On my south bend 9 a , i just make the change gear out of tufnol as and when required to cut metric threads with the least possible error. Last one i cut was for a 2mm thread. I bought a boxford 79 teeth and made i think a 20 or 24teeth one from tufnol. You can do a lot of metric threads with a 79 teeth gear + one of either 20,24.30 and 40 teeth .Though i have the gear box on my south bend. |

looks like they no longer make 3 square files of the type your looking for. Would the 100mm total length vallorbe with 2.8mm across flats not do ,only around 0.4 mm difference in cross section. |

There seems to be alot of different catalogues on google heres the link to the one i looked at. Its at the bottom of page 33 of this document (not the page counter at the top of the pdf reader) |

If you look at the vallorbe catalogue the 100mm total length ,3 square needle files are only 2.8mm across the flats .Such as LA2407 . They don`t seem to give the measurements for the escapement files. |

Mark, that length is the cutting length and does not include the tang see here Hi Jason, yes i kind of realised that after i posted ,some suppliers giving the overall length and some just the cutting edge length. Still never seen 2 1/2" ones and i hope the OP clears up if he means overall length or cutting edge. |
12/11/2017 15:47:35 |
Do you mean 2 1/2 " blade or overall length? The blades on many needle files are only 2 1/2" and about 5 1/2" or 6" overall. The valorbe escapement files as far as i know are smaller than normal needle files they are listed at 55mm long whereas the regular needle files are listed at 160mm long. Such as https://www.shesto.co.uk/brands/vallorbe/vallorbe-le3014-55-6-escapement-file-three-square-6-cut/ Though the sizing on various sites is highly confusing Edited By mark smith 20 on 12/11/2017 15:54:14 Edited By mark smith 20 on 12/11/2017 15:54:45 Edited By mark smith 20 on 12/11/2017 15:58:22 |

If you think some of those files are expensive , try Liogier hand cut rasps which i have a couple .(around 60-150 euros each). I have a couple of Auriou as well which also werent cheap, the course teeth ones are good on aluminium). I found them fantastic to use on wood which is what i use them for but the expense led me to make my own small ones ,hand cut with a punch from gauge plate. I also have several of the vallorbe /grobet in very fine teeth size for use on sterling silver . Also very good but small teeth gum up extremely quickly on soft metals. Corradi(italian machine made files and rasps), is another brand that seem to get good reviews from people i know. One of my attempts at rasps: Edited By mark smith 20 on 10/11/2017 10:41:21 |

Are you replacing the ml7 with a mini lathe?? I had a conquest super for around 10 years , it was ok and was capable of ok work within its limits. The super part when i bought mine was that it had those awful digital readout things on the cross and top slide. They lasted about 3 week in an upheated workshop. I guess they are just another variation of the common 7 x 14 mini lathe that arc, amadeal ,warco and chester sell amongst many others. |

Ive been using a fine one of these for years and think its great but on an 8" grinder. I think the grit was something like 100. Edited By mark smith 20 on 04/11/2017 10:50:14 |

Ive found these discs don`t need to be run all that fast .I doubt if i run them any more than 1000rpm never mind 3600rpm, and they work fine. Running at higher speed will just cause excess heat on the tool. |
