Thread: A New Use fior Digital Verniers??
08/12/2015 17:17:48

Has anybody taken apart one of the cheap digital verniers to convert it as a dro for a lathe or milling machine? I kind of strikes me that it would be quite a cool thing to do. I will be purchasing one at some point to see if it is possible but just wondering if somebody else has beaten me to it.

Thank you for your kind words, Neilface 1 It was a bit of a mess and needed quite a lot doing but it was incredibly rewarding. I hope to make a start on the lining tomorrow, something I have not done before so it might get emotional.

Ralph, I will take a photo or two tomorrow. I am told that LBSC himself used to own one something like it but don't know if that is true or not. I know he references his Milnes lathe a couple of times but I have never seen him say what model it was. I am also led to believe that it is the same as a Denham DF4.

All the best

Dave.

Thank you for your kind words, Mr SC! I was just looking through my old photos and found one of the Flying Scotsman as I acquired it, thought I would post it out of interest. I must find time to sort my workshop, trouble is every time I go to do it I get distracted by stuff that needs doing on some engine or other. I also dabble with lasers and old amusement machines so never seem to get time for the housework.

Thread: Bench Drills
08/12/2015 08:44:17

I originally had a small "Nutool" drill, it was absolute rubbish. Someone then gave me a Wickes branded machine that looked identical but ran so much better. I don't know if it was the luck of the draw or if the machine was internally different but it was quieter with much less play in the quill. Only problem was it had a really low power motor in it and was not a lot of use for drilling steel at anything over about 8mm diameter. I now have one of the very large Clarke machines that I picked up at a car boot for £40. It came with 2 chucks, key and a decent 3/4hp motor. I suspect that the quality on the smaller units varies greatly from one to another and suspect that quality control is not a priority when they are selling them so cheaply. I also suspect that they are made in numerous different factories, each having their own view on what is and is not acceptable.

Thread: Metal cutting jigsaw

One tool that I get on really well with is an angle grinder equipped with one of those 1mm thick cutting discs. It's great for cutting straight lines in a wide range of thicknesses, I have only used on steel though so don't know if they are any good for ally. I find it much easier to get a good straight line than when using a jigsaw.

You may also find it beneficial to put some standard engine oil in your lubricator so that you are feeding lube in to the cylinders. Steam oil is no good at ambient temperatures and no oil would not be a god idea. Do be aware that oil will come out in the exhaust, take precautions to avoid the wrath of whoever has to clean the flat.

I recently had to resort to using a jigsaw for cutting 3mm steel, I had some fairly steep radii to work round as well as some long straights. I purchased a pack of very high quality blades and the whole job went rather well. I did find that the blades blunted fairly quickly but can't see that being a problem in ally, although pinning (like with files) could possibly be an issue. As others have said make sure the pendulum action is turned off. Don't try and run the blade too fast and be careful if cutting tight radii. My curves were approx. 2 1/2 inch radius and I just about got round them ok.

Romulus.jpgA couple more piccies, one of my Romulus being rebuilt. Nearly finished with it now, just some reassembly required. The other is of my 2 1/2 inch gauge Flying Scotsman. The Romulus was a runner when I got it but was in poor shape and quite a lot of the work was not really up to standard. The quartering was a mile off, nuts had been inserted in the split bearings in an attempt to stop it locking up, the valve timing was miles out, it had tons of red oxide primer all over it and it had a really ugly cab. The Scotsman was much better but unfinished, it was quite a contrast working on the 2 models at about the same time. And, yes, my workshop really is that messy and disorganised.Scotsman.jpg

I may have been being a dunderhead with the photos, try this:

This was a Claton undertype that I was working on, I sold it a couple of months ago to finance some of my other projects.

Hi Ian, I did try that but didn't get anywhere. It will only let me insert an image from an album, then it says I don't have any albums and does not give me an option to create one. I hate software.

Howard, I am not a club member yet, I have been speaking to the guys over at North Scarle but won't join until next year, otherwise I have to pay 6 months subscription for 2 months membership.

I missed the Spalding show this year, sadly. I really wanted to go to it but something unavoidable came up. I have informed everybody that if I miss it again this year, there will be trouble Last show I went to was the Midlands one, I really enjoyed it but not the 5 hours of driving there and back. Spalding is about 1/2 hour away so a very attractive proposition.

I am just outside of Boston.

Hi George, I do enjoy a dabble in the workshop Been in to it for about the last 20 years or so but have ramped up my efforts significantly in the last couple of years.

Neil, I am going to try and add a couple of photos now, it may work and it may not!

Nope, can't work that out, looks like images have to be hosted or something - too much hassle to get an account and all that, sorry.

Dave.

PS thanks both for your replies.

I have a spare boiler for speedy - would that be of any use to you?

Hi all, just a quick intro from a forum newbie. Been in to model engineering for some years, started with simple oscillating steam engines, built a Minnie traction engine and then a Boxhill 5 inch loco that I did not get to finish. Just completed a Bassett Lowke designed 2 1/2 inch Flying Scotsman, although still need to do the lining. I buy and sell stuff to finance my hobby, am currently working on a 7 1/4 inch Romulus, a freelance 5 inch monster, an LBSC Molly, lost count of how many part built tiches I have. Also have a part built Speedy and a part built Molly and a Black 5. One day I may actually finish something Workshop has a wonderful old Henry Milnes screw cutting lathe, a fully equipped Peatol, Clarke bandsaw, various welders and all the usual hand tools. Maybe not such a short intro after all
