Are people not over estimating the power needed to sharpen tools for clockmaking with a 2" diamond lap???

I bought a few of these dc peristaltic motors with controllers for £20 off ebay (they cost a fortune from cole palmer, the latest models are almost £1500 for one motor and controller) ,they are only 75 watt and suitable for a lot of smaller stuff. Only problem is overcomming the spiral splined 8mm shaft .

heres one i`ve used for a flexible drive.

Thread: Boxford metric lead screw fitted to imperial lathe?
27/10/2019 16:56:28

I use a southbend 9A which is similar to the boxford . When i make metric threads using the imperial leadscrew ,i use a spreadsheet calculator that i was sent by someone in the US . Its quite good and calculates which gears you need on the gear train to use in conjunction with the gearbox. Gives all the pitch errors and enables me to cut metric threads without the need for the expensive 127/100 gear.

I would upload it but i think you can only post photos. heres a screen shot.

Thread: sink fitting help
20/09/2019 16:04:44

Neil,

It does look like something like that ,i`ll have to wait to my trap arrives to see if i can fit it on somehow..

20/09/2019 10:29:07

Thanks for all the help and suggestions i think i have an idea of what im doing now.

Ian yes it looks similar but without the side waste connector.

I have ordered the two 15mm x 1/2" connectors that jason suggested which will hopefully come by saturday afternoon.

RMA, there wasnt anything else with the sink/tap . I will proably just go to toolstation for any extra stuff i need as i want to get it done this weekend and would probably be next week if there was anything missing from the plumbworld order.

Thread: Dumb question from a none driver
20/09/2019 10:20:21

Andrew ,i think i mentioned earlier the situation. I would also like to point out that my son has a mild form of Aspergers Sydrome ,he is trying to be independent and stand on his own feet but he is awful at handling money or budgeting .

He was receiving some disability benefits but these were stopped because of his insistance on trying to attend DSS interviews without telling us first as he should have had either myself ,my wife or a responsible adult with him .

He is working full time and claiming no benefits at the moment ,which is quite remarkable for many adults with autistic spectrum .

We did manage his money but the adult social worker he used to have insisted he learnt to manage his own money and of course he ended up in a right mess.

A mechanic friend thinks the cars problem is the turbo unit and can hopefully fix it for him.

Not too pleased at the moment van drove fine for a couple of weeks then on way to work my son broke down and had to call AA, he said engine was semi seized .

Put 3 litres of oil in and towed it back to my sons home as he didnt have the money to take to a garage. Various so caled mechanics reckon the turbo has failed or half a dozen other things. He decided to drive it to a mechanic mate and car conked out again with smoke coming from exhaust . Couldnt call AA again and a friend is picking is towing the car back to his place tomorrow.

Im totally at a loss as i know nothing about cars and probably why i dont drive.crying

Thread: sink fitting help
19/09/2019 20:35:46

I have 15mm copper pipe and 40mm waste pipe and a load of various solder ring fittings but with have to buy the bits Jason suggests. Havent bought a bottle trap yet. Problem is i dont really want it too long other wise the waste pipe will be going uphill.

I suspect Sauber who made the sink and tap are German.

19/09/2019 19:59:46

Just a sort of flimsy plastic bush thing which im unsure what its for.

19/09/2019 19:50:52

Thanks , if i fit a small piece of pipe 40mm , how do i fix the female nut screw end of a standard trap onto the pipe??

Also wondered if the large plastic nut already on there already could be removed and a waste trap could then just screw on ? Or are the threaded nut on the top of a standard trap likely to be a different size?

Hi , Im putting a new sink in for my mother ,this one :

**LINK**

As you can see it came with the tap and tails for underneath.

My mind is getting confused as to what i need to connect it up.

Ive fitted waste traps before but this one seems backwards as usually on the ones ive fitted the trap underneath just screws onto the bit under the plug hole. It says in on the webpage 45mm waste connection.40mm waste pipe fits into the hole if thats any use.

What i want to know is what type of trap do i fit as it already has a plastic nut on it????

The other thing is the tails ive used before are usually a male threaded end that connects to a standard tap connector underneath which always usually have a female nut on. ?????

Help please.

Thanks for the further comments.

