You could try a commercial rust proofer such as Rocol Z30. Not cheap though.

Lee Springs have a huge range, not cheap though. |

I'm interested to know how the 70% failure probability mentioned earlier was calculated. [ ... ] . Eric Estimated [not Calculated] was the word that Bill used ... From something [as yet uncorroborated] that I was told today; that estimate was a 'gut feel' based on one of the very early videos of the spillway event. ... These are probably worth a second look. MichaelG. But putting a number to a gut feel gives it an unwarranted weight. I wonder how much experience of similar circumstance the gut feel was based on. Unless it was vast I would argue that a numerical probability should not have been used. I stick by my gut feeling of the error bounds (noting the inconsistancy of that). |

Hullo everyone, Not familiar with the area, but if the dam is for making up the canal where locking down can mean a big loss of water, such that further operations are delayed until more water is available, which could have made the canal uneconomic at the time, then a possible modern way would be to back pump from lower down so recapturing the lock discharge. Dead easy....... but not quite! Big pumps, ducts, track excavations, a basin, and all that. An interesting problem. What to do with the old dam? Dead easy.......but not quite! Perhaps let it grow into an attractive ruin. Sailing club and an SSSI could be very expensive. You can see the lawyers circling already as there will be much to be had. The residents fear ....it won't go away. A few sleepless night for some people in charge. Best wishes to all and happy modeling. I believe Combs reservoir will feed the canal system. I'm interested to know how the 70% failure probability mentioned earlier was calculated. Probabalistic structural integrity assessment is possible, but it is difficult and requires a vast amount of data. I suspect the error bounds on that figure are approximately +29%/ -69%. Eric |

Shouldn’t be a problem discharging from the pumps into the canal as canals have their own discharge spillways strategically positioned along their length to discharge excess water and prevent said canal from flooding. Dave W The canal over spills into the Goyt at Whaley canal basin, perhaps 20 yards from where any water coming from the reservoir arrives. At its closest point the Goyt is much closer to the reservoir than the canal. The flow channel from the reservoir to the canal is not large: you would not get much flow down it. Pumping into the canal instead of the Goyt would not have been in any way a reasonable option. |

My copy is 2018 sp3 and works without an internet connection but comes up with a notice to say that news and community features will not be available. I bet it will stop working though! It does seem very unfair as, although Qcad will read and work on simple drawings some of my drawings are virtually unuseable in Qcad as it confuses layers and uses different font styles and sizes for dimensions. Perhaps it will be worth exporting all my drawings in various dxf versions before Draftsight goes tits up. On the other hand perhaps some kind hacker will come up with an unlocked version that will keep working. Russell Russell, what problems have you find with layers when reading Draftsight dwg files in Qcad? Eric |

Thread: Simplex 3.5 (Simplex Minor?) - help requested |

Simplex Minor was serialised in Model Engineer starting with issue 4024. Watch out for the dimensions there are errors. The one I remember in particular is a 0.5" difference between the cab and tank side length and the corresponding length on the frames. |
