HI, just logged on to Traction talk and it is up and running.

It took about two months for my sign up to be activated but it is worth the wait.

I would be wary of a Baxi boiler, I had one fitted four years ago and it has blown a resistor component on the control board twice. The first one replaced under warrantee and the second under boiler insurance. The boards cost £375 + vat. Speaking to the British Gas man who came to repair it he said British Gas refuse to instal Baxi boilers now as they have had too many faults due to blown control boards.

I have had a couple of daily update messages from the Harrison lathes group this week so at least some of the site is working.

What can we do realistically to prevent this sort of thing happening? I looked and find I've got hundreds of cookies, if I delete them all what sort of problems am I going to cause myself?

And me, I had a speeding ticket through the post but because of the speed recorded (107 mph) it was a summons to attend court in Scotland. I was living in Kent and I had to provide evidence that my vintage motorcycle was under restoration and where I was on the day but they accepted my motorcycle was incapable of the speed involved. It transpires that the offending motorcycle was a foreign registration (Swedish) the same registration as my very old bike.

I have a Dore Westbury mill that I bought a few years ago and I find it fine for my modelling needs. It is much more versatile and powerful than the baby Seig 1 series mill that I also have which I keep for its small capacity drilling and soft metal milling. I paid £400 for it, basic but very functional.

The Geardfx download didn't like my iMac so it is going on my laptop, the laptop is slow but I keep a windows machine just for this purpose.

I will give it some more thought but as cost is a factor I'm leaning towards the chinese gears.

I am starting to build an Allchin TE 1.5 scale. I do not have the necessary gear cutters or indeed the machines to cut the gears so was looking for an alternatives before I mark out and drill the horn plates.

It would seem to me that chinese 1.5 module gears are almost the same diameter as the plans for the same number of teeth albeit a bit thicker but I could reduce their width.

What I was thinking was to buy a set or at least some of the require tooth counts and actually measure them when meshed on shafts and adjust the bearing spacing accordingly on the horn plates.

My two questions are,

Is this practical

and are there any other problems I have not foreseen with this idea such as clearance or interference with the parts?

When I moved house I employed a guy that moved grand pianos, he came with two piano trollies, jacked up my lathe, 400kgs Boxford, slid his trollies under it and rolled it out of my workshop, over the step and along the drive. At the other end the exact opposite. He did have trollies with pneumatic tyres but made the job look easy, no stress or strained backs. Cost me £100, he did say that lathes were easy compared to getting pianos up narrow staircase!

I have just bought a Dore Westbury Mk11.

It came with all the plans and books and I have just looked it up. The book says it is a M 46 V belt,

Googling that produces 10 x 6 x 46" Z or 1168mm. They seem quite cheap on eBay so I will get on and order one and report back as mine looks and sounds knackered. I don't have a belt supplier that I know of to go to 'borrow' any from.