Bill - i checked tax , mot and insurance status just now and they all check out for the vehicle. my son i think said he used the bar code on part 10 from the V5c form which the seller should or shouldn`t have gave us to arrange the tax.

Mark

p.s the seller had the whole V5C from the previous owner before him

Edited By mark smith 20 on 05/09/2019 00:36:01

Bill raises an important point. the "tax" (road fund licence) no longer transfers with the car. It is cancelled when the car changes registered keeper. Unless your son has actually paid for new tax the vehicle will be untaxed. The online status may not update immediately especially as the previous keeper does not seem to have notified the DVLA of the sale. If they had it taxed then the website may be showing that.

Robert G8RPI.

H e paid online using the bar code from the V5c part 10 (the part about new keeper) ,when i checked yesterday it says taxed until 1 August 2020.

Just an update i yesterday received a receipt in my name as owner so with the facebook conversation and screen shots off the phone showing the seller in the conversation i feel i have enough proof of purchase.

The V5c change of keeper has been done online.

Initial insurance my son took out on the van was wrong due to mix up between comparison site and insurance company not having me as owner of vehicle down on policy and not being covered for commuting to and from work. When contacted they said my son would have to either become the owner or cancel policy .So cancel policy it was.

Cancelled insurance today (within 14 day cool off period) £72 refund given on initial deposit.

Took out new policy today which has me as owner stated on the policy and my son as the keeper, and covers for commuting to and from work.

So everything seem alright i think.smiley

thanks everyone for all the advice

Ok I think i have enough of an idea of what needs to be done and i`ll update once sorted out.

Thanks to all who replied.

Seller say he will provide a receipt in my name and ive asked him to simply sign part 8 of the V5C as ive already filled in part 6 in my sons name. Then i can return it to the DVLA and they should send him (my son) a new one .Is that right????

We`ll keep part 10 only.

Thanks Marc

I bought the car through facebook locally , i have all the conversation and it says sold ,is that any kind of proof??

31/08/2019 11:07:27

To confuse me further i just found a seperate part 10 of a V5C in the wallet we were given saying to be kept by the new registered keeper but it has not been filled in and is from a different V5C document???

Thanks for all the replies,OK i`ll go into a little more detail.

My son has got himself into quite a lot of debt, he works full time but has to commute around 20 miles each way to work.

His debt is being dealt with officially through the CAB and the conditions are that he cant have a car with an value over £1000 . The car cost me £700, its actually a Corsavan , but it was quite a good deal and the value is likely to over £1000 for used value.

His previous car wouldnt have passed the MOT so he was in a bit of a mess. Cant get to work/lose job.

I decided to buy the vehicle for him but as the owner. He is the keeper , hes already sorted insurance and tax out whilst i was present so no worries about that ,and his insurance turned out almost half of what he was previous paying for the car.

All i really need is something to prove that i bought the vehicle and not my son. Just in case someone from CAB wants proof that my son doesnt own it.

I get on well with my son so not worried about anything like disputes with him.

I have read some of the links given above and read somewhere that the seller should maybe have did some sort of transfer of ownership thing and destroyed the rest of the V5C and then the DVLA would send out a new one to either me or my son? Thoroughly confused.

So should i just ask the seller to sign a receipt or something. The V5C document has the sellers details on it.

Thanks Mark

.

Mark,

There is now another word in use ... almost guaranteed to cause further confusion:

"His debt is being dealt with officially through the CAB and the conditions are that he cant have a car with an value over £1000 ."

How does CAB interpret the word "have" ?

But, whatever the answer to that question: I think the first thing you need is a receipt from the seller, confirming that the van was sold to you for £700

MichaelG.

Michael ,i meant OWN not have. As in an asset that you can sell that you own.

Talk to CAB. Your situation will not be unique.

A receipt from the sellar isn't going to be much good, after all anyone can draw up a piece of paper stating that I, Joe Bloggs, T/A Dodgy Cars Ltd, have this day sold a van bearing registration plate ABC123 to Mark Smith 20.

The V5C is of no use in this respect - it is purely a DVLA document concerned with the Registered Keeper and contains no information on purchase or other prices.

Peter G. Shaw

My son is due a telephone interview on the 4th Sep with the relevant CAB department. So could be discussed then.
