first loco, a Simplex, and have a couple of questions: compound steam oil - 460, 680 or 1000? I've been suggested 1000, but I think it should be 460? Next general lubrication, what is best? I assume not car engine oil? Finally water - our mains water is hard, so is rain water better ( we've plenty of that!) although this is my first loco, I've been building a Simplex for more years than I like to admit, but decided it was time to get a loco I can run.
