Thread: tnmg inserts |
14/09/2017 13:50:25 |
Thanks all for the links ,i think i understand a bit more now after reading those. You have to understand i don`t own any carbide tipped lathe tools at all and this is for a different project. One further question ,i see lots mentioned as for roughing or finishing etc... Does that just have to do with the sharpness of the inserts /coatings.? Is it impossible to get a good finish with a insert stated as suitable for roughing? Are the roughing inserts tougher in some way. |

Can someone explain to me (not much experience of inserts and find all the terminology confusing), are all TNMG inserts negative type??? Also are the generally all the same dimensions apart from thickness across manufacturers? Thanks Edited By mark smith 20 on 14/09/2017 12:01:03 |

Forgot to say ive used this guy several times,Roy Walker . My Southbend on cabinet from London to Cumbria ,and my Alexander mill from just outside Sheffield to Cumbria. Also a bandsaw on stand from Yarmouth to Cumbria. Hes not afraid of hard work and with help from me we managed my end with unloading both and even getting around by back garden (in the case of the alexander it took 2 hours to get around the garden).. His price was always very good ,especially if he can fit it in with a journey hes already doing. Ive also had several pallets collected by palletline,etc... for around £40,but they need to be on a pallet with easy access for the driver. Edited By mark smith 20 on 14/09/2017 10:37:31 |

Ive looked at these quite often ,but nearly always get put off by some of their terms and conditions . There is also often a deposit which is often quite large before you are allowed to bid. On looking around reviews etc... ive heard the deposit is often slow to be returned . Ive seen some where they want a £1000 deposit and if your only looking at small items going for a couple of hundred pounds or even less, it starts to get a bit ridiculous for a private buyer. Dealers in used tooling and machinery probably have this all worked out. |
Thread: What sort of chuck is this ? |
13/09/2017 16:22:22 |
Bill , i bought the one in the first post, very happy with it,and yes appears to be threaded for 1" threaded cutters. It is just flat bottomed inside and there is a hole. This holder fine by me as it allows me to use larger cutters than what im limited to with the small clarkson `c` type i have and the er32.
One question though is that the draw bar thread doesnt appear to be M16 which i was expecting for MT4 . A M16 thread on a boring head i have only goes in about one thread then stops. Is it 5/8" BSW or other???? I need to make a pull stud on the lathe with thread for the holder on one side and alexander 20 x 2mm on the drawbar end. Tried the 20 x 2 thread cutting on my southbend which is imperial ,the pitch i got almost dead on but the saw tooth thread wasnt up to much , unsure about cutter shape.

Bill thanks very much ,i thought something didnt add up with the other styles of holder. So the front piece is both a nut and collet combined? |

I hear pro nuclear arguments all the time ,usually from people who work there ,but you have a different perspective when you live near one of the biggest moneypits in the Uk, Sellafield .Which is stuck on the edge of one of the most beautiful parts of the country. |

Thanks Michael, i looked on patents and was searching for dormer. There is still a slight difference though between the holder nut i originally posted and the ones illustrated . Seems collets are impossible to source |
10/09/2017 23:38:06 |
One thing im still confused about in my original photo the threads on the nut are at the front and it has threads on the inside at the back, different from your last photo????? |
10/09/2017 16:00:40 |
Thanks for that it looks more like what i posted , also looks very different to this. there must have been more than the one or two actual chucks i can find ,very strange that there is no info on google or all the other forums. Especially as to what an actual collet looks like. In your illustration it appears to have collets a little like the clarkson `c` type chuck i have but with a taper at the back. Hi, I was having problems with bed twist last week and used a similar or the same Rabone Chesterman level, the ones with the V on the bottom. It has improved the turning remarkably . A simple matter of slackening off one of the tailstock end foot mounting bolts. I think as long as the bubble is in the same place in 2-3 places on the bed ,its accurate enough for most . Mine doesnt have any accuracy markings either. mines identical to this: Edited By mark smith 20 on 10/09/2017 14:39:32 Edited By mark smith 20 on 10/09/2017 14:40:19 |

One question, what is the purpose of the 4 sloping holes..... Surely they are just the holes for the jaw fixing screws. Looks to me as if they have just been drilled right through, rather than being left blind? Murray No they are seperate, i should have said the two behind the fixed jaw slope down and merge with the mounting bolts holes( the mounting bolt hole go straight through to the back. ). The two small diameter holes around 3 - 4mm behind the sliding jaw ,don`t slope but go straight through but emerge either side of the jaw bolt holes. There are also two identical holes on either side of the fixed jaw as well going right though to the jaw. So six holes in total which aren`t threaded. (not including the 4 obvious jaw bolt holes)

Thanks Clive , ive no idea about what cutters fit it or their size , i was basically interested in anything which will fit in my MT4 Alexander spindle MT4 stuff is never cheap when you find it and most of the hobby machinist shops tend to stop at MT3. The seller of the chuck knows nothing ,just found it in a box of stuff apparently unused. |
09/09/2017 20:27:43 |
Well i can find any mention on google other than whats been refered to .So its a puzzle ,is it designed to hold one size or was it originally to come with extra screw on front pieces. I cant tell if the front piece is design to hold screw in collets or cutters? |
09/09/2017 19:33:21 |
So is it for holding collets for tapping?? The only other i can find a photo of one is this MT5 one ...

Got the vice together apart from jaws, stoned all the dings /burrs of all the slideways, had to make new jib strip . Also put the `t` back in British.
Very nice job! Thanks, finally got jaws on it and its a very nice solid vice. Bought some 12mm x 40mm ground stock and used it.Got one of the jaw mounting holes off by about 1/2mm but it was enough to cause a bit of swearing as i couldnt see in which direction ,also the original holes were also slightly out of level. One question, what is the purpose of the 4 sloping holes visible ,are they just to poke something in if the jaws ever get rusted onto the body,to allow you to knock them off????
