Thread: Cutting copper tube square |
14/11/2020 17:40:49 |
Hello again - although the tube was marked using the paper strip I found it very difficult to file square and in fact seemed to make it less square and shorter! I resorted to using my lathe and turned up two hardwood mandrills with 2deg taper. Left one in 4 jaw & other in tailstock centre where slight pressure gave a good grip to the tube. (See photo) Trimmed the tube at both edges with a freshly sharpened parting tool going right through into the wood. Thanks again for such a wealth of helpful ideas.

Thank you for all the great replies. The idea of wrapping a piece of paper & then marking with a sharpie was a revelation to me and works well. Tempted as I am to use the lathe I think that the suggestion to use this task a means of improving my filing skills is a good on so I'll try that. Thanks again Pete

I am making a spirit burner from a slice of 54mm copper tube and I am struggling to get the ends square. Any tips I should know. I have access to a Boxford lathe

Thread: Parts for Boxford Tailstock |
29/03/2019 17:51:17 |
Hi, thanks to helpful replies to my first post I have acquired an older Boxford Type C. This has two opposing Alan-headed studs, one on either side, to adjust Tailstock alignment. One of these is split acroos the AlanKey hole and can't be adjusted. I'd like to make or buy a new one. Does anyone know the thread? It is 0.25" diameter. Pete |
Thread: Older/cheaper lathes |
07/03/2019 18:00:28 |
Thanks again for all the helpful advice. I feel like I’ve learned a lot in the last 24 hours! I had begun to wonder if Myfords had somehow attracted a premium price and this seems to be confirmed. It also appears that larger "Industrial" lathes are cheaper than smaller "Model Engineer" ones? After thinking a bit more & as I haven’t a specific project in mind I’d prefer a lathe that requires attention rather than a “ready to use” model. Should keep the price down too. Does anyone know the overall size & weight of say the 6” Atlas as transport will be a factor (I’m near Preston, Lancs) - I think 6" centre height will be the maximum I can manage. Russ B I'm not too far from Doncaster if there's a bargain going. Pete |

Thanks to the several who've replied so promptly & helpfully. To answer Paul's question about size I wouldn't need to machine anything bigger than would fit a Myfo I'll check out the Atlas for size. Thanks again everyone Pete |

Hi 40 years ago I had a Myford Super Seven and foolishly sold. Although I don't have a specific project I miss the lathe and would like another. I can't afford as much as I spent years ago so have been looking at second hand lathes on ebay etc. I don't mind restoring an older machine but would appreciate guidance as there are so many lathes out there and if I am to bid I need to know which models are worthy & which to avoid. |
