This is what I sketched from old switch

Kitty motor old switch wiring

26/04/2017 11:54:32

My first go at wiring this tripped the consumer unit. I am not sure why. Can anyone confirm my wiring diagrams are correct? I have live on 1 and 3 connected to neutral.

Thanks Martin

I have mounted up the new electric equiped kitty motor onto the lathe to check it all fits . I have left wnough cable to aloow me to site the switch anywhere . However probably think it will go on front .

Hi Brian yes something went wrong with upload here is my first disgram again:

new electrics layout for remote drummond switch

21/04/2017 10:31:28

Have made connection to connector in box on motor. Am still awating cable glands and have to build a capacitor mount.

new box mounted blocks wired up

This is my first try at rewiring the remote switch. I have wired the capacitor in series . Am awaiting my cable gland unions to try it with the cable and switch wired up hope it looks ok

hi i wanted to know does the cap fit around the motor coil or in series with it please like my dewhurst switch diagram shows?

I presume it should be in series?

Hi Brian sorry didnt see this I finally have Dupar Dewhurst switch for connecting this up it looks quite straight forward to wire and have put a new box on the kitty motor. My only question is which way does this type a mount up . I have seen many odd looking mounts on ebay, but there is no images on google showing where they fit on the lathe can anyone help is the round side top with the leaver up or is it with label horizontal and the arm in the horizontal plane to switch on? Thanks for looking M

I have a Dupar Dewhurst Type A switch after giving up with the three phase rubbish thats for sale .I am curious about it as it has bolt holes in the bottom and a curve on the top which looks the correct way up . how is this mounted there are some odd mounts on ebay but no images on google on where to fit it. Can anywone hlp please?

Thread: Oil coolant pumps - which type of pump

Wow this has become a really intereasting thread , with lots of interesting ideas. I am really impressed with some of the ideas  .I didnt realise that car motors cam in two types . I was really hoping for a 240v system but that said the speed control version with the car pup looks great. I thought no one had done this

Thanks Neil I need to get things smaller on my motor since installing gearbox so wanted a smaller cap .. If I have a rotary switch do I connect this capacitor at motor end or at rotary reverse controller please.

Well connected the old on off button back on and it span at around the right speed no lock up of bearings so far now have to decide which rotary reverse switch to buy a grainger or dewhurst

Mounted up with belts awaiting them to stretch as they were taken apart to clean . All bolted up to see how it all sits in the bottom frame . No electrics wired back on yet still working on circuit diagram.

Oh have got a bit further with the Gearbox and been able to bolt it all together for the first time and attach the pulleys and the motor on is new plate to see if it will all work together. It looks promising and much better this way around. I had to use a three pronged puller to get pulley back off as it would not come off and was a bit stubborn . Armed with a video from Toby am going to work out an electrical drawing to see how reversing can be simplified.

pined and connected top half to the lathe

Checked new position for motor and that it has some clearance to rise on swing seat

Toby what a brilliant link https://woodgears.ca/motors/reversing.html. I thought this was really interesting thank you for providing it I feel i might be able to draw a diagram now

Adi that is really interesting I need to get my head round these motor start capacitors as they are a lot smaller now as the components are more discreet. I presume there was only one type now I see there are many. I have located a new aluminum box and some other parts but have to get back to order them.

Have now had chance to look at switch while its switching whilst on

Live 240v to V , N and a on box

Neutral 240v to U and b on box

oddly W  on box is not switched and must be for just connecting capacitor to yellow of starter coil. Does this make sense?

Connector Wires

b Brown(temp)

U Brown(temp) + Red (M) + Light-blue (M)

V Black (M) + Dark-blue( Capacitor)

W Yellow (M) + Brown (Capacitor)

It would seem from this diagram I posted above that I am missing white to green phase which would give a three phase . So this is a two phase Kity motor I am guessing. Which is what I expected. I am not sure how the capacitor works inline with these two phase coils. I think it must be to do away with armature. it seems to be connected across the black and yellow coil so am guessing this is starter coil at the higher impedence of 5.3 ohms. I am unsure how voltage is applied to this as it is not clear from schematic.

I would be grateful of any help here as was born in a world with semi-conductors and never learned some of this.

Thanks for looking
