Thread: Rotary table

I know nothing about the RDG offering but can say I am pleased with my Vortex 10" HV. ( I assume the 6" version to be similar) I use it a lot and can pick it up on my own. I also have a 14" rotary that takes a lot of forward planning to use. No fun clearing the path through the workshop for the wheeled table it lives on to get to the mill.

I bought a new Greeves 197 20TA trials bike dec 1958,cost £172 It came without lights, these were an extra which I could not afford at £7 & ten shilings,I still have the original sales leaflet. For lights I bolted to my handle bars a 6v car type sealed beam headlight unit well taped up to keep the water out ,I was 17 at the time I was on £4 10shillings apprentice wages at the time plus 12 shillings for two hours work on Sundays selling /delivering sunday newspapers, that was good money .My wages were over twice what most apprentices earned in my class at technical colledge. Later on I bought a new trials 1964 Greeves 24TES mark 2 this cost £252 by this time I was running a Morris 1000 pick up to carry the bike to trials.

My first trials bike was a bit later than yours a Sprite with 197 Villiers. That to was transported with a Morris 1000 pick up. I sold the Sprite and bought a Bultaco, much easier to ride, after a few years I switched to a "Beamish Suzuki" with the Whitlock frame because riders with them where winning most local trials. I just could not get on with the bike and gave up trials.

Before using the number 10 drill use a slightly smaller Stub Drill. The shorter drill and stiffness will help.

If you have the space and budget a Bridgeport is nice. The downside is most are worn out beyond sensible reconditioning.

Thread: Oil proof brush?

Plus 1 for the "Acid" brushes. I buy the 30 or 40 at a time and they last well. For bigger brushing jobs lathe/mill cleaning I tend to demote used paint brushes from the household painting jobs when they have seen a bit of work.

A timely reminder to revamp my garage/workshop. I first laid it out to leave space for pulling my Land Rovers apart. Retirement and the realization that I could afford the old motorcycles or the Land Rovers but not both. The bikes won my affections, first love and all that.

Thread: Over wintering Motorcycle battery .
14/12/2020 18:19:41

Accumate for me. Three bikes so all get a one week stint on the charger. I do use my bikes in the winter but if the roads are really messy it means the Yamaha gets out to play, the pre-war stuff is to precious.

I made a backplate for somebody a few years ago. Memory tells me 75mm. I have been known to be wrong though.

Thread: New 3 Jaw Chuck
06/12/2020 21:02:28

My Pratt Burnerd 160mm chuck was well worn and new jaws are around £170. If I had replaced the jaws the scroll may have been past it's bet. I bought a Zither (Indian made ? ) chuck from ARC for around £115. It runs truer than any three jaw has a right to. The downside is a very poor notchy feel when winding the chuck key but a few years on all still runs well.

At age 15 the old guy next door gave me a 98cc Excelsior for cutting his grass every week.

Excelsior made lawnmowers ? surprise

Nigel B.

I should have been a bit wiser with the words. The bike was given to me as payment for the grass cutting.

It did however start a love affair with motorcycles that is still my passion.

At age 15 the old guy next door gave me a 98cc Excelsior for cutting his grass every week. Great fun over the fields and canal towpaths. Just before my 16th birthday I bought an ex WD G3 Matchless 350 for £8. Apprentice toolmaker wages didn't really run to running a bike so I still had to do odd jobs for people. 18 months trouble free and I sold the bike for £15 to fund my first Norton, a Dommie 88 for £40 (did I ever pay Mom back ?)

I am now 72 and have never been without a bike, I commuted by bike most of my working life doing over 200 miles a week. Now I cover around 1500 miles a year on old vintage hand change bikes but still have the faithful Yamaha that carried me to work for over 20 years.
